2015 Pyramyd Air Cup
”The Boomer Chronicles”
So the trip started out on Thursday morning when Greg arrived at my house. We hung out for a little bit since he has a 2 ½ hour drive from his house to mine. After we chatted about some of his “World’s” stories and he was able to stretch his legs, we hopped in his ride for the 8 hour drive and we were off to Ohio. After a couple of stops for food and gas we arrived at the hotel and relaxed for a few minutes before hitting the rack.
Friday started off at the sight in range for a few hours of everyone getting set up for Saturday’s competition. After traveling to Ohio some people needed to make some adjustments to their scopes and even their rigs. Velocities and POI’s had shifted a little here and there for some. In my case on Friday during sight-in I was falling about 15 fps slower than at home but POI was the same as it was at home through the whole zoom/yardage range. I chalked it up to a nice sight-in session and headed over to the far right side of the range to play with the rifle I was planning on using for the Gunslinger event to be had later that afternoon. I showed up over there and sat down next to Ted Bier and began to have a little fun. Ted and I were having fun shooting all the “shoot to reset” Remington targets that were set out at around 45-65 yards. We took turns knocking the kz down and resetting it for about an hour. I went through 4-5 tanks of air so we were going at it for a while. We were just sitting there laughing like little kids and high fiving as we went back and forth with simultaneous shot attempts at the “up” kz. It was some of the most fun I have had with Ted in the past 2 years of the PAC. The winds made it a little hard to hit things every shot at 60+ yards but we just kept going and going laughing the whole time.
The Gunslinger…
We started off with cloudy skies and no rain….the first 2 rounds stayed dry but then the skies opened up and the staff eventually ended up soaked to the core trying to reset all the silhouettes after each round. The rain did make the wind a little easier to see but did not make anything any easier at all. Go shoot 60 yards at a 1/10 NRA silhouette in rain and wind and tell me it is easy!!! HAH!!!
I had a bye my first round and ended up winning my next 2 rounds to advance to the quarter finals. Unfortunately I ran into the “BUZZSAW” that we know as TED! (under my breath…oh shiz…I am fast, but anyone but Ted in the quarters)…. So I told Ted I was sorry and wished he had not requested to shoot against me just to pound my head in the dirt(he really did pound me, but didn’t request it..) I looked over and well wouldn’t you know it!!! Greg Sauve, my travel partner is standing over next to Ted chatting looking like he is all ready to root for Ted AGAINST me in this round!!! So I goofed around and yelled to Greg…”Hey you’re at the wrong table Homie!” and he proceeded to tell me “Sorry and I was probably going to have to hitchhike back home cuz he wants to root for Ted now!” WHAT THE WHAT?!?! After the beating Ted administered to me we gave a big hug and handshake and he got ready to pillage another helpless soul and vanquish them from the competition. So in between rounds I helped judge the next round of competitors and I was asked to judge Rossi’s next round. Rossi was on my left and his competitor was on my right( I forgot if it was Tom Holland or Alex Elder). So the Range Master counted down from 3-1 and yelled GO! Everyone started loading and shooting as fast as they could. Rossi was ahead for the first couple of rows of targets but his competitor caught up fast when Rossi missed a few longer shots. It came down to both of them with a single target left to shoot. Rossi had one at 25 yards and his competitor at 60 yards. I heard both of them discharge at the same time and hear the silhouettes both go down at almost the exact same time! TINK…TINK….DANG!!!! Why did I have to be the judge of this one!!!!!! So with that the Pyramyd Air Staff allowed them to shoot off for the win. Each needed to knock a single target down in each row and the first to do so moves on. Rossi turned on the afterburners and won the shoot off in quick order to advance to the next round. WOW! What an exciting day this has been so far.
