30-Yard Challenge

Does this advice apply to other rifle/barrel combinations? Say a new Wolverine R? I believe it has a Lothar Walther barrel. My week old Wolverine shoots 18s really well at 23 yards indoors, but it came from Daystate shooting them at 833 FPS. I was thinking about increasing it to 890 ish
It applies to every modern PCP. I always shoot 18s at an average of 940fps and max it out to 990fps depending on the day (weather, altitude, humidity, etc) using my FX Impact, Crown, Wildcat, Panthera, Maverick, Brocock Sniper HR, DSRW HP and GCMAG Magnum Gen2 diring competitions.

890fps is a good starting point and it all depends on you on how you shoot and tune your rifle. I have no permanent tune on all my rifles since everyday has its own unique condition. If you tune your rifle ang get good results today (for example), you might experience a different result the next day since the “atmosphere“ is not exactly the same as the day before.

Whenever I compete, I always tune on site in order for my regulator or the whole rifle to “acclimatize“ right before the tournament starts.

Beautiful weather today.

RAW TM1000X .177
FX 13.4g
Sightron ED 45x 2FP

Leaderboard for February:
30 Y Challenge: 198-13X
30 Y Masters: 193-10X
40 Y Challenge: 193-10X

The 40Y Challenge with a .177 in ‘any’ wind is hard for me! Had 2 flags out and wind was light. Bought a new bench stool for the New Year.

Great shooting today Tommy.

I’m still hand pumping, so one Masters card per rifle. I got in 3 30-Masters cards after shoveling snow today. 40 degrees Fahrenheit, mild to medium breezes.

DS Huntsman Regal shot 188 9X. Had four 8s that lowered score - vertical shifts. 15.89g at 790fps. Happy with 9X.

Shot a 186 5X with Weihrauch HW110 - 15.89g at 640fps. Cold temps dropped velocity of my 700fps tune too low. Still a solid score at 30-Masters with some wind at only 640fps.

Submitting a 196 12X 30-Masters with .177 FX Dreamline Classic. Shot 10.3g at 898-902fps. Rifle is insanely accurate - hit many Xs dead on the dot. Wind gust surprised me resulting in an 8 - or I might have scored even higher. Glad I didn’t shoot 198+ in a way, 196 gives me room to improve my score later in 2025.

Hi Guys,
I haven't had much chance lately to "put lead downrange" as Ed likes to say. Yesterday was reasonably warm but with a gusty light wind of less than 5mph. Unfortunately, it was from the North which put it L-to-R on my backyard range. I decided not to try 40 yds as that kind of breeze makes high scores nearly impossible. Thus my 30yd Challange card at 195-9x (but with seven 10's). My best this Spring so far (except for my earlier mulligan card;) ).

I think I was seeing some spin-drift as I was about 1/8 high on average and you can tell I was in a constant battle with gusts to get the windage right. All in all I am not unhappy with this card and I at least now have one for the leader board.
Cheers,
Greg

I did get some lead downrange today - despite it being breezy and 31 degrees..

I shot my new-to-me Wildcat Mk2 .30 caliber. I had taken it apart and found a leaking 0-ring. I also replaced the hammer spring adjuster nut as it was a bit stripped and glued in. For the new hammer spring adjuster, I used a brass jam plate from Cape Fear Airguns - rather than glue - to keep the adjuster from shifting, lol. The "Big Cat" shot great - I got four 5-shot groups that were under 1/2 inch edge-to-edge at 45 yards! I can't wait to try the Big Cat at 100 yards this spring.

I also tested out another hammer spring in my Daystate Huntsman Regal .22. I currently have no regulator installed. The factory hammer spring gave a nice flat shot string of about 30 shots - I had adjusted the length of hammer throw down slightly to reduce velocity from the factory 885fps to about 855 fps. The factory hammer spring has a wire thickness of 1.76mm and a length of 56mm (58.5mm with delrin spring cap).

I sourced a bunch of 18mm diameter springs from AliExpress - in different lengths and wire thicknesses. You guys saw I had nice 30-Masters results with the 1st AliExpress spring I tried. Its about 60mm and has a wire thickness of 1.6mm. It reduced power to a max of 810fps and gave a shot string of 50 shots with a 40fps spread.

Today I tried my second AliExpress hammer spring in the Regal. This spring is the same 60mm length (about factory length) but has a thinner wire diameter of 1.5mm. This spring had velocity peak at about 745fps (it may go higher on a warmer day - it was 31F). But I was stoked with the shot string...I got 65 shots with a 20fps spread - from the Regal's tiny airtube with 15.89 .22 caliber pellets !! And that's starting from only 210bar fill pressure.

I shot a 30-Challenge card in the middle of the shot string - it was a 194 9X - pretty darn good on a cold and windy day.

The best thing is that I think peak velocity was about in the 150 bar range. So if I decide to put a regulator back in this Huntsman, I can keep this spring and probably set the reg for 145-150 bar. That's much better than the 165-170bar that Daystate sets their regs at to achieve 29 ft/lbs with .22 caliber. I really like the lighter spring: cocking is much easier, accuracy is still very good at 735fps range (with 15.89g) and the rifle is quieter and shot count is more than double of the factory tune.

If you have an unregged Huntsman and want to tune it down and increase shot count, let me know and I'll show you what spring I'm using - I think its like $3.00 for 5 springs, lol. It is removing the two rearmost breech bolts (3/32" allen) and two grub screws (1.5mm allen) - takes less than 5 minutes to swap springs and its completely reversible - no other adjustments required.

“My best this Spring so far…”

Spring in February in Delaware? Teasing you, but I think it’s coming early here ( NC) too in February.

So I counted 16 10’s and X’s which is excellent with a zero to 5 mph wind. Especially with .177.

Beautiful low wind day in South Florida. But the wind did pick up a bit to ruin the initial carnage. My first card was my best so far at the 30 yd masters. That was with my .22 Redwolf. I'm disappointed in my AA S510...haven't been able to best or even match my score on the 30 yd challenge from last year. Tried some new pellets (JTS, AEA) in both lighter and heavier weights than the 10.4-10.5gr pellets that the rifle seems to like. And tried differing velocities. The only promising one was the AEA 13.7 gr @874. Shot a card but only managed a 192 10X, which is not quite good enough. I'm thinking about purchasing a .22 Ghost as my next rifle... Cheers!

Nice shooting!

Think hard before going with the Ghost. I think a key ingredient of a successful benchrest rifle for precision target shooting is a light, consistent trigger…

… I looked into a Ghost, as I like bullpups. I’ve read many reports from very experienced shooters that the stock trigger is heavy and you cannot adjust it into an acceptable range without significant modification. In short, its nothing like your Redwolf trigger.

You may want to do some investigation into the Ghost’s trigger…

I come from a family of engineers Greg, so I can’t help but “Excel” at spreadsheets, lol.

My BS was Accounting and my MBA was Information Systems Management… heck, I actually implemented the first electronic spreadsheets at an insurance company, back when it was Lotus 123 for DOS. Got rid of the green ledger paper they used, lol.
