My 77 only likes 5.52 JSB heavies and 5.54 FTTs. Anything else and it will double the group size. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes.

It just comes down to the innate intricacies of that barrel and that projectile. There are a lot of not so easily quantifiable mechanical interactions going on that determine the accuracy. There really isn’t a hard and fast rule to give you an satisfying answer.

I would love to compete in something resembling Hunter Field Target in Finland. But I have been completely unable to find any such air gun competitions that aren’t just 10m.

I mainly kill paper at 20m in my yard. It’s the only marksmanship I get to practice in Finland. I have some steel targets that I like to stretch out to 50 meters when the weather is nice or we’re at summer cottage. Occasionally I will go sniping beer caps too.

Finally an update. Everything is reassembled and broken in. It shoots like a champ again. My guess is the piston seal had worn down enough to start affecting the velocity over a string of shots. Here is today’s standing 5er and a bonus beer cap.

Accuracy is generally correlated with decreasing velocity. Higher velocities exaggerate the effects of imperfections in the barrel and projectile. The one case where increasing velocity may improve accuracy is if the project is not quite stable coming out of the barrel. Increasing velocity will...

If the internals are anything like the valve in a Crosman, then eventually, you will kill the valve. Probably not in 1 shot, or even a dozen, but each one does a little damage until it’s fatal.
