Yeah he is just a meat deer and I been wanting to shoot one with my air rifle but I didn't want to test out on a bigger deer. Though after this, I have no doubts that with a head/neck shot this rifle is more than capable.
First deer with the air rifle! 30 yard headshot never flinched a muscle. 80 grain slug put the hurting on him! Just a little buck behind my house that I'm processing myself. Shot with my .30 maverick at over 150 FPE.
You are You are right. However, the speeds I can reach to achieve max FPE (over 120) require large slugs that are exceptionally long like boat tails. So the speeds that I can reach are not fast enough to stabilize them properly even though I'm achieving a high energy number for a .25 PCP. Only...
Well I actually hadn't really shot either of my pcp's in that time. Been working on couple other projects with one of my other hobbies. I do have a 1:14 twist barrel and a 1:18 twist to try out. The 1:22 shoots really well but doesn't handle over 100 FPE very well. Hopefully when it cools back...
It's been a couple months since I even shot it but I think I was getting around 20 full power shots at this level. Basically the only thing that is still "Avenger" is the action block assembly but I have modded that too.
Hopefully with faster twist rate barrels it will consistently tighten up groups. Though today with the swirling wind was probably making it a bit tough. Does seem these slugs buck the wind better upon initial testing.
Best 2 groups I could shoot today with the conditions. This is at 51 yards with the new to me Altaros 49.5 grain slugs. Current barrel is 1:22 twist which calculates to just under stabilizing this slug. Wind was pretty steady 15mph or so.
It has done it but consistently is tough right now at this power level. The slugs are running a bit too fast for the twist rate per the calculations. Got some faster twist barrels being made. I can see what I can do though with current one.
I'm kind of just going off my recent experiences. The larger and longer slugs arent grouping quite as well. 46 grain slugs for example I can shoot about 1030. The gun will key hole boat tail slugs so I know they aren't getting stabilized. My guess is 1:18 or 1:16 would be ideal but don't think I...
