.357 slug option….

Looking for opinions/experiences on who pours/swages the most aerodynamically correct slug design for the .357 round. Preferably for longer range target application. With a few exceptions, the majority of what is available, once entering into the larger bores, are of the wide open hollow hunting design.

Wanting to start looking at options prior to receiving my tuned Benjamin Bulldog.

First thing is that you need to consider the maximum length, 0.750 inch is safe but you can kind of squeeze it to 0.770 inch long.

The boat tail design that Griffin sells is pretty good, the hollow point does not always equate to hunting. Hollow points/tail allow for a longer projectile for higher BC and other changes in center of gravity that I don't fully understand.

Are you going to cast your own, or are you looking to buy? Buying "real" bullets can be tricky because most are going to be a harder alloy, you need to be able to get softer pure lead or lead with 2% tin. Casting yourself is of course an option and you control the alloy.

Of the cast stuff I've made, the one that has the most testing is a Lee 356-125-2R which is a round nose solid in 125 grains. Accurate and I have it going a little over 800fps in my Bulldog, but I am not going for maximum power either. If I wanted to go maximum velocity, I would probably get the Griffin 115 boat tail with the LDC (low density core), the plastic ball gives support and lets him make a longer bullet, the boat tail helps fight drag. I can't cast this round, or anything even close to that weight and length.

I have several other rounds that I do cast, but I haven't not shot for accuracy yet, so don't want to recommend them until I test them. I have 88-84 grains solid of hollow point, another different 125 grain hollow point, and a 155 grain flat solid point that I'm going to be doing accuracy testing with very soon now that the weather is getting warmer. If you look at Accurate Molds you might find a good boat tail design that you can cast, also look at NOE molds and MP Molds to see. NOE and MP Molds can make hollow point which again can give you a longer bullet with hopefully less drag. Bob's Boat Tail designs are very good at the lower speeds we are generally using (BBT) and NOE carries most varieties of this design.

Don't forget powder coat or lube (or both), otherwise you may be cleaning your barrel more often than you think. It's better if the bore is polished and tools for this are simple to make, your's might come polished depending on where you are buying it.

I need to cast more of the 88-84 grain rounds and see what else I might be low on to prepare for the better weather. I think I need the 125 hollow points too, those are a Lyman mold, so single cast and kind of slow.
