5000psi (350bar) Air Tanks and Air Bottles – Do they EXIST??


I have been offered the GX compressor, the CS4 model charges up to 5000psi (400 bar).

Why would I want that? (Why does it even exist, UNLESS.... – there are air tanks and air bottles that offer that pressure?)

Nitrogen bottles are commonly 6500 psi .. are STEEL and VERY Heavy.

The physics of compressed air has the actual usable air diminishing @ 250 bar and above. As in the Molecules compressed start running out of room for more molecules starting @ 250 bar. The Molecules ( usable output as a volume ) from say 100 bar to 200 bar has MORE volume than 200 bar to 300 bar.
Pressures beyond that is a pursuit of diminishing returns along with being VERY very hard of the miens of sealing & containment as well producing such pressure/s.

Just because the compressor is ABLE to pump 5,000psi don't waste your energy & money trying to find a tank with above 4500psi maximum. Just be glad it won't work as hard as a compressor with 4500psi max.

Oh, there are at least two guns that do take 5000psi (350bar) — the Huben K1 and the Huben pistol GK1.
Yeah, the GK1....: 19 shot semi-auto PISTOL, at 40FPE in .22 caliber!!

So, the amount of air molecules I have to add to fill a tank from 200 to 250bar is more than filling that same tank from 250 to 300bar.

➔ Meaning for my shot count — with my reg set at 200bar — I get less shots from 300 down to 250bar, then from 250 down to 200bar. Right?

➔ So, air/ shot count is non-linear when relating it to pressure in the air reservoir.

I have a GX CS3 (loaned to my kid) and a GX CS4. The CS4 works much better at filling everything I own regardless of the max pressure desired and it never overheats. Also easier to grease it - just turn the grease knob 1 turn. On the CS3 you have to open up the case and remove stuff to grease it.

The CS3 and my Yong Heng struggle to get to 4500 PSI. I want my tanks at max pressure when I leave the house.

So YES the ratio of volume to pressure IS NOT LINEAR and becomes very evident at VERY high pressure when compressing "Air"

Personally I'm with Motorhead, it's easier to utilise lower, for me 250 bar. Less time, nerves and stress, on everything.
I'm no technical guy, especially in the English language.
Earlier days, first Chinese compressor. Everything had to be 300 bar, do or die.😯😉
Can this compressor do this!?

Eventually I found out a compromise, fill nothing above 250 ish bar.
A lot of time, nerves and mechanical stress removed. Fill time reduced, stress reduced and the coffee intake during filling definitely decreased.
Less is more, at the end of a day's shooting my bottle takes minutes ago top up, previously I used to call a bottle top up "a coffee morning".

So, Huben increasing pressure from the customary 300bar to 350bar isn't such a great win in shot count after all.... 👍🏼

While the impact of the van der Wahl forces (the reason for the change in "efficiency" of pumping) is real , the impact of them is not that severe - if I recall correctly from working it through it a few years back, the impact is about 7% more pressure from each unit of added atmospheric air in the approximately 3600 to 5000 PSI range. So one would get about 7% fewer shots from the added air than one would expect without this effect.

And, I don't mind being pulled one way ("300bar isn't worth it" — that's how at least I interpreted it) — and then just to get pulled the way ("the shotcout loss from 250 to 300 bar is only 7%").

➧ And so, after all, maybe the Hubens' 350bar isn't such a stupid idea.
And maybe the GX CS4 compressor that can deliver that kind pressure isn't such a stupid idea.

Especially if I can share the compressor expense with another local airgunner.
