30-Yard Challenge

Went out to the local outdoor range today, perfect weather. 70 degrees and absolutely no wind. Got there at 8:30am

I brought the new "we the Plinkers" Revere .22 with Athlon 4-14-40MM FFP scope. Shot three 30 yard challenge cards and one N50 card at 50 yards. Very pleased with both the JSB 15.89 and 18.1 pellets. Both pellet weights are very accurate, but I have to give a slight edge to the 15.89 which is flying at 880 FPS on the FX Radar chrono.

Athlon Scope - very good, considering it is included in the package, but I need a bit more magnification at 30 yards for the challenge. The FFP MOA reticle covers up the 10 ring at 30 yards, on 14X magnification. So, my holds are a bit tricky for me because I was aiming constantly at the 10 ring, with various holds on the ring line ( i.e.,12'clock, 9, 7, 4, etc ) adjusting for the slightest of winds. Maybe 1/2 MPH or less. The scope is great for backyard squirrels, but for target shooting the FFP reticle is larger than I want/need.

Shot a 192-8X, 196-9X and 196-13X for the Senior's class nomination. Also shot an N50 card at 50 yards with the 15.89's and I was really pleased with the accuracy and scoring. I was zipping through the N50 card at a very fast pace as I was in a hurry and a bit late for doing some other errands. If I slowed down, I really think I could have shot a 240 card. Today was the day to try because of no wind.

Here are the cards:

I need to add that the N50 cards are scored with a .035" scoring plug, but the 30 yard challenge cards are scored with the .224" scoring plug.

really nice gun i really wonder why at 30 yards need so much scope that at 14x sure will cover the 10x what other scope at high power wont cover the 10 ring

Can you reread your sentence and rephrase it? I honestly did not understand your question.

My eyes do need a bit more magnification at 30-50 yards for bench rest target shooting vs. the 14x Athlon. Also, the FFP reticle is too thick as I previously mentioned.

ThomasT and I were discussing via PM, and I think I may consider an SFP scope with a 25-40 max magnification range and a thin reticle. Maybe that helps clarify.

I need to start this again. Seems like such a long time. I've been messing with a .177 Barrel in the impact and it does not shoot anything like the .22 does, maybe because it is more sensitive to the wind. I am also having issues with a BSA ULTRA CLX in .177 doing good beyond 25 yards. Boy im not having much luck with the 177 calibers.

I'd thought I'd play along...and I thought I'd do ok shooting NRA marksmanship style - prone no sand bagging. All you experienced bench rest shooters are sitting there laughing. I guess I still have that shooting instructor yelling "No sandbagging" in my head when I target shoot.
I've always managed to get a good zero with a crude rest and called it good and gone hunting; so I don't have much target experience with a stationary gun. I definitely have some things to work out.
I got to the 4th bullseye and stopped. The results were horrendous.
I'll be back with sand bags and a table.
And maybe a scope with a much higher magnification so I can actually see the target. LOL

Nothing wrong with a 45x scope!

Tommy, I am using a March High Master 48x scope with 3/32 moa dot and fine cross hairs. I haven't done 30 yard because I don't have a range with permission for that distance so I just shoot 25 yard with my RAW HM1000x. I plan to shoot 25 yard indoors this winter. 48x is not overkill when you are "shooting" for exact center. Aim small, miss small. A small advantage to the March High Master scopes is they use two "super ED" lenses, similar to Fluorite lenses. This allows them to deal with mirage better.

Hello Ross @rsfrid

I quoted your saying to @tommyb just yesterday :p ..... aim small and miss small

OR

how about aim small and hit dead center (y)(y)(y)

Wind does make it very challenging to score well with a .177. My FX Crown in .177 is really doing well, but the winds need to be 1-3mph before I can score above 195.
tcarlson777,
Got a question about your Crown setup. Which pellets and how fast? My Brocock Sniper XR is limited to about 20 fpe. That is fine for HFT. I shoot the JSB RDM (13.4 gr) at 825 fps and it does great out to 55 yds on HFT size targets. But trying for the 10 dot on your 30 yds target is difficult. The RDM's really want to be shot faster. My FX Maverick shoots the .22 RDMs at 910 fps and is shooting MOA at 100 yds.
I have tried all of the 10.3 gr diabolo pellets in the Brocock but can't crack 190 with about 6x. Too many flyers. But those shoot in the 900's. Maybe I need to weigh and sort those and try again.
I am not complaining, because the challenge of getting things to work is half the fun of doing this! Keeps me thinking and tinkering.
Cheers,
Greg

Just checked out that March scope. Very nice but I would have to wait for a fire sale. I can see why you like it.

Hi Guys,
My best card yet! Even though today was cloudy and windy (6 mph with gust to 15mph) things worked. Maybe it was because the wind was at 350 relative so shooting into it. This was the Maverick shooting the 25 grain JSB RDM's at 910 fps. That is the sweet spot

with this rifle as the SD is1.5 and ES 7. Scored with a .22 aluminum scoring pin - which seems to be generous. But I will take it.
Cheers,
Greg
P.S. - tcarlson777 thanks for the info on the .177 Crown.

Thanks!

seems as you really turnup the power things get jumpy lol everones eyes are sure different 10-14x is plenty for me at 50 yards 30 and in i use 6-8 power arken scopes have nice small center dot works for my eyes

The reticle always moves the same ( for me) whether or not I have it a 8 power or 50 power. It’s just that at the higher magnifications, it magnifies the reticle movement and makes it appear like it shakes more.

14 power for precise paper target shooting and scoring ( 30-50 and beyond); is just not enough to optimize higher scoring opportunities. You won’t see any competitive Benchrest folks using 14 power at N5O or other 50 yard competitions. It would be fine for hunting and plinking, but I need the higher magnification for more precise elevation and windage holds.

Actually, 6-8 power for squirrels is adequate, but I normally set between 9-10 magnification for that.

Greg,

193 is a good, solid card. Candidly, as I reflect back since shooting these 30 yard challenge cards since March 2022, I have difficulty scoring anything higher than low to mid 190’s in any wind greater than 3 mph. I use flags and shoot with clean barrels, but the wind gets me on a few shots every time. It is so easy ( for me anyway) to get three or four 9’s and an one or two 8’s with wind.

So, if you shot this in 6 mph wind, that is really blowing hard in my mind. Gusting to 15 mph, I would be going home.

You are definitely doing well with that 193 and reading the wind. Keep at it!

Tom
