2018 Pyramyd Air Cup (A joke)

DISCLAIMER: I did not compete this year an withdrew so I am only speaking on the parts OTHER THAN the actual competitions!

I wasn't going to post anything because I just don't believe in all the BS that gets thrown around recently, but this had to be said in my eyes. I went to the PAC last year 2017 for the first time as a novice airgunner just getting into the sport and it was enjoyable for the very little they had. I heard so much hype about this event and signed up to compete this year but withdrew as I just didn't feel it was for me and just wanted to enjoy seeing vendors and shooting at the demo range but...... Almost no one showed and for good reasons: The event was a mud pit, the demo range was a plastic table on a slanted hill behind a shed that looked like a garage sale. ( Keep in mind this is Pyramyd Air !) The demo range was around 40 yards at most and had a bunch of heavily shot paper targets and a few spinners. I spoke to several employees who knew almost NOTHING about airguns which is understandable that not everyone is a guru but the people showing and demoing the guns had no idea how to even load them! This became a safety hazard as I watched several people load .22 pellets into .25cal guns and so on... I don't expect this to be Shot show but for the company to hold an event like this and then not even have educated staff with the rifles which none were sighted in just scope mounted and set on a table with pellets and magazines spread all over the table. Super unorganized and very disappointing for most as I heard several people that showed up say " Wow this is it?" and that was after they finally found which area was which because no one said a word to anyone. I will not use Pyramard Air for any transactions from now on and that is solely based on my experience to what I consider an absolute joke for a community which is otherwise so helpful and close. If you plan on going next year I advise you don't but again THIS IS ALL MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY! If you enjoyed the event I can only hope I find a local event in which I enjoy. Sorry other pictures would not upload.

Sounds like a display area wasnt well supervised?

To me this ( unlike most past PA events ) was billed as a Grand prix Field Target event. All the shooting pictures look like excellent shooting conditions - FT is shot in all weather- and a decent range set up considering no room for nice walks in the woods between events.

Normally at a 2 day grand prix event 99% of people would be on the course during shooting. As I remember one year the fellow from March optics saided back with his display as did others, cant have folks just tinkering. It is unusual to have large numbers of non-FT shooters attending but with the "PA" name added seems they may have attracted several.

Shame Tylor wasnt there ( or was and was on the course? ) .

Thanks for your personal opinion. No offense meant and my view only.

Pyramyd Air Cup is a fun, fantastic event that draws primarily Field Target competitors from around the nation and Puerto Rico. The Cup is largely geared toward FT but new airgunners also arrive to watch and consider whether the game is for them. It is a GAME after all. Simulated hunting conditions which includes weather.

Unfortunately, Friday evening the WEATHER arrived in full force. Torrential rain pelted the Tusco Range and left it extremely wet in most areas, including the practice area and weapon demo area.

I do agree that the demo area needed more space like in past years. Apparently the Tusco club decided airgunners were not going to be permitted in the adjacent range area where past shooting has taken place. I say that because I was personally asked not to park in clubs members area because it was reserved for “firearms shooters”. The practice area was also pretty crowded and I know a few shooters who didn’t get enough time to warm up. More space is needed for an event this large.

In my experience, all of the Pyramyd staff and vendors were excellent. Busy, yes, but always available to answer a question. I can’t speak for what you saw in the demo area. I didn’t see any of the safety issues you suggested but I’m sure they will address it.

All in all, it’s worth it for all of the dedicated Field Target fanatics (I use the term loosely because we travel long distances to come to events like this around the country)

ps Spysir- Tyler Patner was the Field Target Match Director and with 104 competitors his job was s busy one in the main course area.

Thanks for reading another opinion.

Yeah, seems like PA Cup is much more dedicated to the Grand Prix Field Target event than to a demo event. I didn't even know the demo table was there till the second day!! It was just my first Grand Prix event and so I don't have anything to compare it to. IMHO it was well organized and well run. The staff were friendly and the two folks who were running it (Tyler and _____) did an excellent job. Tyler as match director had a ton of questions and stuff flying his way and he handled everything very well.

I'm looking forward to next year!

