Hi Challenge Shooters…
Sharing what I’ve been up to the past few days…
I was considering buying a 2nd FX Crown, but the seller wouldn’t budge – so I looked at my barrel inventory and realized that I had a 700mm .22 barrel for my existing Crown – that had never been shot or mounted.
The AGN member that I bought my Crown from sold it to me with 3 .22 barrels: 380, 500 and 700mm. He told me that it was originally a Continuum, and that he had never even mounted the 700mm barrel.
I’ve had great results with the 380 and 500 barrels - the 380 shooting 15.89g and the 500 shooting 18.13g. The cool thing is that I can keep the same reg and hammer spring when swapping from 380 to 500mm and the pellet speed remains virtually the same: 895fps for the 380 with 15.89g and 895fps for the 500mm with 18.13g.
Could I get lucky and have the 700mm shoot the 25.4g at 895 without changing the hammer spring wheel…? Almost…
Results: (Day 1)
500mm – PW=15 – 902-910fps with 18.13g
700mm – PW=15 – 970-978fps with 18.13g (65fps increase by going from 500mm to 700mm – wow)
700mm – PW=17 – 935-943 fps with 20.83g (shot a ¼” 5-shot group at 40 yards immediately !)
(Day 2)
700mm – PW=15 – 820fps with 25.4g
700mm – PW=21 – 880-888 with 25.4g
700mm – PW=15 – 882-891 with 20.83g
700mm – PW=17 – 902-919 with 20.83g
700mm – PW=17 – 964-975 with 18.13g (same as PW=15 on Day 1 test)
700mm – PW=12 – 885-895 with 18.13g
I just shot 5-shot 40 yard groups on Day 1 (Nov 15) – and they were all really good – ½” @ 40 yards – regardless of speed.
The 700mm barrel is really long on the Crown, but not a problem on the bench. It seems to flex a bit more downward on the 700mm than the 500mm when I clamped the Chinese chrony on the end of the moderator – but it shot damn well with the chrony clamped on.
I love rifles where its easy to swap barrels and calibers – its like getting a new rifle for the price of a barrel kit.
I shot some 40-Masters cards with the 700mm barrel on Nov 16th and 17th – I’ll share the results in my next post. Pretty darn good – despite a LOT of wind.
Paper Plate shows some 700mm groups I shot on Nov 17 - these were also good - can’t locate the Nov 15 initial groups - that plate had the 1/4” 20.83g group - stunned me.
