10 days with my new Crown

Had an opportunity to shoot for accuracy today. Still cold, but enough snow melt to get to target stand and put up a target at 30 yards. Tested 13.43gr redesign JSBs at 23 on Power Wheel. From previous testing/tuning the ES was 2fps with power wheel at 23 and a velocity average of 897fps. This test was disappointing. Moved Power Wheel down until I got a decent group. Best group ended up at a Power Wheel setting of 20 with a velocity of 860fps. The spread was 16fps. Best guess is this pellet, in my Crown, likes a slower velocity than I had initially thought.

For the heck of it I shot a few groups of 16.2gr JSBs. Had the Power Wheel at 23 with a velocity of 830fps. Best group of the day. I’m thinking about raising the regulator 5 to 10 BAR and tuning for 880fps with 16.2 JSBs. Depending on how this works out I may set my Crown up for 16.2gr pellets. More snow predicted. So it may be awhile before I have more data.

Tested .177, 16.2 JSB pellets today. I asked a question on the projectile forum about .177, 16.2gr JSBs. It seems people are having the best luck with this pellet at the mid 900fps velocity and a recommended 140 to 150 BAR regulator setting. Started todays testing at 150 BAR. Below are the data with hammer spring adjuster about 1/2 turn below being in a bind.

Regulator Pressure 150 BAR
Hammer Wheel 23
Valve Wheel High
Altitude 7027 ft
Temp 47*
Barometer 22.64 inHg
Pellet JSB 16.2gr
Shot count: 10
Low: 898
Hi: 909
Avg: 904
Spread: 11
STD Dev: 3.3

Tried various regulator settings without changing hammer spring adjustment. My Crown with 500mm barrel is stock from the factory. I settled on the following (with hammer spring adjuster still about 1/2 turn below being in a bind).

Regulator Pressure 140 BAR
Hammer Wheel 23
Valve Wheel High
Altitude 7027 ft
Temp 47*
Barometer 22.64 inHg
Pellet JSB 16.2gr
Shot count: 10
Low: 900
Hi: 907
Avg: 903
Spread: 7
STD Dev: 2.8

Looks like I have maxed out my Crown with 500mm barrel at 140BAR for JSB 16.2gr pellets. If I want a faster velocity, I will need a longer barrel, heavier hammer, and/or a larger TP. Really don’t want a longer barrel. So I may look into heavier hammer and/or a larger TP if I end up pursuing more velocity.

I couldn’t get accuracy testing done today. If weather holds I will check accuracy tomorrow.

I was reading the thread here as I'm torn between a Dreamline with Saber Tactical stock or the Crown VP in synthetic. Looking for .22 caliber. Which do you think is more accurate? I will be using it primarily on the bench for 30 - 100 yards. Thoughts?

Because my DL is .25 cal and my Crown is .177 cal it wouldn't be fair to to either rifle for me to compare my performance impressions but both have proven to be accurate. My reason for the Crown is more an ergonomic issue.

I had my Dreamline Classic in an Aaron CZ FT chassis for awhile and though an excellent combination, I found it to be on the heavy side for me. Also the length with the 600mm barrel and moderator was a bit long for me. The stock DL classic stock doesn't compare with the Crown Minnelli stock.

The Crown with the K&L butt plate, 500mm barrel and Minnelli stock fit me like a glove.

I believe the Crown has a larger plenum than the DL therefore has more potential power for a given pellet and barrel length.

Bottom line I like both but the Crown gets my vote on how it feels in my hands. Wish I could be of more help.

I have a crown in 177 and 22 cal. plan on shooting 100 yards benchrest, should i go to a 25 or 30 cal barrel for this shoot? I'm new to this shooting game this will take place later this summer in Ohio. Thanks

I had hoped somebody more knowledgeable would have answered your question but it looks like that isn't happening. All I can advise is you ask your question on the Projectile forum. I think the RMAC 100 BR yard winner last year shot a .22 Crown but I'm not sure on the caliber. It may have been .25 or .30. I have read that the JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned .22 | 25.39 gr is generally a good pellet but the pellet to pellet consistency is suspect. Because of this a lot of competitors have or are changing to .25. Again I recommend you ask your question on the Projectile forum for a more knowledgable answer than mine.

Hi Guys, I appreciate your replies... I think I need to find a dealer with a crown so that I can shoulder it and see how it fits.
You really can't go wrong with the Crown. The Crown Continuum fits me perfectly and is a laser beam for accuracy. I currently have it rigged for .25 cal, but have barrels for .177 and .22 as well, so if I ever fancy tinkering I will. Also have the Huma Hammer weight tuning set, spring, Gen 3 regulator and the V2 dual transfer port and high flow pen probe should the urge arise to up tune it to a hard-hitting coyote hunting slug specific rifle. I have the backyard pretty much covered with my .22 P-Rod, nigh-time rat patrol with my PARD DS35 sitting on top of my .177 Benjamin Akela, and my all-around laser beam .22 Daystate Air Wolf.

I have a question about the Huma hammer weight/spring kit. Ernest Rowe has a 4 year old video on the need to modify a Crown's hammer spring base to allow the use of additional hammer weights and Bullet Central has just come out with a kit for the Crown that has a modified Crown hammer spring base and tungsten hammer. Did you have to modify your Crown's hammer spring base to use the Huma kit?

Finally had a chance to sit at the bench and shoot some groups. One interesting thing happened. I had removed the barrel (soda straw) from barrel assembly, cleaned it and reassembled. First shot was ~4" to the left and ~1 3/4" low of aim point. Reset scope and shot 10 - 5 shot groups. Looks like next time I remove the barrel to clean the barrel I will need to mark the barrel and make sure I clock it in the position I took it out. Also opens up clocking barrel at different positions in search of better accuracy. I was shooting JSB 16.2gr pellets at 880fps for these groups. As I have written before I'm really going for mid 900FPS but best I can do with stock configuration is about 905fps. Investigating more hammer weight and/or heavier hammer spring. I measured groups from outer edge to distant outer edge of holes. Measurement would be better if I used center to center measurements but it is easier to do it the way I did it. You can see my first shot before scope adjustment in the lower left of the picture. Groups shot at 30 yards.

Since you are shooting pellet and possibly lighter slugs I would highly recommend NOT to change hammer weight. If you want to shoot heavy slugs then you can get FX slug power kit for Crown but I would highly recommend getting a 700mm barrel, also keep the reg at 160 or higher. Stock hammer can reliably open 150 bars and heavy hammer is designed for 160 and higher.

qball,
Initially my intent was to tune my Crown for 13gr pellets and it performs very well with JSB 13.43 pellets. I just got fascinated by the JSB 16.2gr pellet. My problem is my new Crown is my favorite .177 rifle because of its handling and overall ergonomics. My Crown fits me better than any of my other PCPs and is a joy to shoot. I tend to grin when I pick it up! So I'm trying to find its limitations.
