22 vs 25 for lower/ quieter setup

I shoot all my PCPs in my backyard. They are all about 85 db plus or minus 3 db. The quietest is my P35-177 or my Prod with a buck rail moderator on it. Prod only comes in 22 BTW. P35-177 is about 82db and I think the moderated Prod may be under 80. My Prod came with a tune that was under 15 fpe but I did not like the lack of immediate death on squirrels with body shots. I turned it up to about 18 fpe. My P35-177 is about 19 fpe. I have a hair curler mod in all 3 of my P35s. It is also possible to add a moderator with an adapter. The Stoeger Bullshark is very, very similar to the P35 except for the stock. It comes with the moderator adapter. P35s are regulated. I get about 100 shots on a fill of my 177. I get about 30 from a fill of my Prod (66cc versus 265cc and 3000 psi versus 250 bar).

My P35-25 likes H&N FTTs which are only 20 grains. My P35-22 likes H&N Baracuda Match which are a little over 21 grain. I turned the power down on the 25 to keep it to 870 fps. 22 is about 830 fps. So very similar power. Also very similar noise levels. The 22 penetrates further in wet paper and is more accurate. If I needed to kill a raccoon or possum I would prefer the 22, I think. Either should work as long as I place the shot well.

The buck rail moderator I have used on my Prod works and I thinks it improved the accuracy a little but it is fragile. I broke mine today. It's probably a good idea to use a moderator that isn't 3D printed unless you can be real careful with it or it fits inside the shroud like the one on my Avenger.

To me it makes a pretty big difference if I open a window and take a shot versus put out the pellet trap and shoot 50-100 shots. My neighbors would probably not notice a single shot even if they heard it. They would not if inside their house. If I shoot at my pellet trap they notice but what I am doing is legal and they don't care.

Yes I watched these it is good to hear that it appears I was on the right path... just seems a pain to change jets and hex tune the internal reg to get it to low power vs dials on guns like AEA but I understand the difference in mechanics (hammers vs no hammer etc) and why this is... as you point out, I like what I have but it's not what I need, so that's frustrating... tuning means it's a long way back (being dramatic I know) to return to where I am now... I would buy a spare back-end leshiy 2 and have a low power and high power set up - but that's like a $1600 option, which leads me towards a dedicated/ separate pistol if I'm putting that kind of cash into it.
I thought about the same and came to an identical conclusion --- I'd just get a second gun at that point.

My 25 caliber 350mm barreled L2 repr tuned down to 120 gauged regulator sporting a factory punk pushes 27.9g pellets 775fps through a five stack HUMA Mod 30 very quietly. With a four stack setup it's still quiet and it's so easy on the fly adjustments with a repr regulator and gauge. Instead of changing jets try installing a 5.5 puck to reduce airflow at the pellet. Most of my engagements are within 65 yards max. The slower speed does not seem to bother Raccoons at all. Anyway their not bitching about it much, as their doing their KC & company get down tonight dance moves.

Note the LOP on repr stocked L2 are a bit longer, than the standard non adjustable regulated.
I think I will try this... just change the puck, small dialing back on regulator and see where I am noise/ fps wise.. these 2 changes are easy to undo; I think I will also call edgun west and see what he advises. My fallback is the hp ss 22... I really was interested in a backpack sized platform vs a rifle

Prettypetty Brain from Edgun West has a you tube video for tuning a client's LOUD L2 repr into a 12fpe setup. But that is good about it he shows the different stages YOU can get off this detune bus. So anyone can figure out what they need as far as fps vs L2 barking and custom dial in their own tune so to speak.
For my L2 I've got another 450mm Alpha precision barrel with Shelest moderator and another Valkyrie hand guard.
Basically two different guns with a single Edgun L2 repr adjustable core.
I also have two Prods, but I got hooked on quick double tapping if needed.

I can't say I blame you here. I'm sort of in the same boat, although I have the REPR so reg changes at least will be less work to undo.

One other point in all this. My 22/250 Leshiy2 is only shooting around 28-29 FPE but I can already see this thing is much more stable than a 22/250 Classic Leshiy at the same power. From talking to others it sounds like they stay smooth into much higher power levels. In that regard it almost seems a shame to tune this thing down.

So I can see the point of a second Leshiy2. One at moderate power levels where maybe backyard friendly isn't absolutely necessary and then another for basement plinking and backyard pesting, assuming not much more than a squirrel needs dispatching.

But I guess I don't know if you have place to use your current Leshiy2. You say you like it but do you have a place to use it? I have a million acres of public land nearby so I don't mind a somewhat loud Leshiy2.

Before I decide what to do with mine I'm setting up a P-rod for pest duty. I'll have access to a fairly quick second shot and since I'm leaving it unregulated I won't have to worry about regulator creep.

Now the wheels are spinning. Forgive my ignorance but now I'm wondering how many shots per fill I might get out of a prod in 177 or 22 tuned for 15ftlbs.. I was searching compact/ backpack 177 PCPs and there aren't many - so for 177 the prod might be it but the air cylinder isn't big (when compared to AEA HP SS which can be had with 300cc cylinder).

I feel like it's between the 177 prod and the aea hp ss in 22 at this point... then tune
If you are "pesting" in your backyard, how many shots do you really NEED before refilling?

See my sig below... I can probably shoot at least 60 shots at my tune with the .177 Fortitude before I HAVE to refill with a hand pump, but I usually refill when the pressure hits about 2500psi. That means about 30 shots +/- and only takes me about 30 pumps and 3 minutes or less including getting the pump out of the closet, connecting it and putting it back up when I am done.

This keeps the hand pump from heating up very much and keeps me from breaking a sweat!

Of course, I don't shoot a lot because my airgun(s) are simply tools to eliminate pests. So YMMV depending on how much you shoot for other reasons. (smile)

BTW, yes I do recommend .177 for backyard pesting for many reasons that I won't repeat here and now. (grin)
