30-Yard Challenge

.22 Daystate Wolverine HP-R shootin' the JSB re-designed 25.39 @ 875. Improvement... ever so slight, over the previous 193 card, doing 194 w/11X and more XXs (10). Yessss.

Mike, it sounds like I have a lot more practicing before I get anywhere even close to your status.

Guys, I'm glad we are still doing what we can to improve on what we are doing! 👍

Well I went back to my uragan compact 22 to see what I can do and if I could bring the score up. My groups were getting larger so I had to tighten things up. I cleaned the barrel as well as I could and put a larger scope on it as the imersive's dot was covering the center x by a bit. Because the uragan was a little more consistent at the higher bottle fills I refilled before the gauge got to where I normally would get a flier. I still got a couple but its hard to read the wind in the backyard. I finally did better with the uragan compact bettering my old score of 195. Tom, if you could update my uragan compact .22 I got a 197 with 6XX and a total of 11Xs. Hopefully I can still do better with it as it takes a slightly different hold with such a light air gun.

I want to drag a springer out and see how that works out!

Hi Allen….here is a link to the wind flags I prefer for 50y.

Wind flags are at the top of the importance list for BR. I’m pretty sure the ones I use are the small version . I remove the double tails and just use one. For me, the double tails are distracting. The propellers are not worth getting. The guy that makes these name is Ray Hill. He also makes an adjustable ball swivel top that I would recommend. It allows you to get the flag pivot level no matter what the terrain your tripod is sitting on. You will also need a basic tripod with a 1/4-20 thread.

You cannot make the necessary correction for wind that you cannot see. Flags are the only way to see the wind.

Those look to be the same design as I used years ago in centerfire BR. And I agree about the propeller, no need for it. It's not going to tell you anything the tail doesn't, no need trying to make 2 interpretations. I got really good at knowing what the wind was doing, but not so good at how to shoot through it! I used them mostly to try and pick a relative calm during the time limit. If someone told me that I did a good job shooting in that wind, I would correct them, usually I had done a good job of avoiding it. I'm in awe of the shooters who can consistently and accurately hold off for wind drift, and flags are the way to do it. Once I'm recovered from shoulder surgery, I'm looking forward to giving this another try.

Thanks guys,

I really, really like that little uragan. It's not high power but it is very accurate. I'm just not at the level the airgun is capable of. Well for that matter I'm not at level of what any of my airguns are capable of.

Mike I have to take your advice about the wind flags so I have some way of being able to read the wind speed and direction. Thanks

I took a couple of pics outside my garage just now. A colleague here on AGN sent these to me last year and I have been using them ever since. I had Ray make me the swivel that rotates the flag. I get a lot of kidding and joking from the local .22 Rimfire guys who see me deploy these at my local outdoor range, but they do ask questions and they are always interested in talking about them. :)

Grabbed a few minutes today to shoot my 2 Avenger 22’s which I think are the first ones to participate here. The first one is my original one which I made my own Walnut stock for, polished the barrel and lightened the trigger considerably. It’s a pretty darn good shooter, especially for a $300 rifle. This target was shot with unsorted JSB 18s straight from the tin.

A week ago I picked up another used Avenger 22 just to see if my first one was just a flash in the pan lucky winner of the barrel lottery. Well, I am pleased with Avenger #2 in bone stock configuration. The original owner said he only shot less than 100 through it. Since he had tuned it down, I tuned it back up to shoot 18s at 905. The trigger is still stock with only a 92.87# pull so it desperately needs some love in the near future. I think with a trigger job and some bore polishing I can get this one shooting better too.
