A Taipan short review with standards

I just had to see what the fuss was all about , so I placed an order from Utah Air for a Veteran Standard. It didn't take long to show up , packed well, even had fragile stickers on the box. I ran a few patches down the barrel and off to gather some data. It was shooting 18g pellets at 920 and giving me standard deviation as low as 1.8 fps and in the 2s. The Maverick was my first regulated pcp and I've never had such low numbers. And the Vets accuracy is simply outstanding. So for investment purposes I was excited to try out compact and couldn't pass up the sale price. So I've had a chance to try out the Shorty .177 for a couple days. It showed up shooting 10.9g FX pellets right around 900 fps, Tony's shot string, and my crossman 10.4 gr around 880 fps. The weight or lack of is nice and accuracy is just like larger vet Standard . Really good. I'm really satisfied with the Vets and having fun , just taking my time with the single shot tray. So now I have 2 sets of Orings , probes ect that they came with and 2 nice magazines in .177 and .22. Anyways, I checked the tune and it was adjusted a little beyond the knee , so backed it off 1/2 turn and my shot count went way up and it sounded better and lost only a little velocity. I was a little worried from reading of Veteran shorts in .177 having large SDs because of ports being too large and possibly over powered for normal weight 177 pellets. But mine is doing great in that area. Absolutely having fun and ready for some pests to get out of line. My cat is out doing so far this year. With scope and rings it under 8lbs. A couple of shot strings shooting just under 18 fpe. Peace.

Nice vets. I have a used 25 standard on its way to me now. Can’t wait to set it up and see what it’s capable of.

Is the .25 standard from Wenatchee Washington ? I saw one for sale on NW firearms that seemed like a good deal. I would bet your gonna like it . The standard is about the same size as FXs compact bullpups.

No. An awesome member on here listed it in the classifieds.

I had a 25 standard before with a really nice laminate stock, but de used I hated bullpups and sold them all for conventional rifles. Of all of them, the vet I missed the most. Should be here tomorrow, so I can test it over the weekend.

Congrats on the .25 compact. That's going to be a nice one, small and powerful. Feel free to post pics, questions, tunes, tips or targets . For any Taipan owners, or people that had one in the past.
Will do! My first question that I was thumbing through last night, is the Speed Dialer a good accessory? I'm not huge into buying guns and then completely changing them and modding them. But I do like the subtle helpful accessories.
I'll be plinking with pellets and don't plan to use slugs. And then Ill be pesting ground squirrels and birds in my yard out to 40. So constant adjustments of the fps won't be needed.

@madeintheuk After searching around last night regarding the taipan vet I saw that you also bought one last year. Yes I went down a rabbit hole researching this beauty. What made you want to buy it again?

I don't think the speed dialer is really necessary imo . What I did is marked the reciever and hammer adjustment screw, so I could always know where it was set .And it's easy for me to remember the position for different pellets. Like Hades are lighter than the18gs and I know 3/4 of a turn out gives me 900 fps and the factory tune sends 18g at 920 fps. And don't forget there's a set screw to hold the hammer adjustment in place.

The bottom picture is the Standard set at the the factory settings. Top picture is the compact turned out a half turn.

There is no need to buy the speed dialer. The rifle comes with 2 straight dowel pins that you insert into the HS adjuster holes and use those pins to rotate the HS adjuster, thus changing the velocity. Once you reach your desired velocity tune, remove the pins, snug the set screw in the action which prevents the HS adjuster from moving.
