Also, I think part of the loss of velocity is because the backward pellet does not seal in the barrel as a pellet should.
That is certainly not what I would have expected!This is not air rifle but it is pellets being shot backwards on high speed camera.
Love my black powder guns. Almost as much as my pellet guns.I never tried round balls from a air rifle. I did shoot it from a muzzle loader with 1:28 twist and it is surprisingly accurate at 100 meter.
Not only that, but with harder pellets, the skirt could deform outwards and start grinding its way into the rifling within the bore, which could at least theoretically cause the barrel to explode, due to the really high pressures - it would cause something similar to a squib in firearms.I think it would be really hard on the breach seal to do this.
