2017 BAGA Monster Match
October 21, 2017 in Bristol, Wisconsin
Hello Everyone,
Well, it turned out to be a GREAT day back in the woods in South/East Wisconsin at BAGA for our final scheduled FT match of the year. Temps were in the upper 70’s with a considerable amount of gusting wind(7-20mph). We had 17 competitors show up to throw down against the hardest course set at BAGA in 3 years. We set 20 lanes, 6 of which are brand new for this match with 3 targets per lane and took 2 shots at each target for a total of 120 shots for the day. We did have a single target malfunction bad enough to remove it from the match, so that is why you will see final scores totaled against 118, instead of 120. The target worked for some people and not for others, so Alex did not want to be giving shots to people and just removed the target from the match all together. Aside from that target we had ZERO cold lines for the whole match!!! The course was set VERY long, so the average distance was close to 40 yards. There were only 2-3 targets in the 20-30 yard range for the whole course and we had a few lanes with all 3 targets beyond 40 yards and one lane that saw all 3 targets beyond 50 yards. We had a ¼” target between 19-21 yards that put up a fit for many, but the best of the best handled it but may have created a diamond from butt pucker during the process. We had a squirrel up in the tree about 7 yards in front of you, but it ranged 12-14 yards on your scope, so it was at a VERY extreme angle up. The target was also mounted to a 2x4 pedestal and as a result was swaying back and forth 4-6 inches in each direction while you tried to shoot it in the heavy winds we experienced during the match. It was fun trying to track the target while you were leaning back at 40-50 degrees backwards. The 3 new lanes up top were all extreme downhill shots in the 20-35 degree downhill range. The offhand lane was one of the extreme downhill lanes and featured one target at 50-55yards. Yes, it was an offhand shot beyond 50 yards, downhill 30 degrees. Yes, it was VERY hard. Yes, it was a LOT of FUN!!!! And yes, many of the competitors cleaned that far target though as you would expect there was a bit of chatter about that one after the match cuz it was hard as heck. So, in total we had a target EXTREME uphill, we had 6 targets at considerable downhill and the rest were either very long or very small kz, but it was an awesome match to say the least.
We know that AAFTA made the change to 16x for Hunters, so we offered both options at this match. Basically, come on out and shoot what you have ready to go and HAVE FUN!!!! Alex wanted no reason for someone to NOT be able to make it out to this match, so he awarded for both 12x and 16x as the competitors were allowed to decide before the match which they would compete in.
I think it is obvious that we need to thank all of our RO’s and volunteers that make any match at BAGA possible, let alone the multi week effort that went into completely transforming this course into a brand-new course for a single match, the 2017 BAGA Monster Match! Thanks to everyone that showed up to shoot and thanks to everyone that helped prepare the course and thanks to Alex for being MD and running the whole show while I was able to enjoy a full day of competing and not running things.
Note sure if 2017 is in the bag or not yet, Mother Nature will brief us as she gets final details. We will do what we can to keep the course set up until we move indoors in November, so if you missed the match today, come on out before we go inside, and we can pull strings to have some more fun.
Thanks to everyone that made this 2017 Field Target season at BAGA AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
