20 yard rat gun on a low budget?

DO NOT get a Benjamin Wildfire! I have one and it is horrible! it has an 11Lb PLUS trigger pull. Makes it almost un-shootable (at least as far as accuracy goes). For a Pistol at that close of a range you could do a Crosman 1701P and add the larger TP from the 1720 (I have taken a squirrel with the 1701P in stock form at 25 yards but it was a perfect conditions type shot). The 1720 is another good option (as is the Prod but I like .177 for rats). Both are single shot so be aware of that limitation. For a rifle really the sky is the limit. I'm partial to my Hatsan AT-44 as it is a tack driver and I got mine on sale for $250. I added a TKO and it is mouse fart quiet. It is on the heavy side so a good rest would be in order, but I get 40 shots per fill (4 magazines) in .177. It has never had any issues and I got a spare cylinder for mine so I can go 80 shots before needing to fill. If you want to go with a wildfire let me know as I'm pretty sure it is gonna get sold here soon (I fixed my leak and it has held air for going on a year since I last pulled (ok tugged) the trigger)

I second not getting the Benjamin wild fire because not only does it have a heavy trigger, a lot of them are Leakers. Was wondering what your budget was because there are people on here mentioning guns costing much more than the three that you mentioned. And as far as One person mentioning valve poppet problems with the Maximus and fortitude, that’s a new one on me. Never had that problem with either one of mine and haven’t heard anybody else although I know it can happen on any gun no matter what it cost. My preference would be The fortitude because it’s a $300 gun and it is light and accurate. As a 3000 Psi tank which for me it isn’t hard to fill but you don’t have to fill it all the way anyway.

I had a Gamo Urban that I had to return because WalMart destroyed the box in shipping. But the gun felt good for the price. Didn’t even shoot it because I had no fill probe. But lots of folks here like them.

Another gun, same barrel, low to mid price, BSA Ultra SE. I haven’t got one yet, but all my inquiries have led to very positive feedback.

Both simple, unregulated, & BSA barrels.

Hey fellas, good ideas! Thanks and pleas keep them coming. Choices aren’t just the Beni/Crosman stuffs, those are just some of the initial ideas I had. I would have recommended one of the CO2 Crosman’s but he specified she (wife) doesn’t want to mess with the cartridges and nearly every CO2 gun I have had leaks and needs attention. These people aren’t “Airgunners” like we are so I’m trying to give them ideas that don’t need work out of the box or in the near future.

I also thought about the PP series pistols but they will need additional $$$ for adapters and moderators to make them quiet. Trying to keep my ideas for them reasonably priced? I don’t have a definition for “reasonably priced” but I personally feel recommending something over $400-500 total package price is getting too much for the average person (read non airgunner). He did come to me and asked about a particular gun listed on CL and they were asking $725 and he was considering it at that price so he may go up in $$$. I just wanted to have some ideas with lower cost to give him when we meet next week. I’ll be loaning him a couple of mine to use and see what he thinks and how well they are for his wife to use also. I’ll get more feedback from them to see what their needs/desires are. He may go big and get something great but I certainly don’t want to give him a $1000 price tag and it be like ”NO WAY!” Ha Ha!

I also have a .22 cal Streamline that I’ll be loaning them. I will see where they are after some time using the tools I have loaned. I would be willing to part with that rifle for a song if they are interested but I don’t want to steer them there for a sell if you know what I mean. I’m not even going to offer it to them until they try out some stuff and see where they want to go.

I'll throw in my 2 cents.

The Diana Stormrider: Pros ... lightweight, inexpensive. Shoots w/higher velocity than most. Cons ... W/o moderator, a rather inconsistent shot spread. Some owners complain of only so-so accuracy (out of the box). Lastly, they'll be hard to find until May.

Benjamin Fort-dude: Light, quiet & accurate, however, the .22 is comparatively low in power, w/barely more ft-lbs than the .177. Both would stop a rat's heart from beating, though!

Dont understand why not co2...

20 yard rat gun on a budget that's about all their gonna get. Just get a Sheridan 2260MB and be done...

Being on a budget I'm assuming they will be using a hand pump on a pcp.... boy those co2 carts start looking good.

The lady doesn't want co2. Never argue with a woman.

Agreed- Johnny- They are the Boss!

Mochajoe- this ones better-

I was going to suggest a Prod but if these people aren’t airgunners and don’t want to mess with CO2’s, I really can’t picture them standing over a hand pump. Maybe just an older RWS or Webley springer in the 600-800fps range. They are not the angry plastic box store cannons that people associate with springers. You should be able to find one for a good price. My buddy and I absolutely destroyed rats at a chicken farm with our springers using wadcutters. I used a Webley Vulcan and he a RWS 26 maybe. It was a 600fps sweetheart to shoot.

Odoyle your right ! Love it
