$430 for a New PCP

So, today I can confirm that my Nova Liberty is in fact leaking. It’s losing about 100 psi a day. I’m sure that this will get progressively worse, so I’ve decided to ask ATI for a refund. I’m going to take that money + $190 and get a new PCP. I have my eyes on a few old Daystates but just in case I would like to know what are the other $430 PCP options out there (new or used).

My guidelines (for the stock version without any modifications):

- First of all, accurate. It must shot at least sub .6” groups at 45 yards with the right pellets (preferably cheap pellets like crossman premiere 14.3g), and it has to group under an 1” at 75 yards

- Quiet, though it doesn’t have to be whisper quiet or anything. If it’s like the Liberty I have no problem.

- Power should come in at 28-35ft lbs, but I’m not saying this is a must.

- Shot count has to be above 40 shots (stock) and if it’s not regulated it has to have at least 30 consistent shots (at 80 yards consistent)

- It has to be reliable and quality. I want a rifle that will not break on me like this Liberty did. I really stress on this as I have enough of having to deal with issues

- I don’t care for cocking system, but side-lever actions are preferred

- It has to be good at shooting offhand (It can’t weigh more than 8lbs unscoped but also has to weigh more than 5 lbs)

- I would like this gun to have a wooden stock (and a good one!).

- It has to be .22 cal.

I won’t hunt with this gun (I’m not a hunter) and will use it for “precise target work“ (mostly — you can’t shoot airguns and not plink a bit!).

Thanks,

AK

Leaks are annoying, and if it’s new I can understand wanting to return it. At the same time, whatever PCP you buy to replace it will leak sooner or later so if you like it, might as well learn how to replace a seal. Otherwise it’s just a matter of postponing the inevitable.

Well, this leaked from the factory. Also, if it leaks when I have the warranty still valid you bet I won’t void it disassembling my only PCP!

+ People tried to replace seals on the Liberty and apparently it’s something to do with the poppet, which is something that I don’t want to mess with right now

I'd keep it if it were me. If it's that accurate as you claim I'd buy another in a different caliber and swap out the uppers. Shouldn't be difficult to do just a couple of bolts and positioning the transfer port swapping if it's different size. LATER fix that damn leak and enjoy that other caliber gun. At least you're going to realize how simple it really is to replace o-rings.

A used Marauder with a MMHF barrel would be my next choice for what you want or a Field and Target but be aware it's going to be shooting slow in 22 but gets a lot of consistent shots like 60-70 or so shooting 14.3gr Crosman and a little more shooting heavier ammo. Mine with the factory Crosman improved barrel in 22 can keep all shots inside a dime at 55 yards shooting 14.3gr Crosman Ultra Magnum domes straight out of the tin on a calm day. Yo!

Buccaneer won’t perform all that. Won’t even come close. I have the real BSA variant, the R10. (Buccaneer is Gamo BTW)

IMO, you are going to need to change one of your criteria; lower your performance requirements (somewhat) or raise your price (by a lot).
Sorry, not trying to be a jerk but that’s just the reality of it.

I guess I got spoiled by the Liberty ;)

I could get a parts Liberty gun maybe but anyway...

Daystate it is.

I want something that won’t die on me like the Liberty. If I had two guns, I would change the seals. But I don’t. I may just get a “parts” Liberty and a used Daystate (that was recently re-sealed).

But seriously guys! I’m only 1 year into airgunning, and though I may know my way around (kind of), I’m not yet going to be doing mods, even mods that you think are easy! I will get a cheap pcp to test my skills on soon, but until then, I ain’t putting my one and only airgun that I use every day on the operation table!

Plus I crave for a new airgun...

Doesn't make much sense buying a broken gun to fix yours if you're not even willing to try to fix your good one in the first place and what if the parts you needed are no good on the parts gun too? Buy the new one in a different caliber and swap uppers for now they're cheap enough... I know the 177s good chance pretty accurate 1 inch maybe better at 50 yards cheaper to shoot 177 too.

