Remove the tiny plastic, super glue a .177 BB in it's place and you'll probably penetrate the barrel.

Clean the barrel? In my limited experience, slugs dirty up a barrel and are much more picky vs pellets. For slugs I probably have to clean after 100ish shots, or my groups will get unbelievably crazy, one foot spread at 50 yards.
