A proper bench

I made one from a welding trailer so I could tow it to where I wanted to shoot, had a big sun umbrella that I could mount to keep sun off, carpet on top etc. Its now been torn apart and I built a big log splitter onto the trailer. It was nice to shoot off of for 5-6 yrs though. Its not completely finished in pics.

I put a pvc tube on side to keep umbrella in.

I started with a WorkX bench which is better than nothing and portable but I found myself blowing groups every time I lost concentration.

Then the idea popped into my head, uh you should go to a store that sells all kinds of used things. I did and found a heavy duty table that weighs 150 pounds or so. Then set it on concrete by my barn and put another 100 pounds of lead on it. A very stable place to shoot from now.

I'm using a 20 year old picnic table that's rotting away. Its good enough. Stable if you sit in the right spot, but it needed to be replaced 10 years ago. And it isn't even comfortable. But it has inspired me to shoot more offhand or unsupported just to get away from it.

I may have asked you this before but did you refinish that M-Rod? It does not have checkering and the Benjamin logo engraved? I like the blonde color of the wood very much!

I used to use a portable home made bench that I still have but last year I decided to upgrade. My current bench is made of construction 2x6s glued up. I use a mechanics stool from Harbor freight to sit on. I have one figure 8 fastener on the back of the bench attaching it to the porch railing. That really improved stability. It is painted with the same paint as the porch railing. All three legs have an adjustable foot. It is level side to side but slopes down in the front towards the target.

Recently posted on another thread my bench I built out of the Rugged Buddy folding legs 5 or 6+ years ago, unfinished plywood top. Never used it and it sat in storage for years. Finally finished top with stain and poly this past weekend. It’s a shame they don’t sell these particular folding legs anymore, they are pretty solid and fold easily for compact storage, plus they were cheap if I remember correctly. I will be using this bench finally for a couple of new spots I can shoot at and it is portable enough to fit in truck.
Looking through all the portable bench threads recently on AGN, I’ve seen a couple of three legged tables, threaded pipe legs for easy takedown that look like to be nice and stable on uneven ground, might be my next winter project.

Yes, it is. I stripped the turkey-turd tan off and sanded the hell out of it. Then I finished it up like I do with my axe hafts: a couple of coats of BLO and a concoction of beeswax and mineral oil. Great on a field gun and easy to fix.
Edited to add: I'd probably go with tung oil these days, but boiled linseed oil is fairly durable and water repellent.
