N/A .177 for slugs (primarily at least)?!

So whenever I pick the cal for a new rifle, I don’t even consider .177. I mean, there is whole countries out there being sad about the fact that that’s what they’re stuck with… I’ve got plenty of space to plink so why cripple myself (or so I thought… :)).

Yet, I find myself thinking about a .177 more and more due to “some” people’s influence (not looking at anyone in particular @JaceSpace1369 @RabbitofCaerbannog)… I am almost caving in so maybe talk me out of it? If you want to talk me (even deeper) into it that’s fine as well, ideally with a recommendation for a rifle in this case :) Since it’ll be an experiment of sorts for me I’d probably want to get a used medium tier one first to see how I like it, should shoot slugs though since I’d like to use it for small critters (besides plinking)… Thanks in advance!

I like the .177 as an “indoors” caliber. Am not discounting the feats achieved with sub 12 FPE PCPs in the UK…🙏 I have one PCP, my least used in that caliber. Here in la America where we still have the semblance of choice… .22 serves quite nicely, doing everything a .177 can, and much more. Handling small .22 pellets or slugs is as small as this particular shooter wants to go… I did a lot of “ice picking” of pests back in my early .177 pump up days. 1377 Crosman American Classic, many mice, pigeons, rats, sparrows and starlings… But today? No .177s for I…

I’m right there with you Leon! .22 and .25 for me! Maybe a .30 along the way. But guys got me tempted to try given what they get done with them :)

500 slugs for $18.

I and 1 friend wiped out 5 and half gallon ziplock bags full of starlings in a short time today. The only noise generated was the insane POP of those 10.03gr grenades dropping birds. (JSb Ko mk3). Dead holds from 20-60. Only 10 MOA drop at 100. I cannot believe the results these tiny things produce.

That you can “get a lot done with them” is proven by those “constrained” to the caliber. Let your passion rule in the endeavor, no harm or foul, it is but a hobby… Looking forward to reading where you may head with this...🙏

Guns and preffer ammo sizes

Leshiy Classic .1776-.1778
Hatsan At44 .1776- .1778
P35X .1771 and .1776
Avenger .1771
Dreamline .1775-.1778
Crown .1775-.1778
Impact Mk2, Mk3 .1775-.178
Uragan 2 .178
Vulcan 3 .178
Taipan .1775-.1778

All of these platforms are great for shooting .177 slugs. These are the particular sizes I have come to find through my own experiences and experiences of others I have gathered information from.

I've used the AT44, p35x, impacts, leshiy classic. And I've used all of them but the LC to take out iguanas past 100yds.

Currently @RabbitofCaerbannog owns my previous at44 so he can attest to how good it shoots slugs, and that's a $250 10 year old rifle design.

I have one .177 generating over 30fpe with 16gr slugs.

I also still shoot .22 and .25. .177 is cheaper and for me feels like more of a challenge at range. Big results from itty bitty slug.

There is a p35 in classifieds for 325 shipped. Also a dreamline classic 177 for 650.

And yes @JaceSpace1369, that at44 is a killing machine with those 10.03 KOs. Now it's reg'd POI is constant. And it can also launch heavier slugs at impressive velocities

.177 is easy to propel fast and the slugs are just as light as the average pellet. 10.3 is relatively minor, but boutique slugs start relatively light at 12 or 12.5/13 too Imagine a 25.4gr .25 slug.

Open the transfer port wheel to .22 or 25/30. Higher pressure more spring

I will not contest the shown, by many, lethality of said .177 slugs. But for me, personally? When going after pests, it’s about “end results”. I challenge myself in other ways towards the goal. I can buy the argument that these .177 slugs have great expansion and limited “ice picking” or pass throughs…? But for me “pellets”? Simply get it done… 🙏 That said, its great that there are so many different ways to smoke those nasty vermin.

Amen to that.

Yeah but I thought the barrels can’t deal with slugs and won’t get them stable? Never occurred to me that it might be different in .177…

10.03 slug at 950

Yeah if you swapped to superior in the Dreamline I get it… I really like the Dreamline classic…
My dl came with superior. Now has superior slug
However as far as I know .177 superior heavy is as fast as .177 FX liners get. Unless 1:16 been released for 177.
1:18 should do up to 14 or 15gr Slugs well

Shooting around a house and in flower beds for chipmunks, or up in trees at starlings, I like to use the .177 because they ricochet less and with less energy left over. Also, they are quiet enough that sometimes I get a second shot at starlings, that never happens with my .22's. If I am shooting slugs, then under 75y for these pests the .177 rules, flat out better. My Hatsan Vectis, yes my cheap $235 Hatsan Vectis, using 12.5gr NSA slugs at 880fps can shoot 3/4" groups at 75y. It is just about perfect for chippies and starlings. You definately want a .177 in your stable.

I forgot to mention, and should, that I did cut the factory muzzlebrake off of the Vectis and directly attached a Tanto. It makes a big difference , so add a $100 to that cost.

Well dreamlines still get to use the same liners that the impact use. They don't have as much adjustability but they shoot just as good. Specially if you use the lighter slugs.

For me, using slugs like VK or Jsb KO v3 10.03gr are amazing and are better than pellets. Why? Because they won't over penetrate, and if for some reason they do, these slugs have hp that expand so good that they are ineffective once they come out. Also with VK slugs when hunting iguanas they could hit the targer as slow as 700fps and that slug will still grenade inside it's target.

The only Fx rifles with 1:16 twist barrel liners are the Panthera/dynamic/king in 600mm and 700mm all others are 1:18

I'm glad you rugged it for a consistent shot count and POI.
