18” LW barrel is pretty amazing

I’ve been shooting a variety of projectiles out of my modified Talon P at about 30 yards. This has an 18” .25 LW barrel and doug noble hammer and spring (valve should be incoming one of these days).

First, the JSB heavies shoot very consistently. I guess I should expect this, but I didn’t get any flyers and basically all of the shots that deviated much from the sim point i think clearly reflected my own issues with timing and movement.

I then tried a few slugs that I cast:

1. MP molds 48 grain round nose
2. NOE 50 grain BBT (FN and HP)
3. NOE 60 grain BBT (FN and HP)

They all basically went to the same spot, and only a little bit of windage adjustment was needed for the 50 grain BBT. All three of these shot at least as well as the JSB in my completely non-scientific experiment. The reason I was comparing these is I was thinking there would be a clear-cut choice for which was the best projectile to cast for that choked barrel but at this range I was able to get similar sized groups for all of these. I assumed the JSB would be obviously most accurate, but not so much. I might as well cast my own rather than purchase those at this point since they all exceed my personal shooting accuracy.

In this set, the MP molds seems like it was slightly more accurate but that could just be luck and I will probably end up casting this one just because it’s a Six cavity mold and works very well.

How fast are you launching those 48 gr? I have some of them but unfortunately my regulator tops out at 2100 psi and I would need closer to 2400-2500 psi to launch those are a decent speed.

I would imagine a 23.5"~ barrel would be ideal for my case, however if you're running higher pressures you may have much better luck than I with a shorter barrel! Kudos!

I’ve been gradually ramping up my involvement with my airguns, now that I’m settling into my new home here in NY.

The neighbors are great and are interested in air guns and have zero issues with my shooting and actually get a kick out of it.

Today I was doing some lazy experimenting (no chrony) but learned something nonetheless. Swapping valves and barrels around on my Air Force guns I put a Doug Noble valve and 4500 psi tank behind an 18” .25 LW barrel in a TalonP frame. Absent mindedly I left the stock spring in there, which is obviously way under powered for this valve. With the power wheel on 12 I could just knock it open up at about 3800 psi and shoot light pellets at what felt like 600 fps or so. Once the pressure in the tank dropped a bit the velocity started increasing and pellets started really cooking at around 3200 psi or so.

by the time the tank was down to 2600 psi (after a ridiculous number of shots, I lost count) it was shooting 24 gr pellets at almost the speed of sound. you don’t really need a chronograph to tell that you’re up over 1000 FPS….
It was shooting very consistently at 35 yards, obviously the poi climbed gradually as velocity did.

Switched to jsb heavies for a while - these are great in this barrel and seem like a great balance between pellet and slug characteristics.

I am looking forward to getting a heavy spring in there and getting a chronograph set up to see what kind of power this carbine can deliver. I am guessing well over 100 fpe.

Stubbers, when I get the chronograph set up I will shoot some strings with the 48 grain boat tails. in the past the 18 inch barrel has generally shot at around 60 to 80 FPE depending on tank pressure, hammer spring pre load, and pellet/slug weight. I am pretty sure those slugs were going somewhere around 800-850 fps since I had the power wheel on a low/medium setting.

Hi .. at first when you started your post about the AF guns..even when at the time I had 3 .. I was in to other guns such a the new crickets uragans and vulcans . Bu I keep collecting. 25 bullet molds. 225 and 257 molds + a few more AF frames and parts such as barrels and dough valves I have 5 now including a .30 one with the .30 barrel machined by him and it shoots awesome..I finally found a machinists to work on any barrel I choose to buy or have made .. there is simply nothing that I could want in the pcp maket..I such fun been able to put together any configuration you need with unlimited power...I have sold must of other things..I keep my 3 uragans + a 308 bulldog that is in the finishing touches..but my AF I have 6 frames now..and I'm not planning to let go any one of them... ony one gun catches my eyes.. and maybe yours to and the is the bull barrel fitted, DonnyFL red panda.. that should be aviable by the end of 2023.