I did not attend, however I understood the event was billed as an airgun competition, not a show/demo. You pay to enter the competition. I assume the demo area was free to anyone that showed up regardless if they were registered for the event. I looked at the event overview and it doesn't even list a demo area at the event. Some GP FT matches have sales/swap/sponsor tables, and even auctions and raffles, but they are not a requirement for GP events.

How about we start working towards event areas that are air gun only. Seems air guns are still step children to powder burner ranges. I have many years as a firearms instructor but now have turned my attention to air guns. Europe is ahead of us in this area do to the fact firearms are so restricted. So instead of demeaning a company for trying put together a shoot for us lets work towards more air gun shooting ranges.

This might be the last year the Cup will be held at Tusco. I am looking forward to another venue that is more accommodating to air gun events.

I shot with a fellow from Canada George both days and a shoot off. I enjoyed shooting the field target match and liked the one combined course layout. You could see and talk to everyone shooting.

The demo table was not ideal but appreciate that they had one. I was able to shoot the Ataman pistol with a red dot.

I would still highly recommend people visit the event even to just watch which one person from Long Island did with his family. The gunslinger event was as always good to watch. The 20% discount is worth the drive as well. I ordered a 16 tins for myself and 20 tins for a friend.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good time at the PA Cup this year(name?). Why did you back out of the FT competition? Anyways as a few have mentioned the Tusco Rifle Range was a bit less than accommodating this year for the match. Why I haven't a clue. If you had come even last year the layout would have been different with more room for sight in and a demo range. Next year should be at a different venue and I implore you to try it again. If you aren't sure of your gun or skills ask to be squaded with me and we you can use my equipment, with coaching.

Hi - this is Kristen with Pyramyd Air. Thank you for your feedback and we're sorry you had a disappointing experience at the Cup. I handle a lot of the logistics of the event, so I wanted to address some things you brought up.

The Pyramyd Air Cup has always been primarily about the competition side of things - our field target and gunslynger competitions are the heaviest part of our workload prior to the event and onsite. We also try to put on a great banquet Saturday night for the competitors to mingle and enjoy each others company. The demo range, along with the 20% off sale, was brought on to give spectators / non-competitors a reason to come check out the Cup. We know that many people don't have the opportunity to try all the airguns they want, so this part of the weekend provides that. This isn't a huge part of our focus, but, regardless - we're sorry this didn't live up to your expectations.

The demo range was a mud pit - no doubt! The torrential rains that hit us Friday night pretty much flooded out the area. Add foot and vehicle traffic, and you have quite a mess on your hands. We were thankful that the rest of the weekend was clear, but couldn't get the ground to recover so well due to the constant traffic throughout the weekend.

The demo range was limited in size because of the space we were allotted for the weekend. Ideally, we'd have more elbow room for a larger demo area as well as sight in range, but unfortunately we weren't able to have the space / room we were hoping for with this event.

Because this is an "all hands on deck" type of event for us, we bring lots of employees with varying knowledge of our products. You may be talking to our photography staff, graphic design staff, someone from our warehouse, someone in HR, etc. - many types of workers helped with the event, not just those more familiar with our product. But you are right, if you encountered someone who had little knowledge for the questions you are asking, we (Pyramyd) should have pulled more experienced people aside to answer your questions. And yes, safety is the utmost concern for us too - so thanks for making us aware of the issues you saw - those will be addressed.

This is our fifth year putting the event on, and we always try to do the best we can with what we have. But every year we learn more, and we make the improvements where we feel we can make them. Thanks for your feedback.

We understand you have the right to take your business elsewhere, and hope you continue to enjoy airguns and the sport for years to come.

Kristen

I will agree with you that the Cup was better last year but ONLY because the Tusco Club were it was held was less accommodating than in years past. They limited the use of areas for practice and Demo lanes to a very small section that was used for practice overflow last year and didn't even bother to cut the grass on the Field Target ranges! NO fault of Pyramyd Air!!! (Bill Rabbitt and Jeff Paddok spent most of Friday afternoon weedwacking the ranges so that it would better for the shooters at there own expense) The P.A. staff could not have been anymore helpful or hard working ! ( Thank You Tyler, Christin and the rest of the hard working staff at Pyramyd) The list of give aways to the winners and raffle prizes at the banquet were EXTREMELY generous as ALWAYS!!!!! If you went there and didn't have fun then shame on you son is all I can say!! Air gunners ,sorry to say are not a huge group but I doubt you will find a group more willing to help a newcomer get started in a hobby !!

