Honestly, it's not that complicated. The wood is hard and not receptive to stain. Manufactures just shoot beech with tinted catalyzed finish. You can build color on beech with stain, but can't finish with rubbed oil as it will float the stain. Must stain and shoot finish. Or shoot stained finish.

Beech is tough, but you can get some color and contrast with some effort. I haven't done a HW stock, but have refreshed a beat to death Feinwerkbau 300S rifle. I have pics somewhere....

I've been using the Vortek stuff on springs and internals and Slip2000 EWG on all contact points, pivots, etc. All good stuff. Anyone have any idea what the origin of the Vortek grease is?
