10 meter rifle set up

Jumping in with both feet

researching a 10 meter rifle for my 12 year old son. He is in a NRA sponsored club shooting the three position. Right now he is using an Anschutz 8001 that is provided. I have looked in al the typical sites for what is offed and the pricing. Thinking 2 k is about the limit right now.

Just need your feed back in your rifle experience. Or maybe you have one for sale ?

I know of 2 rifles for sale by a fellow club member. Both are single stroke pneumatic. One is a Steyr and the other a Walther.

Both are near $1200.00

Shooting 3 position you need to stick to a pcp for ease of cocking in prone. Going with a cheap gun will be a frustrating downgrade from the 8001. I advocate putting a youth in the best equipment you can budget so they can progress rapidly and you don't have to upgrade as many times. Look for used 10M guns from Anschutz, FWB, Steyr, Walther on the classifieds and Target Talk. The quality on those four brands are pretty comparable, it all comes down to personal fit and feel preferences. Buying a quality jacket that fits properly is money well spent too and will be reflected in the scores.

For $2000 or under I would recommend the FWB 800 and Walther LG400 series with the cheaper stocks.

You are already spoiled with the Anshutz 8001 so this will be jumping in with both feet.

If you are a trigger snob then get the FWB.

No longer certain of the NRA 3p or 10m rules, used to be a price figured in the rules?

The crosman challenger is highly competitive in such shooting these days. 

Pilkington's are excellent to deal with and I'm sure you looked all through the CMP page/info.

Thanks for the advise everyone.

I did buy my son a shooting jacket two weeks ago. Watched his score jump up by a few points per target. Crazy how that makes a difference.

The 8001 is a great gun. Just seem to get and have confidence in your own equipment.

Not to bad for the 4th week IMHO