I for one am Very appreciative of what Pyramyd Air dose for the airgun community as they don't HAVE to do ANYTHING!! As for you Mrod .25 maybe you should TRY finding a better place for your "transactions" as I'm sure they will still survive with out you if that will make you feel good!!

And good luck finding a" Local event that you will enjoy" as they are few and far between and the ones that have been suggested to you in the past have apparently not met with your high expectations either!! Maybe you should hold an event of your own and see how much work and expense it can en tell ! J.L. McMurray Pa.

Kristen ,

Thank you for taking the time.

I didnt get to attend but looked at all the pictures & reports I could fine ( do know 1 or 2 of the shooters ) and to me it looked like a good FT event with all the extras one might expect at a 2 day event. Displays, new ( & used ? ) things for sale, food ( we like food).

I think mrod is just one of the newer folks in airguns. Probably did not even realize that by deciding not to shoot he created more chaotic work for the MD. I've heard the MD was Tylor but believe he was there one way or another. Now he does know just friging ( pardon) everything about what PA handles - and more he just wont admit to I think- and having the chance to squad with him - or just a few minutes before/after- would provide a person with a ton of current airgun information. I have attend 2 day event with him in the past and he is a young consummate professional even on his own time.

I ( and I think all FT shooters) understand the venue issues , and, the Weather LOL.

Thanks for putting on a match! Hopefully y'all can find a venue that makes Roz's Hollow look amateur in comparison. It's a high bar but you'll can do it.

We need more FT venues. I support alll your efforts.

John

I personally thought that the 2018 PYA Cup was the best of the last four years I have attended. Tyler, Christin and crew did a great job organizing and running the event. Will definitely be there next year if all goes well. It seemed to me that the club that hosted it is becoming less airgun friendly. Maybe it is time to change venue location. Bill Day

I was there Saturday from the start until the end of the slinger comp. I went to check out how everything was set up comp wise and if everything works out for me next year i'll be entering the comp as it looks like a great time. I took advantage of the 20% sale and got a flash and bundle for a great price! Ruth was a great help in helping me make my choice as I was looking at 6 other guns, lol. the demo area was a bit crowded but everyone seemed to have a good time, that air force Texan .45 was a blast in more ways then one lol I was wearing a wanders landscaping gray hoodie, I should get some airgun nation shirts to wear next time so folks can id each other lol.

Despite all the feedback I hold true to my opinion on this event and this is why. I know this is geared towards the competition and not supposed to be filled with thousands of guns and vendors but..... Hear me out:

NO ORGANIZATION. (Not being rude)

I mean my wife even looked at me several times and knew I was disappointed just in the fact that it felt like no one knew anything about anything. I don't expect Matt and Ted to be walking around giving high fives but I did expect somewhat knowledgeable staff. The demo range was just a mess seriously I don't care what anyone says it was embarrassing in my eyes. That being said I TRULY APPRECIATE THE WORK AND EFFORT PUT INTO THIS EVENT BY ALL PYRAMYD AIR STAFF AND CONTRIBUTORS! Where else can you go check out products in person airgun related (at least in this area of the country) and shoot air guns, almost nowhere. So don't think I am bashing them for the event I just felt that even with the limited space, bad weather and everything else ORGANIZATION could of said a lot.

The food looked great and everyone shooting seemed to have a great time so I am thankful I could go but I will certainly not be attending again next year for shooting or leisure and that is just my personal decision. I also want to thank Pyramyd air staff for reaching back out in regards to this post and the reply left by Kristen, again Thank you! To everyone I am going to catch hell from, my opinion has no bearing on your ability to enjoy this or future events but I would of loved if someone told me about the events before I drove several hours or more to one. I hope everyone can enjoy next years event and Pyramyd dig into those pockets and get a better venue for the event you guys deserve it!

Thanks.
