30-Yard Challenge

1st TYC card of the day, and 1st with Sightron SIII ED 36X on Prophet Performance .22 LR.

I’m happy with 195 14X, but this card felt higher… I didn’t shoot as well on the last 2 rows.

Love this scope, incredible detail!

I think I was doing this springer class last fall. As I recall that is seperate from PCP class. I think I did about the same.

I shot 3 targets today. Springer Class
  1. 30-yards - bench
  2. Front and rear bag
  3. TX200 MKIII .177 with 3mm spacer
  4. Vortex Diamondback 6-24x50mm
  5. AA Field Heavy 10.3 (4.52mm) sorted to 10.4 grains with wax lube
  6. Wind 5 to 10 mph largely 6 o'clock
  7. 93°F and it was HUMID
  8. These were scored best edge touching using ARA .22 plug (pic)
I held up for the for the first 2 targets and then my concentration failed. I am out of practice on 1 per bull targets. I did shoot a 50-foot version this winter. However I have since gone to a 10-shot 50-yards shooting style for the last couple months. I am not sure it helped.

Target 1: 184 (6x)
Target 2: 189 (7x)
Target 3: 174 (2x)

I got some fresh targets printed yesterday and was trying to figure out my interaction with my new Ghost 22 hp shooting 26g pellets. Not much luck still a work in progress, 192 max. So I had to shoot my M3 22 to boost my ego a bit. It still shooting better than me. A couple of 197"s a 198 and a 199 made my day.

Here are my results. I shot the first target a few times to figure out where I needed to aim. I was using heavier pellets that I almost never use to help with the wind. Definitely can do a lot better on a calm day. And I know everyone is using .177 or .22 but my .177 isn’t here yet, so I used my .25 cal Wildcat MK3. Dreamline .177 will be here tomorrow. So once I get it all set up and shooting how I like I’ll be posting new results. This was a lot of fun. Great challenge for when I want to shoot but don’t have a ton of time to do so.

Finally got a shooting bench. So far haven’t seen an improvement over using the shooting stick.
Maybe I need to look at sorting pellets next.

Wolverine R is a great rifle and you are using what I think is a great pellet.

187 is a solid score, this challenge is tough - especially with your max magnification of 16X. What is your trigger pull weight?

Keep at it, try to minimize pressure / forces that you are applying to the rifle. I’ve found that a lighter trigger weight (8 ounces or less) and a light hold helps. You are tryingnto hit a .02” bullseye at 30 yards. When you start shooting that Wolverine in the 190s consistently, you will notice that the 30 Yard Challenge has improved a number of things with your shooting.

I agree with what Ed said but will add that I've found I need to line the gun up to have the POI on the bullseye without me pushing on the rifle. My best is a couple 199s one with a bipod and monopod and another with a Caldwell BR front rest and a rabbit ear bag in back. The Caldwell is easier to get lined up well but doesn't seem to improve my scores. I also find I have to try and keep my non-trigger hand (right for me) off my lightweight bench or it can affect things slightly too. I figured that out after shooting my latest 199 unfortunately.

I've shot lots of targets 195 or better with my best rifle, a P35 in 22, but that is this year. I've gotten better, last year my scores were significantly lower. Even this year, I have lots of the targets in the 180s and a few even lower. As Ed said, this isn't easy.

I used a 16X max scope on my 177 last year and the best target I shot with it was a 184, 6X. I moved an Athlon Talos 6-24 onto it this year and it's best is a 194. Not all that is attributable to the scope but I think it helped. My P35-22 wore that scope last year and I shot a 194 with it. I don't think the 8-32 Vector it currently wears contributed much if anything to it's 199s this year. The glass in the Athlon is more clear and I see the target fine with it. But I think going up to 24X helped. Being more careful with the 16X might achieve equivalent results but would be harder.

Does the gun shoot best at a certain fill presure? Try shooting groups of five from full to where you see them shoot horrible and keep track of each group and what psi each group was at. Then find out which groups are the smallest, note the presure and psi window at which those groups are best. Then shoot a challenge only in the psi window where it shoots best at and see if the score gets better.

Perfect shooting conditions tonight.

I put a modest Athlon Argos Gen 1 on the Reximex Daystar and shot a 195 13X on the 30 Yard Challenge card I shot.

Then I wondered, what type of grouping would I get at 45 yards with little .177 10.3g pellets. So I shot this 10-shot group. Only group I shot (I’d rather shoot targets).

Damn, I’ve got this Reximex (essentially a .177 Cayden) shooting so damn accurately.

I’m happy with 10 shots under a dime at 45 yards with an inexpensive scope and $15 UTG rings, lol.

Shot this in dim light with the Argos Gen 1 @24X on the Reximex Daystar. It sure was tougher to know where you were shooting vs. using a Sightron 36X target scope.

