22 or 25 cal

I have to retract my statement about the 25 RAW HM1000X I just received a used one that shoots 1/4" groups with commercially purchased tins of 25.39gr JSB Kings (that everyone else buys) at 75 yards from a competitive shooter who included several tins of these JSBs. I haven't tried my home made H and Hem 25.39gr swaged pellets through this one yet. It now equals my 25 FX Impact shooting home made swaged pellets at 75 yards.

I think I'm going to go with the 25 cal

...before you pull the trigger check out the difference in pellet and slug selection, especially with slugs...I only found two .25 cal slugs...

...note there is a difference in the .25 cal and the .257 cal...

...for normal close range pellet gun stuff with normal pellet gun ammo I can clearly see where my .25 has the advantage in power...

...like 16 vs 26 grain Polymags...not a very close comparison there...

...as I have a .25 TalonP/Escape, I don't even bother buying .22 cal Polymags for my 22's...

...over all it seems a bit like comparing a 45/70 to a .308...or a .308 to a 6.5 CR...

...maybe a better analogy is 9mm vs .45 ACP / .40 S&W...modern developments have change things quite a bit there...

...I am looking forward to experimenting with heavy .22's in the Cayden and if I had the coin to set up a modern dedicated long range slug shooter I would be looking at a 22 or maybe even a 17 considering recent developments…the Cayden might evolve into something like that but it works too well as is to mess with right now...I do not know if it is powerful enough to merit a slug barrel...I am sort of waiting for RM to do his slug review with a Cayden...

The only advice I can give ( from experience). There's nothing wrong with 22. Just never shoot a 25. You won't want to go back!

...but my .25 is going nowhere...!!!... .!. :D .!.

...FWIW the Spanish had it sorted out in 1893...

...threadjack off...

...I pretty much just shoot the JBS 33.95grn MKII's and the 26grn Polymags in my .25...the H&N Grizzly slugs did ok except for frequent fliers...

...FWIW those JSB Heavies are already getting to be a bit too akin to shooting a .22 LR for my situation...I dialed it back a bit without giving up good killing power with the Polymags...

...I was fortunate to find those two pellets did very well in my rifle and did not need to do exhaustive testing...

...it is not like I will ever shoot most of the .22's and .17's out there anyway, but the .22's can be heavier than the heaviest .25 cal pellets...

...this may not really matter at all to most people...they may not be useful in most guns...

...one (perhaps irrelevant) thing that I ponder is that there are no .25 cal rim fires today but they have sold all the .22 ammo they can make for a long time...

...now .17's have joined the market...

...the .20 (5mm Rem) was a dog...!!!... 😜

I may want to change over to 33.95 gr mk2 pellets in the future so that makes me think about the 25 more

...not to repeat self, but...these will fly better if your gun can push'em...a 25 will likely shoot 34 grn pellets faster...

...I plan to try some in the Cayden when I can find some...they are all sold out for some reason...

...just look at these stubby little things...and they are the heaviest 25 cal JSB's...

I've got a tin of jumbo beast, they are ok... but they won't fit in many magazines so you are going to be hand loading.... Also.. the advent of slugs and their superior ballistics also have kinda thrown a wrench into the decision making process.

I'd stick with the 25 gr in 22 cal anyway

They're quite impressive at 950 fps for a smidge over 50 ft lbs. Only 110 bar reg setting. Was dancing paint cans at 180 yards with them. Ground hogs go night night instantly with them.

I really like the 22 for its versatility. Shoots 14 grain crosman darn accurately at 20 ft lbs for the 25-30 yard squirrel raiding the bird feader. Or crank it up with the heavies to 50+ ft lbs. Mega ammo choices and 500 in a tin.

If i were in your shoes. Id have a 22 and a 30. Id skip the 25 all together.