Friday night after all the sight in’s were done and Gunslinger finals had been set established, we had a group of about 13-15 head out to dinner at The Texas Roudhouse. It was great conversation with old and new friends alike. All ate great food and had plenty to talk about since a few of them had just returned from the World’s. There were plenty of stories to be told over some awesome grub and ice cold drinks! Unfortunately overnight on Friday the rains started and did not let off until Saturday around 8pm…
Day 1 of FT Saturday
The day started off cold and rainy and never changed! We reached about 58-60ish with cloudy skies with rain and wind all day long. At Sight-in my velocity went back to normal right at 797.8 fps but for some reason my POI was low. I added 7 clicks and that got the POI back in line through the whole range to I just added 7 clicks to every number today to start out. I was hoping it would slowly go back once it warmed up through the day, but that never happened. It maintained the 7 + clicks to each number all day long and I did not even think about it again. Wind was pretty bad but marginally manageable at times. The longer shots were always scary cuz the wind had a tendency to change as the shot was flying in the air without notice. Because the rain was forecast days in advance the Pyramyd Air staff decided to set up the targets so we could all sit under the covered rifle range’s concrete pads instead of us sitting out there at the 50 yard line like last year. That would have caused everyone to sit out directly in the rain with absolutely no protection or cover anywhere for at least 50 yards. That was a very good call by the Pyramyd Air staff. That made a lot of people happy to know they were not going to be sitting directly in the rain all weekend long. Do understand that did not keep anyone 100% dry though! The winds were wikked! And blew the rain at you under the covered range so it was a great idea to move us under there but Mother Nature still wanted to make it difficult on us. On this day every point was earned, there was nothing to take for granted on this day on this course. Every shot had to be taken at the correct time or you were missing the kz. On this day I had the pleasure of shooting with Tom Perretti from Canada and All Otter. This was the first time I had met either and BOY! Am I glad I did get to meet both of these Gentlemen. Tom is one heck of a nice guy and just awesome person. He and I had the same 3D printed butt hook from Brian Samson and I had a couple of screws loose(on the butthook, not my head) and he grabbed his tools and went to it without question. What an awesome guy! I am humbled to say that I know Tom now. Al is one of the most interesting men you can meet. He has all the best gear and loves to make them better and easier to use so he has all kinds of awesome mod’s that help him do his job. It is really nice to talk to him since he is also very experienced. My day 1 was filled with major FT vets! YES!!! I did well on day 1, but still dropped 12 shots, I left money on the table and knew I could have had a couple more points. The wind was tough to read and at times I could not even perceive a head wind cuz my wind flag was not showing one, but when I released the shot it was quite obvious that downrange there was a quartering headwind as my pellets either hit the face plate at 4:30-5:00 or 7:30-8:00 low just outside the kz. It was my consistent miss this weekend both days. I definitely found out I need some more practice competing in windy conditions. Even so after day 1 it was Harrold Rushton in 1st with 41/48, Greg Sauve with 38/48, Knobs with 37/48, ME tied with Tom Holland and Jeff Paddock with 36/48. YES! I ended up tied for 4th place after day 1 and very happy to say the least. I had a shot at a podium spot after day 1!!! This guy was happy with that no questions asked!!!
The Banquet
After we all had a great time on Saturday we headed back to the hotels to get cleaned up and head out to The Elk Lodge for the PAC Banquet dinner. Pyramyd Air and other sponsors provided prizes for the raffle. Everyone could buy tickets and put them into a fish bowl and after a while Ted ended up drawing tickets for the winners. Ted ended up winning one of the great packages with a RWS springer, scope, rings, and pellets and as the humble man that Ted is, he walked over to one of the junior shooters and asked his mother if he could give the boy this great package. The mother said YES!!! And the boy jumped in the air and rolled on the floor he was freaking out excited. He ran up and had his picture taken with Ted and continued to scream YES!!! Oh my god!! YES!!! It was awesome to see such unbridled enthusiasm from such a generous act of kindness from Ted.
Rossi was able to headline the evening and said a few words about the sponsors and read off all the ticket numbers for the raffle so he was running the show and it worked out VERY well! Rossi definitely knows how to get and keep your attention on him at all times. Not a single person was looking around. Everyone was fixated on Rossi as he read the ticket numbers. The food was awesome as usual and we had a great time sharing another meal and ice cold drinks with great friends.
