13xx 177vs22 penetration testing

Wasn't sure if this goes under pistols, rifles, pellets or what so I'm putting it here.

I'm someone who wanted to believe that a heavy 177 fired from a stock 1377 might have the same or better penetration as the slower moving 22 pellet from a 1322 or 2289.

However, in some recent testing using un-opened baked beans cans turned horizontally shot with the same style pellets of various kinds at 5yrds, 10yrds and maybe about 17yrds, the 22 wins every time. If you give the 177 more velocity from a better gun, it is plenty of penetration. But I was trying to see if 177 at a lower FPE than 22 from the SAME power plant could have any penetration advantage.

My testing showed that of the pellets I had available, the 14.3 crosman pointed, domes and gammo rocket (14.5gr I think) penetrated better than 10.5gr 177 OR 13.7gr 22 OR 17gr 22 pellets.

My goal was to see if I had a 13xx gun in the boat or the truck, which caliber would allow for a point blank head shot on an animal larger than should be normally taken with this gun. I may just need to kill a snake, but I want to have the most penetration available in case in an emergency I had to mercy kill an injured animal or something. That of course will probably never happen, but since I am partial to 177, I just had to know the truth.

I think a 177 with the SAME FPE as the 22 would probably penetrate as well or better just like how the Brits prefer 177 @ sub-12PFE when compared to 22 at the same FPE. But when comparing 6-8FPE in 177 against 8-11FPE in 22....the 177 smaller head size and higher velocity doesn't matter as much at that power level. I definitely had hoped for the opposite result, but my carry-all pumper is definitely going to be a 1322 or 2289 (I own both). I tried 10 pumps and also up to 18 pumps and the results were always the same. It took 17 pumps (at 10yrds) for the 177 to penetrate the thick bottom of the can of beans and the 22 could do it with 10 with most pellets (I did have a few inconsistent results at times).

I shot the can with a 900+FPS 177 and it was of course a whole different ballgame, but a 900FPS 22 would still probably penetrate better. There seems to be a sweet spot where 177 can out-do 22, but it just isn't possible with stock power 1377 from what I've seen...I'm not sure what ballistic gel would have looked like, but I wanted the hard metal to simulate skull for my hypothetical situation that will probably never happen LOL.

I have 2 1322s both of which have entirely way too much work done to them. Both I typically shoot around 550fps (though I can go up to 650 with one and 830fps with the other)... A crosman 14.3 pellet is unusually hard compared to most other pellets. They deform very little, and I get pass thrus on grey squirrel headshots @500fps. At such a low speed in wouldn't expect it, but time and time again...

Thanks for the reply...I guess that is true for ANY of the crosman 14.3 pellets?

Also, do either of your 1322's use the stock 10" barrel and if not, what length are you using?

I would love to have a 600FPS+ 1322 with either 10 or 12" barrel...I can get 600FPS on my stock 2289g with 18-20 pumps. But for this "truck/boat gun", I'm looking to make that power on 15 or less pumps from a 1322. I have already have a mellon piston setup waiting to be installed...what else will complement that for the best power @ 10 pumps or a little more? I have no interest in pumping more than 15.

Thanks!

It seems bejamin pellets are very hard as well. I've only used .25 benjamin domes, and the 14.3 Crosman CPHP, and .177 wadcutters. The wadcutters seemed to be just as hard, so maybe test some crosman .177 domed pellets? But I have to say, a softer pellet often penetrates wood better because it will squish into a thin wedge shape easily splitting the wood. I have a .22 that will shoot 21gr slugs at 1111fps, and it shot thru 6 pieces of 3/4" pine boards. Pine is pretty soft, but still a lot to go thru.

As far as I'm aware you'd be basically looking at a custom valve design to accomplish those fps numbers at that low of a pump count.

Both barrels I use are Lothar Walther. They come with very tight chokes which really knocks velocity down. 14.5" on one, and the other has been cut and has a looser choke on it now @7.6" length, it is on a pcp 1322, and it will do something like 28-29fpe on that gun (22 caliber, still) I have it detuned for noise and shot count to roughly 15fpe, though. It's plenty potent at that power level.

What stock it that? I have spent way to much on my 1322 and thought I have seen all stock options.
