I use Hoppem for first cleaning to get the gunk out, but you really don't know if it's clean or not unless you have access to a borescope, your just cleaning blindly... shiny doesn't mean clean

get a set of Mitutoyo IP67 grade with auto shutoff and they will last for years, shutoff time is 20 seconds, you can fid a good set on ebay, just watch for fakes
