Remarks:
After many weeks of work, we were finally able to shoot our third 25 lane field target course at Rockville Fish & Game.
This course will be used for our upcoming Grand Prix in August. We only shot 15 out of the available 25 lanes.
Since it was the July 4th weekend, I didn't think we would have a lot of people attending the match.
Anyways, we eventually ended up with 14 people shooting the course.
After a brief safety meeting, we had people assigned squads and lanes. The shooters went for a long walk from the registration area to the fire road course 200 yards away deep into the woods. For the Grand Prix, we will allow people to park next to the Upper Pond for a shorter walk to the fire road course.
While I was walking up and down the course checking every squad if they were ready, we had a premature single shot at a target. I had to call the only cold line of match since I had not called a hot line just yet. I gave a small brief warning to offending shooter and, in a few minutes, called a hot line and blew the whistle to commence shooting.
For the next 3 hours of shooting, we did not have a single cold line. Some people had encountered problems with the stretchy braided nylon mason line when resetting the targets. I will replace those stretchy strings with the braided Dacron kite line. Some lane markers were on the sloping edge of the asphalt fire road. Next time we will move the lane markers back a couple of inches so the shooter would be on the flat ground and not on the sloping edge.
We were happy to welcome the Tran family attend our match. Both father and son shoot in a squad while mother and younger brother watched.
Khoa Jr shot his first match at Mass Rifle Association last weekend. We were glad to see a family shoot our airgun match together at Rockville.
It was very hot and humid with almost no wind. The course was designed to have a lot of long-distance targets with full sized hit zones. We only had four 1" reducers in the entire course and four 1-3/8" hit zone targets. The difficulty of the course was increased because how sheltered the course was from wind. Though some lanes were under dense pines trees and can be very dark in clear sunny conditions, but the overcast conditions lessened the contrast from light to dark.
We had water and flavored drinks in coolers during the match and had lunch served at the air-conditioned clubhouse afterwards.
I think we had a very nice preview of the new fire road course. With a few minor changes, it will be ready for our Grand Prix in August.
Next match: 2024 August 2-4 Rockville Fish & Game Grand Prix
