A little confession is good

Just shooting BB's, new or old, ruins barrels it really makes no difference if you recycle them.

You are a baaaad man! Evil even. ;^)

Shoot pellets or lead BB's if you want the barrels to last longer. The gun is cheap as are the barrels from Crosman if you want to replace it. So nothing to be concerned about.

My confession;

I tear up brand new guns, before they are even shot, and steal parts from other $2000 complete guns for projects I am werqing on.

I am an evil man. ;^( Bad me ;^)

Glad I could get that off of my chest I feel better now. ;^)

Mine was more serious. When I started airgunning as an adult I bought an umarex fusion. The co2 cylinder was not sealing correctly and when I pulled the trigger no air came out. At the same time the cylinder cap would not budge. This would tell anyone with a brain that it was under pressure but since all I ever knew about airguns was from springers and pumpers I just took a pair of channel locks and pried it off. The resulting explosion put two co2 cylinders into my ceiling sideways and would have at least blinded me if they hit my face. I'm lucky to be alive. I am now very experienced with all air guns but I never forgot that lesson. Telling this story so nobody else makes that mistake. 3 years of study and life lessons makes me now capable to say that I am now knowledgeable in this area but the scary fact is that I made an almost fatal or life changing decision when I wasn't. Don't learn like I did.

I dont like to kill birds, but one day 2 years ago I did want to get the feel of it. My plan was to shoot a pellet behind a sparrow on the ground about 40 yards out and downhill from me. I took a shot, and before I knew it, the bird was hopping on one wing, and then my dog quickly went in for the kill. I have been doing penance every day for my sin but the guilt is still lodged in my soul...

So glad you got lucky Raden! I’ve definitely learned from other peoples lessons. I’m so cautious about HPA now that I won’t try anything I don’t completely understand. Sometimes it makes me ask what I think is a stupid question, but that’s ok.

Biohazardman, what you have admitted to is beyond words…you must certainly be the very core of evil. We all already knew that though lol!! Definitely just kidding!

My worst sin is awful, and I admit I have done it twice…but never again. I left my HW44 pistol with a Leopold scope sitting on the bags in position for shooting whilst I went for pellets, I heard the crash as it fell to the deck breaking off the silencer. But I have to admit that I had also done it with my favorite rifle too, although I got lucky and it didn’t hit the deck. Absolutely no more leaving the guns balanced in the bags. This is probably defined more as stupid than evil ha ha!

Philip, don’t feel too bad about that sparrow. They are ruthless to swallows, and are invasive species. But I think it’s good to be aware of how precious life is, all life. Even pests that need a pellet.

I was helping a buddy with some maintenance on his PCP, can't remember which one. We had it in the cradle, sitting on a table. He thought the chamber was empty, but wasn't 100% sure. So, better to be safe, I took a rod and gently pushed down the bore. Sure enough, I felt the resistance of a pellet, and I pushed it out the breech. So, back to work on a proven safe rifle. As we were either bleeding or adding air, wham, a pellet shoots into the wall. There had been 2 in the barrel! My obvious mistake, I quit pushing the rod when a pellet came out, and I didn't push the end of the rod out the breech to verify. Luckily, excluding my bone head mistake, our gun handling was traditionally safe, and neither of us was in the potential line of fire. A quick paint touch-up and I avoided a painful admission to my wife! Lesson learned, even "empty" guns might be loaded.

Ed is being too kind here, this was really my fault. Let me explain.

If I had made 100% sure that I shot out the pellets into my pellet trap BEFORE I went over to his house to work on the RAW, this would not have happened. Now, every time I go over, I always make sure the barrel is clear before I head over to his house. Then, I also take a precautionary shot into his pellet trap to make double sure before we begin.

I will say, this woke us both up and I felt terrible about the incident. Also, my wife would have 'roasted' me if this happened at our house.

It was a epic mistake. I know I'm not the only one here that has made such such a big mistake. I hope this helps someone.

Raden,

I'm with you on the respect for HPA. And, NO...you are not the only one who has made epic mistakes.

While at the range last year, I was interrupted by a good shooting RF friend that was asking me a zillion questions about my RAW and airguns in general. Normally, I always try and fill my guns when I am NOT TALKING! I purposely do this while not talking for a reason.

This particular time, I forgot if I had bled the air out of my gun/hose ( while I was talking ) and when I went to remove the quick connect, bang!!! The nozzle belted me in my face and left a mark for a few days. I had forgotten to bleed the air out of the gun/hose. Bad, bad mistake.

Luckily, I was only sore and it did not hit me in my eye. Like you, this was a big lesson and I will never forget and am now very careful; especially after having several years of more experience and knowledge. Have total respect for HPA and any fire arms, as it relates to safety.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Yes, a little confession will do a lot of good to most of us.

🔹 My first air rifle was a springer.

