Match 7 post:

Open to 177 and 22 rifles. 22 Target is a bit smaller to account for bigger pellet diameter.

Shoot as many cards as you like, post 2 best cards for the period.

Rules:

1. 10 meters away or 33 feet.

2. 177 or 22 caliber only. Any choice of optics.

3. Standing position hands held only.

4. Scoring is 10 points max per target.

5. If you break the line, you get score for highest line broken. Black center is 10 points, -1 point for each line from the center.

6. 40 Shot match. Shoot two printed cards.

7. Post pictures of two targets by end of day Mar 3 to participate in this round.

8. No shooting jacket, no shooting glove.

I managed my best card so far last night (137) but also had to face facts: at 10 meters using a Daisy peep sight on my Avanti 853 all I can see of each target is a light grey blur... and that's with my glasses on and a strong white light on the target. Is this challenge essentially about the shooter's ability to hold the gun steady, develop a good sight picture, and exercise good trigger control? Or is the acuity of the shooter's eyesight also factored into the challenge?

I ask because I'm thinking of using a green or orange highlighter to circle each target at the outer edge of the 4 ring just to give my 55+ eyes a chance to actually discern each target. Would that be cheating? I know that any type of gunsight is permitted (open notch, peep, dot/reflex, scope) and wonder if "improving" the discernibility of the targets themselves is beyond the pale...

I’m no expert, but everything I’ve read indicated that you should use a lens that has your distance prescription but also a diopter that helps keep your eye focused on the front sight, not the bull. The bull is supposed to be a blur, or at least not sharply focused.

@pewpewfever, all true... and I am following those prescriptions (see what I did there?). I use the distance correction of my prescription glasses, ignore the actual "peep" portion of my sights, focus on the front sight circle, and rely on my mind to center the target as it is wont to do. HOWEVER, all that depends on the target giving my eyes enough of a distinct image to allow my brain to process it. As it stands, with the targets so poorly resolved in my slowly-failing eyesight, I find that I must focus on the target/blur up until the last moment and then switch to the front sight and hope that I stay on target while pulling the trigger. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do within the rules (or spirit) of this competition to increase the distinctive outline of each target such that my mind can process its position within the front sight even as I focus on sight itself?

This challenge is too much fun to wimp out so I got back to shooting the standard .177 targets. My score for the following two cards is 279, including a personal best 142. First card shot using Crosman Premier Match Wadcutters at 7.4 gr, the second card shot using Crosman Premier Heavy Wadcutters at 7.9 gr. I'd never seen the 7.9 gr flattops from Crosman before but they shoot pretty well out of the 853.

Wow these are way harder for me to see and shoot than the standard black bull. I will be seeing the eye dr this week and looking at range light on my target trap too.
Also I am sure glad I ordered some h&n's this week, if I'm going to shoot this bad I cant shoot the r10's

Wow yesterday I clearly was upset by my vision and score. Thank you shutik for pointing out I scored this on the wrong total. A review of the cards brings me to a 152/200 and a 138/200 for a 290/400. While still long from my general 80 or so percent I will sure take it. I also edited my original pic so it posted properly orientated. I hope to do better shooting and scoring next month

Yeah Vasyl, way to go. I didn't have time to shoot any cards this time around. Spent today making my range card for tomorrow. Got it done up to 25 yards. Will need to do 30, 35, 40 and 45 duing the sight in time tomorrow morning. Weather looks good. High 30's and very little wind.

What helped me improve over 180 hump per card was locking my rear leg and making it straight.

I don't think you counted your score correctly.

Each card has max of 200, total max is 400. Your score should be a lot higher then you posted just from initial glimpse.

Went down some this week but if you average all my scores I'm just a little low of my average 169 + 167 =336.  I peaked about 2 years ago on my off hand shooting and have been going downhill ever since. It su*%s getting old
