It was a long drive from New Mexico to South Central North Dakota for the annual prairie dog hunt with my brother (The "no prairie dog left behind" program). I got there safely (pic.1) and on the first day of course, the wind was blowing like it always does in North Dakota. But on the second and third day the wind was very cooperative. I was hoping to get a couple of days of low wind in order to try to break my last year's record of a 400 yd. prairie dog kill with my .30 cal Impact.
Early in the morning on the second day, when the wind was at its lowest, I was able to get one at 392 yards (pic 2); nine yards away from getting the 401 yards I needed to break my 400 yard record. Later that same day, when the wind went down again, I was able to get one at 397 yards - 4 yards short of the 401 yds. I needed (pic 3). I didn't know until I walked out there that it was very close to the first one I shot. They were about 5 yards apart. You can see in the third picture the one on the left was the farthest and the one on the right was the earlier one that day. At the very top you can see the trucks and trailer in the background. So close. Like the saying goes: close only counts in horseshoes and dancing. It was fun either way. Shot a lot of dogs. It was a blast to be an out there again this year.
