I don't have either but I have built guns similar to both out of available after market parts.

The 2300s specs say velocity to 420fps.

The 1701 specs say velocity to 450fps in one place and 550fps in another. Still it is a pcp gun so it can easily be radically improved.

Being a PCP gun the 1701 requires a pump and filter which are fairly inexpensive <$150 for both on eBay or aliexpress. Although a cheap compressor, at a bit over $300 like the Yong Heng is what I would recommend.

Velocities on either gun can easily be improved with a longer barrel, hammer spring adjuster, hammer spring or transfer port change. Or any combination or these.

The trigger assemblies in the 2300 guns are like the 2240 units so not as nice as the 1701 which with a bit of polishing is an excellent trigger.

Add an adjustable Super Sear for the 2300 to get a far better trigger. Close to or equal to that of the 1701.

A Hammer Adjuster, that actually fits the tube ID, often a novel concept, would werq for either gun.

And last but not least 22xx power mods and aftermarket parts. Take it easy on the power mods as you have a pistol with a shorter barrel so don't need allot.

I had a 1701.

Traded it.

I have a 1720T.

I like it much better.

From the factory it comes with two TP to control shot count/speed. Mine shoots 25 shots at 12fpe.

I also have a 2300 that is highly modified without power mods.

I did not like the air gauge on the 1701 just hanging out there in space with zero protection.

If Crosman is your choice I say go with the 1720T.

I have a 1701P. It's really designed a lot more like a 10 meter gun. It's adjustable, but comes from the factory set at about 6 fpe. Haven't shot much in the past year, but if i remember correctly, has the same adjustments as a Marauder.

You need to purchase separate rear sights, doesn't come with any. It's heavy for a 10 meter gun, weighing about a pound more than the lighter guns.

Lothar Walther barrel, very accurate for short range. 50 plus shots on a fill, only comes in .177

Good trigger. I like the gun, but lost my indoor range to my wife's project so haven't shot much. Single shot, no option for a magazine. Might get it back out this fall when weather is sour and setup a 10 meter range in the garage.

have both, the 1701 gives a lot of shots to the fill and is super accurate and quiet, the trigger is good.It is more of a target pistol ,I love mine.

Not a huge difference, butt to me a big difference.

As was stated the 1720T is also a great pistol and then there is the Prod, which is a .22 multi shoot pistol.

I think the 1701 and the 1720T need no work to be great, the Pod some ..all those are PCP.

I like my 1701 a lot more than the 2300,fact is I am going to try to convert it to PCP....

Baker has this bulk valve that werqs well for the conversion to PCP. You just need to drill a couple of holes through the tube and into the valve even with the bottom hole that secures the valve. Then and enlarge the bottom one and tap the holes in the valve 8x32 and use grade #8 screws. Good to a bit over 2,000 psi. Use 10x32 grade 8 screws if you want to use more pressure.

This is a little less than what you are doing but will show most of the procedure.