I’ll take 195 14X in dim light with my unregulated .177 laser - love this rifle! Bought it “used” off the AGN classifieds - it hadn’t been shot much and needed my usual polishing up, but it’s incredible now - keeps me from buying a .177 Huntsman, lol.

That's great! I don't have a .177 that groups that great but I like beating my head against the wall so I keep trying.

Well, the Reximex didn’t shoot that way when I got it. I took it apart, polished every trigger sear, the bolt, inside the trigger housing, inside the bolt housing, cut the hammer spring from 3.1” down to 2.60”, and polished the hammer and inside the hammer where the hammer spring rides. I even polished the outside of the hammer spring itself.

Now its smooth as glass , which likely leads to its excellent, consistent shot strings and helps overall accuracy.

I’d say that this Turkish manufacturer that makes the Reximex, Kral and Benjamin Craftsman Series (Akela, Cayden, Kratos) knows how to make accurate barrels. I’ve got an Akela.177, Cayden .22 and this Daystar .177 and they all have been extremely accurate once I polished them up.

What are the .177s that you have?

My .177s are getting better accuracy with time and the work I put into them. The impact is getting better in high power, and pretty horrible in low power. The bsa ultra clx is better unregulated with the new barrel I put in and I have a pp750 that I have several barrels I've been working with that do ok to 35 yards. Okay for me is that dime at 35. I am very surprised at what a .177 will spread to in just a couple yards. I won't even attempt to do the 50 yard challenge until I can do better at the closer ranges in 177

Thanks. I understand that there is a good pressure range for unregulated guns, but this one is regulated, so it should be the same pressure forcing the pellet each shot. Am I missing something or not thinking correctly?

I probably just need to practice a bit more. If the time ever becomes free.

I have not found a .177 that doesn’t shoot the JSB/FX/AA 10.3 grain pellet well. It’s definitely one of JSBs best pellets.

I was shooting them often in the 890-902fps range and they did well, but I’m finding they are even more consistently accurate in the 845-865 range. I can get consistent 195s shooting straight from the tin with multiple .177 rifles.

I have no preference for regulated vs. unregged. Overall I find unregulated to be more consistent shot-to-shot. Unregulated also seems to handle temperature changes better - I’m in New England and shoot year round.

I’m very happy with my lunchtime card!

This Weihrauch HW110 .22 is the 2nd rifle that I’ve been able to top 190 with using Crosman pellets. (Umarex Gauntlet .177 shoots the Crosman 10.5g lights out - shot many 195+ scores with Gauntlet using them)

This was a 193 10X using Crosman Ultra Dome 14.3g at about 700fps. “Crosman Flyer” on Target #4 kept me from shooting maybe 195… but ya gotta expect Crosman Flyers shooting these cheap pellets straight from the tin.

Maybe now I’ll see if I can shoot over 190 with the HW110 and CPHP 14.3s…? Who knows, it may be possible, lol

My uragan compact in 22 I love and it shoots amazing. It is regulated. But mine has a sweet spot where it shoots it's tightest. Between 210 bar and 175 bar. Above 250 it shoots a little high and gets one or two fliers. Below 175 it starts to shoot high again. Regulators are great but they are not perfect. I think I shot a 195 at 32 yards with that in the first 5 pages here. Oh I think I have a quick video of in the first page. I think that was after I just filled the bottle too Later I think got better with the score on the compact uragan.

Very happy with my lunchtime card today…

Weihrauch HW110 .22 using Crosman Premier Ultra Domes 14.3g. Shooting at 720fps. So shooting a mild 16.5 ft/lbs.

192 12X - with no significant “Crosman flyers”, across all 24 targets, lol. Shooting the Crosmans straight from the tin as always.

I made an adjustment and the HW110 seems even more consistent with cheap Crosman 14.3s - note that there were no “7s” on this card.

The HW110 is close to silent at 16.5 ft/lbs, and its an awesome backyard rifle if it can keep shooting 190+ with Crosman pellets!

Solid card Ed. 😀

As you know, I have the HW100 in .22 and currently shoot the JSB 18.1’s at 825 FPS. Have shot in the low 190’s, but can’t manage to get into mid/high 190’s so far with the Weihrauch.

Assume you just turned your HST down a bunch and left the reg alone to get to 720 FPS. I think the 100 and 110 both do better at lower velocities, as I recall mine shot pretty good at 775 FPS with the 18.1. My friend Ed has the .177 at 12 FPE, and it shot very well at 30-40 yards. I think he has since tuned it up to 16 FPE.

I think I asked you before, but have you given up on the JSB 15.89’s with your 110? Do you recall what tune/velocity you had with that pellet? I understand you like the Crossman’s, but I forget how your gun did with the 18 and 15.89’s with this challenge?

I need to get back out and shoot some 30 yard cards.
