A windy afternoon in my favorite place.....

The day was absolutely beautiful today. The temperature was in the 50's and sunny. So, I decided to head to my favorite little spot in the woods for some afternoon squirrel action. As soon as I got there and stepped out of the truck I knew it was really too windy. I walked across a pasture to get to the wood line and the wind was whipping!! I mean really getting it! I knew that there was way too much wind to have any kind of a productive squirrel hunt. They just don't move much in this kinda wind. They stay held up in their little tree houses until the wind lays down......then they move in order to eat. But I can think of no better place to be on a beautiful afternoon this time of year than in the woods.....windy or not. I sat for three and a half hours and saw nothing but a bunch of Turkey Buzzards circling over head for nearly the entire time. I guess they were just waiting on me to die...LOL. It was getting kinda late and it was starting to get pretty low light conditions in the woods. So, I started my walk out and spotted two squirrels coming down an old oak. I dropped to a knee and as soon as they hit the ground I was able to pop one with the Marauder. The other took off........I had to gather up and go home. Had to get the Christmas decorations out of the attic for the wife. Only killed the one squirrel. But, it was a really good day..........

I remember those kind of hunting experiences when I felt at peace just sitting in the woods. I remember once when hunting deer and elk in Colorado and we camped 30 miles out of Rangely. The rest of the hunting gang were wore out from the morning hunt. I was only 27 and was the young buck. After lunch I grabbed my Winchester M70 in .257 Robert's and decided to venture on my own. I was about half mile from camp in this canyon with groves of Aspen trees on both sides of me. I stopped and rested and the serenity and vastness of this place made me feel like I was really alone in the world. It was very peaceful though and I really felt part of nature. As I sat several cow elk ran through a clearing and headed into a Aspen thicket and disappeared into the dense growth. There crashing through the thick grove sounded like a Caterpillar Dozer plowing through ! I was amazed at their power and how fast they went through the trees. To this day I remember that solo hunt 35 years ago.

Awesome story.....I understand completely. There are some places in time that just kinda imprint on your soul. You will always be able to see and smell it like it was yesterday. Thanks for sharing that.

No problem ! Your experience set off a bell in my head. Your story and the pictures of the Alabama woods plucked the story from the memory of my own experience.
