. 177 Cal, ideal thinking VS. Reality.

Well,

Pellets per tin, price, lot of options are Indeed and avantage in. 177 Cal.

I own a Bantam in . 177 Cal. And it is accurate at 50 yards, even 70 yards, but I have seen that you need to have no wind at all to expect accuracy at longer distances.

Another topic is the lack of hunting stopping power. When shooting birds. 22 seem to have more authority to finish faster with the suffer.

I think about to buying another. 177 in a bullpup format and, then, I realize I will face the same inconvenients.

. 177 owners, I will appreciate your feed back.

well to me it IS about price and availability .. can it stop a buffalo at 100 yards .. no .. but i can shoot the 177s anytime i want and not have to worry about supply and they 'will' do the pesting role under 30 or so no problem .. you need to stop something larger than a sparrow at 50 though its time to grab a bigger gun period .. only takes one pellet lol ... burning a tin up just farting around though, a 5$ box of walmart 177 premeirs is the best option ...

Try a heavier pellet. Love the way the jsb exact monsters 13.4 @ 800 handle the wind. If your gun will shoot them you Will be surprised.

+1to that. Shooting them out of .177 Skyhawk at 815 and dropped a couple Nutria rats at 40-60 yards and multiple rats and mice at 70,definitely try them if you haven’t already.

PS: I’m only talking the regulars;NOT the Redesigns

The JSB 16.2 Beast is my absolute favorite .177 pellet. However you need the power in the gun to get those up to speed, and some gun/barrel combinations allow higher speeds without creating pellet instability in flight.

For example my Pulsar HP is a laser beam (at least out to the 61 yards I have shot it) with the 16.2's flying on HIGH power to a muzzle velocity of just over 900 fps. Those pellets get to the target like NOW, and impact with a good thwack.

My Crown .177 (500 mm barrel) is tuned such that it can shoot the 16.2's at 875 fps at the muzzle. But it is more accurate backing off the HS to send them at 850 fps.

Finally, the last of our .177 air rifles is my wife's Wolverine R (standard power). Kind of hard to say that a Wolverine is weak, but it only shoots the 16.2's at about 710 fps. But that is O.K. as she mostly shoots 35 yards and closer, and the 13.43's @ 785 fps work well for her.

So no real easy answer to your question. In my experience with my personal guns, having a .177 which can achieve 30 FPE at the muzzle could likely meet your needs. But you have to find the right gun which can shoot the heavy pellets fast but without de-stabilizing them.

Emu,

I was getting similar performance out of my .177 Brocock Bantam with pellets up to 13g. Putting a DonnyFL Tanto(.177/.22) tightened up groups a bit at 50 and 75 yards(maybe improved barrel harmonics?), but still had more wind drift than most of the .22 pellets shot out of my .22 guns.

I've tried some NSA slugs, but the Bantam didn't seem to like them. I saw some significant performance increases(tighter groups/much less wind drift vs. pellets) using some of the .177 Griffin slugs. Might want to give them a try.

I have a Nova Star that's been given a lot of love. It shoots monsters at around 900 fps, and is VERY accurate out to at least 75 yards. I shoot slugs with it as well, but the JSB monsters perform almost identical (VERY fast flight time) and both hit very hard downrange. I was pretty surprised. Coming from a 65fpe fx Crown in .22. It still doesnt compare quality wise, but the performance of the .177 in that Nova Star is far above what I would have expected or thought. (Even with it significantly detuned to 900 fps)

Personally I don’t shoot anything over 10.5 grains out of my .177’s. If I want to send around 14+ grains, that’s what .22’s are for. Bridging the gap between calibers by pushing the upper spectrum of grains just doesn’t make much sense to me. I like having a golf bag full of calibers for different purposes. My .177’s are for situations where safety and or stealth is paramount.

"44 foot pounds in a .177 cal?"

Hence the "HYPOTHETICALLY" .

However its not that far out (or off), folk have reprogramed red wolfs to do 40ftlbf.

The point I was trying to make was, with the introduction of .177 slugs with their better BC and ability to go faster without losing stability , a .177 could (hypo again) push the boundaries of Reality.

ideal thinking!.

good luck.