I'm gonna FESS UP I bought another 177 Nova Freedom because my first one quit pumping and it shot sub 3/8 to 1/4 at 50 yards no way I was sending it nowhere period it's sooooo fricken accurate I'd be an idiot to have an exchange even for a new one risking a not as accurate barrel so I bought a used one and swapped uppers and OH HAPPY DAY. Never even shot the other one to check for accuracy now THATS a later project...easy fix maybe but I'm too lazy now days... Rather be shootin than fixin... Yo!

Bsa buckaneer should be decent. It essentially a Gamo urban with a nice wood stock. My dads Gamo urban is extremely accurate. However if you really want the best target accuracy don't get the bsa buck. It has a closed reciever so it can't accept a single shot tray. Honestly I recommend a marauder with lw barrel. Get one used for 350 or 400 and instal a huma reg and reseal while your at it. Possibly the wood stock might not be as pretty as you would like.

Mine (Buccaneer) with Huma reg shoots fine but only with the barrel band REMOVED. Yo!

I have no doubt any bsa gun will be accurate. My dads urban is lights out. All I was saying was that a single shot tray option is excellent for target shooting and competition. I like having the option. Good wood stock for 430 might be hard to do. If I wanted a good wood stock for that price I'd get an hw from krale and just go springer. Have you seen the hatsan flash wood? Seems to have the power and accuracy you want as well as wieght. Never seen the stock so can't vet but hatsan uses good wood for thier guns.

Thanks for all the replies!

For the scorpion, that’s what I’m thinking about more and more.

I agree with the statement that I would like to have a single shot tray (like, this is a must)

The Hatsan Flash is too powerful and the shot curve is ridiculous. I could tune it down by getting the hammer spring shims out but...

I thought of taking a refurb. Hatsan AT44-10 (not QE version), adding a moderator (wolf), and adding a regulator (altaros). Would that work? I like the side action of the AT44-10 and it’s not super overpowered (from what I can tell). Plus, I plan to get a chronograph so I would be able to do some testing with the regulator. The issue is that I’ve heard that refurb. Hatsan are hit-or-miss.

Here are the options I’ve come up with:

1. Refurb. Hatsan AT44-10, wolf moderator, and altaros regulator

2. BSA Scorpion (if it can fit in my budget)

3. BSA Buccaneer with regulator (or just the Gamo one with a regulator if their the same thing(?))

4. Daystate .22 X2 (I’m getting to like this version less... but I still would love to have a Daystate!)

5. I keep my Liberty, source parts, and get the Beeman Commander as a backup

I would like to add a few points to my Liberty. First of all, though the accuracy can be great (4 shots 1” at 80yrds), it’s seriously inconsistent. Fliers are stupidly common — almost all my 5 shot groups at 50 go like this: 3-4 shots in 1/2”, the other 1-2 stretch it out too 1.5”

Heres a group at 80 yards:

That interior 4 shot group is comfortably less than an inch, but that flier stretches the group out to 2.5”
Heres the next 10 shot group @80 yards (all of this is with the same pellets—Baracuda 5.53s)
1589544126_1480477335ebe84bec9fa44.82906221.jpg

Total mess.
And another one (5 shots) as 80:

That’s a good scenario — 1” and then somewhere in the 5 shots I get a flier or two. When I do a 10 shot group 2” is on a good day (a VERY good day). Does this have something to do with the reg? Most of these groups were shot on calm days, so it’s not the wind (I don’t think). At least the cocking stick is slowly going away, so that’s one good thing.

Thanks,

AK

@Atoni, the groups you’re displaying, where is the POA? A lot of guns can “group”, are they grouping at POA? What pellets are you using for these groups? My first PCP is an Urban, solid little rifle. But it cannot be single loaded, which is fine for hunting or plinking. But I find I like single loading when on my home bench, so I wouldn’t purchase another PCP that couldn’t be singly loaded.
