30-Yard Challenge

Went out early this morning. Got to the bench at 8am.

Wind was light at about 1-2/3 mph. One near flag deployed.

I started at 40Y with the RAW TM1000x .177 shooting FX 13.4g from 802-812 fps range. First card was an awful 185 and the second was a 190 something. Both were DQ’d because of fliers due to me not seating pellet correctly.

Joe C - chime in here. What I have finally discovered is that I ‘must’ fully press with my thumb, the pellet anll the way into chamber. I have noticed occasionally I have a bit of a hard time cocking all the way, if pellet is not 100% flush inside thimble. The TM1000x pellet probe is very sensitive and now I know that I was blaming some bad pellets because I wasn’t seating pellets completely flush with thimble.

I tested this many times today. Every single time my cocking cycle was not completely smooth, the pellet probe would force the pellet further into the chamber. It may need adjustment also, not sure.

When I finally figured this out, my accuracy improved.

One Leaderboard entry for May:
Taipan Vet 2
199-17X 30 Y Masters
JSB 20.83 Light ( First time I tried this pellet and had to turn down the Speed Dialer to get it flying at 905-910 FPS ) Both the JTS 22.07g and JSB 20.83g shoot great. Same with the AEA 21.9g.

Next up, Taipan Vet2 .22 cal 700mm barrel. Shot a few 30Y Masters, but nothing for the leaderboard in May. A couple 195’s, but I previously shot a 197 already in a prior session.

One note: My Great White 9L fill tank needs a 5-year certification and the turnaround is slow because this is the start of scuba dive season. I may be out of action until I get this completed. Might be a few weeks.

Not my best, but the wind was tough.

just to get this straight , when your shooting the target is always hung vertical , correct ? because i see some bench targets hung horizontal, in use . which to me when i look at your targets the wind drift is off .

Not following…

I do always shoot vertical ( portrait vs. landscape) hung targets. I suppose I could try hanging them horizontally.
What does shooting vertically vs. horizontally have to do with windrift? Can you clarify?

Tommy, I suggest you check with your local or a neighboring fire department to find out who they use for their tank hydrotesting. Also, check for any fire extinguisher sales/service businesses in your area as many of those provide hydrotesting services.

Thank you Marvin.

My local Dive Shop recommended a very reputable SCBA and Scuba Certification Shop. They charge $72 and thoroughly inspect the tanks. Py Barker in Raleigh is doing my hydro test. I spoke to the owner and he can/will do my 4500 psi Great White.

Ironically, my 5-year cert was due December 2024. My Dive Shop caught it recently in filling my tank and told me they can’t fill it until I get it certified. NP, you don’t mess around with HPA, so I’m glad for the reminder.

Tommy, I seat mine flush with thimble as well my probe is set pretty tight against thimble (delrin seat) Mine is tight enough that over time it’s actually deformed this seat? But that’s how I received it, you can back the the probe out a little or make it tighter if wanted. It’s simple enough to do. I believe if you have a lathe or know someone who does you could make a longer pin in front of delrin seat but don’t know if it would really make a difference? Also pellets with a deeper or shallower internal skirt pocket will have a different effect on seating depth, I used to think this really mattered?

If you hang the target portrait the wind is say east then pellets can move to the right of POA if the target is hung landscape then the drift looks up when posted here as portrait . A lot of bench rest shooters hang landscape so they don't have to adj. vertical as often for practice .

Very interesting.

Stan, I kind of see the point. Using horizontal or landscape means fewer vertical adjustments. Thanks for the tip,

Nice shooting to you Tommy and the rest of you boys - some great scores being submitted.

@Tommy - did you shoot the 199 17X with the .177;TM1000 or the .22 Taipan? The card says the TM1000 but you writeup says the Taipan…

Thanks NA, I really haven’t done any tuning to the gun they come pretty set from Martin. It shoots the original 13.4 jsb’s at around 815fps, I put an air stripper on it “barrel likes it better than a moderator!” I have a Athlon 15-60x56 Ares ETR scope on it, it’s ok! But better choices out there for just a little more$$ “think sightron”.
I do want to say that at 40yds with a .177 much wind especially a switching or variable speed wind your already behind the Eight ball! That’s why I normally post what my flags are doing because people can understand why I might shoot a score like tonight, mind you this might be the best 40yrd card I ever shoot with this gun and barrel!.

Thanks for providing the details Joe. QUESTION: What magnification did you have the Ares set to when you shot the card?

Great card - 196 13X 40-Masters with a .177 is awesome shooting!

Awesome job Ricky! A 200 18X 30-Masters while timing it for speed…. I‘ve never shot 18X…. period, lol.

Ed, please remove my 4-12-25 (post 3081) from the 40 yd Masters Leaderboard. There are two issues, one the target was actually a Challenge card and secondly, I incorrectly showed the pellet to be 10.3 gr. when it should have shown 13.4 gr. Don't have an answer/excuse for that one.

We experienced very pleasant conditions today with gentle breezes and warm temperatures. I managed to get in three cards, two of which I submit for the Leaderboards. Forgot to show the pellets as .177 cal..

Hi Marvin,

Yes, I will remove the previous 199 16X from the 40-Masters board - I posted to the wrong board… should have gone on the 40-Challenge board. Of course , you have now beat it with the 200 40-Challenge.

Great cards at both 40-Challenge and 40-Masters - congrats on the 200!

Taipan - card is correct.

Typo on my summary. 199-17X with RAW TM1000X for May 30 Y Masters leaderboard.

Phenomenal shooting Marvin! I truly admire these high scores with .177’s at 40 yards.

Maybe this has already been brought up? But would like to know if you shoot a .22 do you use a .22 plug and what’s the scoring Dia. .2155 which is the outer dia. Of the Scoring ring from the plug of 10m with the clear plastic magnifier?
If you use a .177 dia. Plug then there is a lot of play which is open for interpretation. Note: I turned my aluminum Mike N. Plugs to .2145 for scoring Dia. And the plug Dia. Is .1795 and .1965 for the .22 if these dimensions are close to what you’re seeing? I turned Mikes plugs slightly smaller than than the 10m plugs.

Hi Joe,

The official rules of our challenge specify that a .22 scoring gauge is used - whether shooting .177 or .22 (or .25 - the .22 gauge still kinda works).

This is the scoring gauge (plug) that I use. I also have Freeland’s .177 gauge.

I will put calipers on my Freeland .22 gauge and give you the diameter.

Here in my country we follow the WRABF/ERABSFscoring system. Scoring plug flange diameter must be .224” when scoring .177 - .22 cal targets but we use the undersized ISSF E-Z scoring plugs by Gehmann

Since I have poor eyesight even with my eyeglasses on, I purchased a digital microscope that has an HDMI output for wide screen TV, can both take photos and videos in UHD. I am one of the official scorers during tournaments due to my strictness in scoring and no one can overturn or contest my decision. 😆

Official WRABF/ERABSF scoring plug is only available for the UK market! 😭
