.177 FX barrels?

A while back I stopped by a local airgun shop and was informed that the FX barrels in .177 don't shoot well. They said that if someone was looking for a .177 then another manufacturer would be a better route. Is this a matter of the shop not selling FX or is there some truth behind? I am looking for a .177 for plinking and have my eyes on a Dreamline as an entry to PCP guns but figured it would be a good idea to look into it. The Dreamline to me seems to provide an entry level PCP gun with enough flexibility not to paint you into a corner with regards to what you can do with it. That said, the Daystate Huntsman is also on the short list followed by a hard left turn with a AA TX200.

You really need a second opinion. My buddy Dreamline with a few targets @ 33 yds.

Thanks folks, looks like my spider senses were tuned up on the day I stopped in. My gut feeling was that if FX was known for accuracy with the larger pellets then they surely wouldn't put out garbage in .177
Not panning FX, but just because a company makes airguns in one caliber that shoot well, does not mean that all calibers they make will.

Example given: DAR. They stopped making .177 and the .177 DAR I own has been hard to get consistent MOA although it sometimes gets sub-MOA... just not consistently.

From what I have read and can glean from these forums, airgun barrels, especially in .177, are a crap shoot as to quality. FX is no better.

I think it is "Aim Small" who posted a video where he had to purchase a LW barrel for his .177 FX to get consistent precision with slugs. The stock .177 barrel sucked.

Yes, he was testing slugs, but used a pellet to establish a "control group". The LW barrel did much better with pellets or slugs.

Just a thought... (grin)

p.s.

Just a note about low priced .177 airguns. The Nova Vista Freedoms I own in .177 were TACK DRIVERS! If the onboard pumps (and soft poppets) had not failed, I would still be shooting them.

They only cost $299 at the time. I only wish I had bought the Liberty model instead (no onboard pump) but still had the soft poppet problem... (sigh)

Couple of 3 shot groups at 30 yards with Dreamline 177 with 500mm barrel with 20fpe HFT tune. I guess it could be better.

I don’t feel my Thomas is any more accurate, might be a bit more consistent but not 4x the price more accurate or even 2x for that matter. There are people who think anything FX is over priced hot garbage so YMMV.

Seems that some of the older .177 FX models did quite well and have a good following for that reason. It also seems that the newer FX models are not nearly as good (barrels) in .177, but I am only saying that from what I have read. I have never owned any FX gun... mainly because of the price(s).

Oh well, if I had all of the money I have spent on other PCP airguns, I could have bought one or 2, maybe. I have no regrets except that I wish I had bought Libertys instead of Freedoms.

Nice shooting! It is a VERY good feeling to know you can hit what you are aiming at! From time to time I will see someone posting how their airgun is "boringly" accurate.

Damn! I wish I was that bored all the time! (chuckle)

No idea what or why some people are having such bad opinions of FX 177 barrels but hey, what’s internet without opinion based opinions? I only have 5 FX 177 barrels myself( would of been more wasn’t for the barrel shortage) and all of them shoot very well out of my Dreamline and crowns. In case people say oh qball is just a FX fan boy blindly follow the cool YouTubers, I like to remind those people that I compare my FX barrel’s accuracy to my brand new Thomas with the fanciest custom order, hand picked, hand lapped and polished LW poly barrel, it’s so secret Mike won’t give you ANY details on it if you ask. Granted both barrels are more accurate than me so take that with a grain of salt, for my FT use they aren’t different. But I have a feeling Thomas would be better at BR but I don’t do that at least yet. If you have a better 177 barrel than my custom order, hand picked and finished barrel by Mike then I would like to see!

As far as lower budget goes my 300 dollar 1720T (used) factory “high power” tune is not really less accurate either until the distance stretches out a bit mainly because of low power. My longest squirrel kill with it at 10 FPE is 48 yards, but it never leaves my little suburbia yard either. The 1720T absolutely is one of the most over looked little gem, highly recommend taking a look at it especially it’s really not any more expensive than budget Chinese guns.

While I've not had any direct experience with FX liners, with as much variation in accuracy results as I've seen from non-FX barrels......Stating something like "FX liners in .177 don't shoot well" is just too broad of a brush stroke. For example, no all LWs are great and not all are horrible.

Sounds like qball has had pretty good luck with .177 FX liners. I'm sure others have had not so good luck. Everything under the sun (and likely the universe) can be represented by bell curves of distribution.

As an aside, heck yes Qball! My 1720T shoots REALLY well too. And I also highly recommend that folks take a look at them. (Or rather, try to find a used one! cuz I haven't seen any new ones listed for sale for awhile).

I have to say my fx 177 barrel does not shoot as good as my .22 and up barrels. I can get my .177 barrel to do good and tight groups but only at higher speeds 800 to 850 fps, with heavy 16 .2 gr pellets, and I still get a fair amount of fliers. The speeds I do with my 177 to get good groups exceed the slow speeds I can do with lighter pellets in my .22 fx barrel. The reason I got the 177 was to get 12 ft/lb accuracy. I can't seem to do that, get tight groups, with very few to no fliers.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a 177 fx barrel. Maybe i am too critical. For me I was hoping to get sub 12 pound rifle that was a precision paper puncher to 50 yards. I was hoping to do above 190 In the 30 yd target challenge. I can't do that yet. This is what I get with 8 shots 2 fliers. This is 35 yards.

The one below with 9 shots. 2 fliers. Same 35 yards. All just done about 20 mins ago. Sure the 2 and 3 shot groups are smaller. But why so many fliers every 8-9 shots? Oh these are all at about 815 fps.

Allen, how is your muzzle report? What's your reg setting? my guess you are at around 80 bars.

177 is not as efficient as 22 because of the MUCH smaller surface area the air pressure can exert force on. My guns are never under even 120 bars, my crown is at 140 bars shooting 177 at 8-20 fpe. You need the higher reg to get more efficient tune so the muzzle blast doesn't push the little 177 pellet around.

I have mixed feelings about the FX 177 liners. My first FX was a Maverick in 177 when they were first released. Compact with a 500mm barrel. It was ok but was always left wanting more. Never was able to get that setup to shoot slugs consistently. Did good with pellets but I eventually turned that setup into a 22 sniper which works way better. Fast forward I now have a 177 M3 600mm barrel. This gun is much more accurate than my Maverick was. Shoots Zan and JSB 13gr slugs really well. FX did release a slug liner in 177 for preorder over a year ago which I jumped on immediately. Still waiting???? I don't think FX would release a liner in 177 if it didn't preform well with something. Found the JSB 10 and 13gr pellets worked the best with my Maverick set up. Maybe it's as simple as the liner lottery??? Now if they would finally come out with that 177 slug liner!!! :)
