As shootermeb said, you want a jacket that adds stability for offhand (and kneeling) shots. Having padding in the shoulder area to dampen heartbeat is also a bonus. The cheaper coats don't offer the offhand stability that you are looking for. Only the higher dollar, stiffer and thicker jackets...

A GP is not the best place for someone to start, but it is not uncommon for shooters to attend their first match at a GP! I have seen it many times. You are welcome to attend and will experience FT at a very high level; but your scores will definitely be lower, but don't get discouraged!