Not knowing about the artillery hold I wanted to stabilize the gun and an attachable bipod on this springer seemed the perfect solution! 🙄

Needless to say I hit even less after "stabilizing the rifle" with that bipod. 🙄

🔹 Months later I had dug through forums and read the Godfather's description of the artillery hold (AG Godfather Tom Gaylord is still very active in writing airgun reviews and airgun history**).

One day I felt a pigeon taunting me, perched on a far away tree. Now, I hadn't hit much at any range with this bottom-of-the-barrel springer, certainly nothing at 50 yards....

But I took a shot** since I hadn't shot in a while and felt withdrawal symptoms (you know what I'm talking about!). 🙄

And well, I figured, I might as well try this weird artillery hold I've been reading about.....

So I did. And nailed the pigeon DRT!! 😄

*This happened a long time ago. My approach to shooting quarry has changed much since then! 😊

My first sin was a warm up. I did many evil things with and to airguns. Many ivolving WD 40. Two of my worst. I used my Dad's FBK 10 meter Olympic match rifle to hit the neighbors cat right in the pucker. We had just put fresh gravel on the parking pad off of our alley. That tom thought next to my mom's car was his personal dumping ground. After getting chewed out for not removing the droppings (Mom stepped in them again) I set up to end this. I could sit on a chair and open a basement window. Our deck was over me. I had a snipers hide view of the area. Not that long he came over. Didn't kill him but he never returned. Now for the sin. I didn't help Dad get the airguns out of the basement and they were lost in the flood. Now these events were separated by many years.

I was a police officer and dealing with the evacuation....but still it still bothers me.

I let a gunsmith more or less ruin a couple of Beeman R8's. These were pretty worn club guns I paid up for in the interest of helping the club finance a PCP or two for youth shooters. I took the separated barrels and compression tubes to a professional gunsmith for re-bluing before I planned to rebuild the internals. He did not have an example of his work to show me but explained that he would bead blast the guns then POLISH them before bluing. Bead blast should have been a red flag but when he said "polish" I assumed they'd come out looking bright and shiny and I was blinded by his incredibly fair price of $75 per gun (he needed the work). He must have seen the look on my face when I picked them up and said "Ohhhhhh, they have a matte finish now?" because he lowered the price to $50 per gun.

For two years they have sat, disassembled because I am so disgusted with myself. They'll make great shooters and will appeal to someone else who likes a matte finish some day, but they are not what I wanted for myself.

I respect people who live by a code and respect yours to not kill pests. I do not agree with your assessment that those who do kill pests are immoral. I can tell you that there are invasive species that destroy local habitat, look up Iguana man on YouTube. He kills iguanas because in Florida they displace many local species including some endangered ones. Pesting is something that is actually good for the environment and can actually save many more animals. The iguana is a good example because they tear up vegetation killing tons of animals that rely on it to eat or make homes they eat bird eggs but they also eat everything else in site making many local wildlife starve. They are not the only animal that has negative effects on nature. The nutria dig holes in dykes and can literally kill humans with floods and anything else that lives in the flood zone. Do I need to talk about rats and the plague? There are indeed pests that need culling to maintain a healthy balance. In fact just hunting in general actually helps conservation. In fact its the single most beneficial thing for it. I'm not mad at you or anything. I actually truly do respect your point of view but there are a lot of good guys here that kill pests here and they are by and large very ethical people who exercises extreme stewardship of their local hunting grounds or dairy farm or wherever they pest. I just really want to educate you on this because its a good practice even if its not for you. The fear and anger over hunting/pesting has dramatically hurt efforts to conserve nature and pass down these wholesome sports for future generations. Hope you see where I'm coming from.

I’ve shared this story on here before-

when I had my very first Beeman R10 deluxe, I thought this was the end all of all things Airguns. I drove to Beeman’s shop in Santa Rosa to not only buy that gun, but every accessory made for it. Truly an accurate gun. Shortly after, I picked up the Beeman RX gas ram in 20 cal. that Beeman just released. Ohhh boy was i styling, now. Big, accurate power!

but how accurate? I just had to find out when I was out in the woods and came upon an un fired 357 mag cartridge on the ground. I know, I’ll wedge it on that tree knot and see if I can hit the primer! Yeah!!

at 15 yards away, I used the hood of my 1985 Ford ranger as a rest, set my X hairs thru the Marksman 4-12x40 scope, and squeezed the trigger….. what an idiot! Can you say KABLAAAM!!! and that case came flying back and cracked my windshield. What a dumb move!!! Learned my lesson, right?

Nope! 34 years later, I still on occasion shoot at primers, but this time I use the strips of primers that come on powder actuated Hilti guns. I use clips to hold them in place on my steel pellet trap and at 50 yards and armed with an accurate PCP I try and pretend I’m a military sniper taking out dynamite that’s been methodically placed under the bridge’s main supports that the enemy tanks are now crossing over. Should you try this, make sure and watch Shaving Ryan’s Privates, I mean Saving Private Ryan first.

Upon impact, it makes a sharp pop is all, and nothing flying back at me, lol. Tanks destroyed, USA wins, and in my own mind I’m the talk of the platoon- ha!!
