.177 pellet weight for 10M Pistol

I recently purchased a Match Guns model MGH1 with mechanical release.

I've been shooting RWS Meisterkugeln Professional Line wad cutters weighing 8.2gr and they group very well rested.

Of course everyone is out of stock on these but they do have the same pellets in 7gr.

This pistol is shooting ~430fps with a barrel length of 240mm.

Do you think the 7gr RWS will shoot ok?

Do you have any other recommendations for pellets?

AWESOME pistol!

Most top-quality match pellets are made in "rifle" and "pistol" weights, the latter always being lighter (back in the day, the old UIT organization - predecessor of todays ISSF - had an odd rule that air rifle match ammo had to weigh no less than a solid lead ball of 4.5mm diameter, which is about 8.2 grains. No longer current, but "rifle" pellets still hover around there.)

But moving faster, and getting out of the gun quicker, are generally an advantage with a match gun (especially with pistols, if you're as wobbly as me). Lighter ammo should be great. RWS, H&N, JSB, and Vogel all make very fine match flatheads that offer similar quality in different weights.

I have found most of my pistols that shoot the Meisterkugeln 7gr also shoot the 8.2gr well so I expect your gun will shoot the 7gr fairly well at ten meters. You might want to just buy a tin to make sure before you start grabbing all you can get though.

As stated by esingle a good number of my .177 pistols shoot the RWS H points amazingly well too.

I shoot 8.4 grain JSB out of my FWB300S & pistols. They stack from everything out to 30 yards.
Being the Diabolo pellets are self stabilized and at low 10m speeds, how can they not if bore is good, form is true? I think it's just a matter of an individual setting on weight/speed. 
They're all 4.51 but it doesn't seem to matter from SSP & PCP. 
You might want to check their OD.

Edit: just looked at my gauge picture. Those are CPHP's at 4.54mm. Good for the 48 or anything that likes a oversized pellet.

I did see that, at least RWS, called the 7gr pistol and the 8.2gr rifle pellets. I didn't understand why but now do, thanks.

Hello In my FWB's (65's,300s, and 700) I shoot RWS super H points with very good results. I'm not going to win any metals with them but I do find them very accurate and a little easier to load due to the shape of the pellet head. Just my experience hope this helps Eric.

My own extensive testing while tuning a raft of pistols over many years, takes a different look…

I found for typical air pistol barrels 8” to 10” lengths that a pellet making 510fps to 520 fps had got clear of the barrel before any recoil takes place..Giving an additional shift in your accuracy potential.

Anything much below this speed is impacted by the inherent recoil in the gun….its why i am able to extract so much accuracy from a humble springer pistol…along with a good trigger and decent pistol marksmanship..

Group was made off hand with a quality red dot…

I arrived at the 500fps figures due to a novel experiment arrived at by accident in this gun…

With recoiless pistols this will not be so obvious, or as important but still a slight benefit…

So IMO the pellets making the highest velocity in your gun should not be overlooked…

That Matchguns MGH-1 is certainly a top of the line shooter. It will take your far! Designed by Cesare Morini, of Morini air pistol fame. I have never had the pleasure to shoot one.


I stick with heavy pellets in my Morini’s. One pistol is more accurate with RWS R10 4.50 8.2 gr.; and the other pistol is more accurate with JSB Heavy, 8.26 gr. If I had to choose one for both, I would pick the JSB’s.