Day 2, Sunday
The rain stopped around 7am but things were still very wet since it had rained all night long. Roads were muddy and the gravel paths to the PAC match inside Tusco were very muddy. Unfortunately when the rains pushed out they brought with them a vindictive little mistress named “ALOTAFREAKINGWIND” in every direction at the same time. I was holding at 3 o’clock inside the right of the kz for a right to left wind and exactly as I released the pellet my wind flag switched to parallel to the ground left to right. YA! 100% opposite direction without warning……My pellet had no chance at all and ended up 1 inch outside the kz at 3 o’clock cuz of the wind change. I also was not able to figure out the wonky quartering headwinds since they were swirling so much. The majority of my misses on Sunday were low because I was not able to work out or wait out the headwinds since I was not able to detect them. Al Otter had an awesome little tube with a fan blade mounted to his USFT and that shows him when there is any sort of headwind. Now I know why!!! I was squaded with Tom Holland on day 2 and I was able to watch him successfully dope the wind all day long. It was great to meet Tom and even better to shoot all day with him. After day 2 the final WFTF division scores were Harrold Rushton with 46/52(87total), Greg Sauve 45/52(83total), Tom Holland 43/52(79total), Knobs 40/52(77 total), Jeff Paddock 39/52(75 total), Brian Vandenboom 31/52(67 total) tied with Tyler Patner 37/52(67 total). WOW! I did well though I was beat down by the wind on Sunday. I cannot complain when I land directly in the middle of 3 of the top of the list of current TEAM USA members! I am not going to complain one bit! Successful weekend in my books!!!! This wind and rain was the absolutely most difficult conditions I have ever competed in ever. I have never encountered these conditions before so to be able to finish where I did, I am very happy.
On a side note: On Sunday Leo Duran had a gun failure on his 2nd lane. He was going to pack it in and just watch his squad mates and score for them. I told him to stop trying to compete with cheap sh^! Whiscombes and he would not have this problem! I asked him if he would like to change groups and join us to allow him to shoot my rig. He declined humbly but I insisted since he came all the way from Texas to compete that he change his mind and use my rig for the rest of the day. I confirmed with my lane partner Tom Holland if this was ok with him and he agreed with me, Leo came way too far to sit and watch people, so Leo jumped into our group and began to get familiarized with my Rig. Obviously he is used to a springer so a Hammerli AR20FT customized to me that was completely foreign to him. It took him about 10 good shots to get the hang of the rig since my trigger goes off without a first stage at all. It is already set to the back wall and any pressure will allow it to discharge. This is a huge difference from what he is used to using so that took him a little getting used to before he got the hang of it, but once he did, like the pro he is, he started doing VERY well. He cleaned the kneeling lane after I missed all 4 shots on that lane just before him. Not that I wasn’t mad enough about missing all 4 kneeling shots, he grabs my rig and CLEANS THE LANE!!! Awesome job Leo! He had a smile on his face all day long and that made it all worth it to me. I would do it all over again if I had to.
After the match was done they had the finals of the Gunslinger event. Ted Bier ended up cleaning up in the PCP class and Ray Apelles swooped in and took home tops honors in the Spring division. Both Ted and Ray are the only 2 winners of this event since this is the 2nd annual Pyramyd Air Cup and both men won their respective classes last year as well. In true Ted Bier fashion as he was presented the winning trophy and check for $1000 for first place, he asked for the mic! Ted proceeded to donate the $1000 first place check to 3 junior shooters that were competing in the event this weekend. So if you add it all up, Ted donated more than $2000 in personal winnings this weekend between airguns and scope packages to outright cash winnings!!! WOW! I have known Ted for a couple of years now and I know he is a good guy but he never seems to stop amazing me with his continued generosity. He continues to help drive this sport even though he was not there to compete in the FT event. He just made 3 junior competitors days/weeks/months/years! And did not want anything but a handshake and head nod. Class A+++ guy in my books and I will always enjoy time spent with Ted in the future.
After the award ceremony was done the producers of American Airgunner gathered everyone that was still around and we did a sound byte and closed the show with Rossi. Everyone gathered around and held up their trophies and Rossi in true Rossi fashion with high energy and great personality kicked it off!!! At the end of his little sentence we all yelled “American Airgunner” to close the show. It was a GREAT weekend!!! I look forward to doing it again for many years to come. I am not sure how they can make this event any better other than the weather. I am sure they will find a way to blow our expectations again next year just like they did this year. Last year was great, but this year was 100% better and I have a feeling they will just continue along this path and make it better and better every year. I am hooked and going back every year I can!!! Thank you to all the Pyramyd Air Staff for all they did!!! It would not have happened without these people. Tyler Patner was an amazing Host, Match Director and great friend. Kristen and Stormy, Derek, Cory, and Patrick were just awesome help as usual. I cannot ask for better people to work with. They make this experience what it is, we just come there to enjoy the competition. Their work showed and this match was one of the best I have ever competed in thanks to them.
THANK YOU PYRAMYD AIR
