30-Yard Challenge

Thanks for the info! But the card was 193, I initially forgot to subtract the -2 from group 4 …I think I will try to adjust the trigger, it is way too sensitive.

There might even be a YouTube out for RW trigger adjustment. Not sure, but might be worth checking.

I did have some occasions when the gun would fire and I was not 100% ready. Not good for scoring and really bad for any hunting, so good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Glad to see some of you are getting some lead downrange…

I was away on vacation for a week. Since returning I’ve been raking leaves - body is sore, lol.

Got in two cards with the Crown to reward myself for the hard work with the leaves.

47-Masters: 189 11X
40-Masters: 192 10X

On the 47 yard card, I had Xs on 8 of my 1st 9 shots… probably 9 of 10 is you count my one sighter at the white dot on cardboard left of row #1. Then wind kicked up and it got tougher.

I’m getting pretty good with the Crown at these 40+ yard distances with just 18.13g pellets. I’ll have to try 30 yards again with the Crown… it should seem “easy” now - after all the longer distance cards.

I’ll try to get a leaderboard update done this week. Keep shooting, the year is not over!

(I’m getting used to the colder weather - it was 47 degrees when I shot these cards - it seemed colder.)

My only card today…

Leaderboard submission - Weihrauch HW110.

It doesn’t beat my 198 30-Masters score with the HW110, but it beats my 30-Challenge score of 196. So, I’ll submit it for the 30-Challenge:

30-Challenge: 197 15X (!)
Rifle: Weihrauch HW110 .22
Pellet: JSB 15.89g @ 712fps
Scope: Arken EPL-4 6x24 FFP @ 24x

Wind conditions were mild. I then did some plinking at 40 yards with the HW110. It did really well. It took what seemed a long time for the little 15.89g to hit the target at 40 yards when traveling only 710fps. The rifle is so quiet with this mild tune - fun to shoot.

That 110 is shooting great at 18 FPE. That’s almost 100 FPS less than my HW100 .22 that you set up for me. Looks like slower is better for these German Weihrauch air rifles, at least for 30Y Challenge accuracy. As many have observed and commented on, faster doesn’t always translate to better accuracy.

Nice cards Ed.

Incredible shooting Ricky!

Did you do any customization of your GCMAG? Is it regulated? If yes, Factory reg or Huma?

Perhaps sometime you can post a video of your hold and trigger pull?

Also, what happened with the 8 on the 198 40-Masters card… it must have been a bad pellet…?

Thanks Tommy.

My HW110 came with a 600mm barrel. I swapped in the 410mm and a UK spec hammer spring shuttle. Dropped the reg pressure from 150 to 90bar.

Now its the ultimate backyard rifle - quieter than my .177s ! Super accurate too.

Hi and thanks Ed.

My GCMAG has a stock regulator which has a different design from all other regs but functions the same.

My hold is very simple… I just place my rifles on top of the front and rear bag, pinch the rear bag so that the butt will not move and then I slowly pull the trigger. I don’t shoulder my rifles since the recoil is very minimal.

The 8 was caused by a pellet with a bent skirt since the pellets I used are my “rejects”.

Thanks Ricky…

But you are a successful competition shooter, so I’m hoping that you will let us “dig deeper” into your shooting technique…

On many of my rifles, I’m putting pressure on the trigger from the 2 o’clock position with my index finger - with counter pressure from my thumb from the 8o’clock position. This offsetting pressures keeps the crosshairs from moving - both horizontally and vertically.

How do you feel regarding trigger pressure - what is your technique - hoping that you will share some insights.

I agree that with PCP “recoilless” rifles - definitely try to minimize touch/pressure points on the rifle… I only touch the triger when shooting - nothing else.

You’re very much welcome Ed.

My triggers are light. Only 2 ounces to 3 oz. depending on what rifle I use. I have severe CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) and I can’t feel my trigger finger. It is only my muscle memory that makes me shoot well but sometimes I do encounter the dreaded “misfires” during competitions causing my scores to go low. 🤣

Regular practice on a daily basis is essentia. If you fail to meet your goal (high score), rinse and repeat. Also try different holds until you discover what’s perfect for your particular rifle because not all rifles have the same hold.

All my practice videos are found here… https://m.facebook.com/groups/254960076057457/?ref=share

I also video record all my practice sessions which adds “pressure”, that’s why I never post pictures of scorecards without any video backup.

Shot some 30 and 40y cards today. Very light wind and range was not crowded.

I shot four 40Y Challenge cards and best I could do was a 191.

Shot three or four 30Y cards and will submit one Masters for leaderboard. I missed quite a few 10 rings with some misreads on slight wind.

Leaderboard submission for November

FX Royale 400 .22
Leupold EFR 6.5 X 20X 40 AO 2FP
30Y Masters
JSB 18.1 at 873 FPS
198-11X

Try shooting the 18’s at around 890 to 940fps

I can try it, but I’m curious as to why you think 890-920 FPS increase in velocity, may be more accurate? Do you have any insight here? The Royale has a Smooth Twist barrel, and has a reputation for great accuracy. Would that be too fast?

As an example, I switched to the 20.83 JSB lights and with my same tune, the velocity is in the 815-830 range depending on outside temp. Very accurate at that velocity.

Tom,

As far as I can remember (12 years ago) I played around with different speeds and different reg settings on the Royale. The best groups I could get at
70 yards using 2011 JSB 18.13gr unsorted pellets was between 890-935fps.

Here’s an old video…

Just watched your video. Three solid groups at 70 yards!!

Q. Do you think or feel that I would benefit from increasing my velocity to 890-920 range, for 30Y only target shooting? Same question for 50Y shooting? I think you made a pretty good case for 70y groups in that video, so not questioning your results there.

I’m asking only because I “think” the increased velocity might not provide any better accuracy than I’m already getting.

It’s easy for me to play with the HS only, and test out the accuracy, but I don’t really want to mess with the Huma reg right now at 150 FPS.

Thoughts?

Tom,

Just try to increase your velocity (890fps minimum) and see the results. I always tell my teammates and friends to try different speeds and settings until they get very good results. It is a meticulous process, takes a lot of patience, lots of pellets and at the end is SUCCESS! This applies to one single pellet tin (batch and brand) since not all pellets are the same and come from the same mold.

Do not touch your regulator and just fine tune your HS tension.

Hi Ricky

Ok, turned up HS today on Royale. I accidentally forgot my JSB 18.13 pellets, but I did bring the JSB 20.83g “lights.”

Shot a 196-14X 30 Y Challenge card at 848 FPS. Pretty sure the 18.1 g will get to 890-900 FPS at this tune. Edit - I inadvertently wrote the RAW on the card, but it actually was the FX Royale .22. Excuse the typo.

Shot a 40y Challenge card with the RAW HM1000x .22 today.

New Leaderboard update for this rifle. 196-13X with JTS 25.39g. I really want a 200 with this gun, and she deserves a better score. ‘She’ needs to tell the shooter/owner to slow down and read the wind. 😊

Awesome shoot’ TommyB !

It had some fun shooting my PowerPup today, but didn’t shoot any cards. It was shooting great at 40 yards, but wind was crazy and shifting.
