30-Yard Challenge

Last day at the range before Thanksgiving. Went at 2pm vs. early morning. Just wanted to see if the wind died down. It did, and it was perfect for shooting the 30y Targets.

I had the HW100 .22 carbine, which I recently tweaked to increase velocity from 805 to 825-830 FPS. I was shooting the FX Atomic 15.89 pellets, very slightly lubed.

I noticed something that helped me today. I re-zero’d in between targets to get a very precise X or 10 ring hit, two or three times, and then felt confident enough to go right at the 10 ring with no holds.

I will submit two targets for December leaderboards:

200-18X 30Y Challenge - This is the first 200 score for this rifle. Thanks Ed for the fix!

198-11X 30Y Masters

“Our” HW100 is amazing with those FX Atomics that we discovered that it likes so much. We actually both have “our” same HW100 on this year’s 30-Challenge leaderboard – I shot a 198 16X with your rifle using 18.13g back in late February. I wish I could have had more time with it using the FX Atomics.

I see that you tweaked the tune – slightly increasing the fps. That extra speed with the 15.89g Atomics may get you improved results at 40 yards – try it on the next low wind day.

That Weihrauch would make an incredible hunting rifle as well – it shoots 200 18X with hollow point ammo – amazing !

I’ve got a .25 Crown barrel today coming from NAProf – I’m excited to see what my Crown will do at 50 yards with the .25 25.4g pellets.

Confession - wind was almost zero at both muzzle and at 30 y. But, the increase in velocity from 800 - 805 to 830 FPS was the ticket. I will try at 40y next outing. I discovered how important it is to check and double check your zero as we shoot these cards. Here is an example:

I have been using my initial zero and pretty much then adjusting for holds from first card. Yesterday, I decided to re-zero until I hit two X’s or close to two X’s in a row on a sighter card. Then, I went back to shooting more cards. My thought is if I can hold on 10 ring ( vs. holding on 9, or 8 ring) using the clock as my holds, much better accuracy. I think I got more X’s because of this and in significant wind, it doesn’t matter that much because the holds and knowing the hour value on the clock are more difficult. Simply stated, the farther out your holds are from the ‘X’ dot, the harder to hit 10’s and more X’s.

Ah Ha!! Greg sold you his .25 caliber ‘lottery winning barrel.’

Shoot some targets and post up when you can.

I got several tins of JTS Dead Center .22 18.8 gr pellets from the JTS booth at the Pyramid Air Cup. They look like really nice pellets! They appear to be very consistent in shape, almost no bent skirts, and very clean. I ran a bunch through my .22 PelletgageR's and the batches seemed to be a mix of head sizes between 5.54 and 5.51mm. Only weighed about 30 pellets and the range was similar to the JSB's (not as tightly grouped as the FX's). Anyway, after almost 750 shots on lots of Challenge cards at both 30 and 40 yds I can emphatically say "Blaaaaaa...". Not one card came close to my leader board numbers at either range. Tried several different velocities in each barrel - just not scoring as well as the FX's.

So, today I went back to the good ole Green Mountain Crown with the 500mm .177 barrel (my FT rig). Shot just two cards, one 30 yd Masters and a 40 yd Challenge. Shot the 30 yd first and did well - 198-12x (with six 10's). The breeze picked up a bit (though not much) and I shot the 40 yd card - 191 - 8x. I think both make my leader board for this rifle for 2024.

30 Yard No Looking through the scope while standing on video challenge using my made GCMAG Magnum Gen 2 w/ GF1000 barrel, JMS-Pro 18.3gr unsorted @970fps average, Protektor Model Deluxe BB rear bag as front rest and Protektor rabbit ear rear bag.

You can’t see me re-aiming because the movements are so minute. I love making trick shots and I cannot reveal how I do it or else my “magic super power” will get lost.

So I have shot dozens of cards with my new to me Redwolf HP .22. Unable to break 192...it's has been very windy and I've tested a bunch of different pellets and slugs. It's hard to make judgements with the high wind, I'll just keep chugging along. At least I'm used to the trigger.
My AA S510 still performs relatively well in the wind. At least well enough for me to take the time to score a card ;-).

Wind almost always gets to me. I had a decent target going yesterday and then messed up a wind hold and got a 5 or 6. More typically it seems to give me 9s or 8s. Can be frustrating. Swirling around changing direction is the worst for me.

Doing some leaderboard updates today Greg…

Unfortunately, neither of these submissions topped previous submissions with your GM Crown .177 (500mm).

30-Masters of 198 13X submitted March 3rd has more Xs.

40-Challenge of 197 12X submitted May 25th is the 2nd highest .177:40-Challenge card ever submitted (mreynolds has a 199 15X 40-Challenge with his Thomas .177 - and a 200 16X 40-Masters).

The year is young, keep shootin’ for that 200 !!

JimD shot some nice cards getting his new Athlon 10-40 target scope dialed in.

RCope shot a nice card with his .177 Air Arms S510 – and continues to work with his Daystate Red Wolf HP .22

And our competition shooter from the Philippines – Ricky the Airgunnero – shot a 30-Masters of 197 12X… while standing and not looking through the scope (Post 2828 with video)!! Ricky had already submitted perfect 200 20X cards in both .177 and .22 with his customized GCMAG Magnum Gen2 rifle (made in the Philippines) – so the 197 doesn’t make the leaderboard… as “degree of difficulty” is not part of our scoring process, lol.


I want one of those GCMAG Magnums – tuned by Ricky – for Christmas !

Still almost a whole month to get a new rifle on the leaderboards, or improve a previous score – so keep getting’ that lead downrange !

Rick - great cards.

You are right in the ‘sweet spot’ of 970 FPS with the 25g pellet, and the RW. Assume you are on medium power?

My Safari .22 HP shot very well af both 50 and 100 yards with 1) Good quality JSB 25.4 MRD, and 2) light wind especially at 100y.

I would stick with FX branded or JTS - Better for me anyway

So what has Ed been up to…? Well, we had 14 people over yesterday for annual Christmas Chili (Texas chili - no beans) party. So I had to clean up my “Airgun Room” - 2nd living room over the garage. It took me hours to clean it up. I’m not saying I had more airgun parts and ammo and tools laying around than Ricky the Airgunnero’s garage… but I think there was.

Anyway, today it warmed up to 42 degrees, I had a bit of a hangover, figured I’d try these new JTS 22.07g pellets in the Crown Mk 2 with 700mm barrel. Fresh cold air felt good.

Check out these results - very breezy (note wind flags- at 40 and then 47 yards. I’m gonna get these JTS working on 40-Masters on the next nice day.

NAProf, you thought the JSB 18s were better than the JTS 18s in your Crowns. I’ve got a bunch of JTS 22g and JSB 20.83g - so I’ll do a comparison shoot off and let you know which pellet wins.
