Does not seem to matter the brand. How is it that the 177 models get a lower shot count than the 22 versions? This seems counter to physics.

For the same power, the .177 will get less shot than the .22 because it has less area the air is pushing against while it's still in the barrel.

I dont know the math behind it, nor do I even know if I'm correct. I could be FOS... but here is the way I look at it. We've all shot a spit wad through a straw, yes? Ever try shooting a tiny spit wad through a coffee stirrer? Not near as efficient as the standard size spit was shooter we all made as kids (and some still do!)

You have to push an 8 grain pellet harder to achieve 12 fpe than pushing a 14 grain pellet to the same power level.
Take your 177 12 fpe gun and slap a 22 barrel on it and don't change anything else, it'll be pushing in the upper teens or low 20s most likely.

PSI working on the area of the bore .... Larger the bore being greater exposed area the greater becomes the push for any given PSI.
Volume or air is consumed more with a smaller bore as the guns tune to produce any given speed required air being released for a longer period or at greater pressure accelerating projectile.
There indeed is set up and porting / valve specs that can skew this basic statement.
