AAFTA 2020 Grand Prix Results and new rules for 2021

I understand the 2020 Grand Prix winners were announced. I was also sent a link to updated rules dated end of January of this year. Problem is that on the AAFTA site there is no mention of either. Only 2 results from 2020 are posted and the rules still show the last update of 2018. Where were Grand Prix results posted other than seeing them on Facebook?

Thanks,

Dana

I don't think an illegal target should count whether it malfunctions or not! When I attend a match I should be able to have the expectation that it will be run according to the rules. I don't like driving to a match and finding out that they changed the rules without giving anyone a say in the matter. No club should be rewarded for using illegal targets and allowing them to count in the match which is what you would be allowing. If we are going to make any deviation from the rules we make it known at the shooters meeting and if ANYONE objects we correct that deviation before the match starts, no surprises!

Speaking about targets; we( at our matches) require that the entire animal(target) is visible not just the kill zone. We are running a shooting match, not a game of hide and seek. Just one of my pet gripes. I will spare you the entire list.

IMO FIELD TARGET Air Gun should be very similar to 3D Archery ...... Somewhere from the shooting position is a clear and unobstructed view to intended target.

I like that !! ..... Honestly don't care for the every position clear and easy as we now do it.

As to the target replace & re-shoot .... while it makes sense in fairness, it sucks in logistics of time and organizing to have EVERYONE re-shoot it ... IMO

Motorhead, I didn't see where EVERYONE must re-shoot a target that was replaced/repaired. Not sure if that is the intent. As a MD, I would let the shooters that highlighted the problem of the defective target reshoot it, but not sure I would have everyone go back that was before them. Perhaps it broke after the prior shooter, or perhaps prior shooters weren't good enough to know if they really hit it on the paddle... As a MD, I like the authority to make appropriate decisions on the spot.

Having been involved in a LOT of field target testing (falls every time to as little as 4 foot pound paddle hits, never falls to as much as 18-20 FP faceplate hits), match directing, and rules making, in my opinion there is no correct answer/remedy to suspected malfunctioning targets during championship matches.

Have I ever mentioned that match directing is a thankless job?

I have always noticed that the guys that don’t care if the target is visible from every shooting position sit on buckets. Make a lane where the bucket guys have to get down on the ground and you will see crying like you never have before. This exact thing happened at the Crosman in 2019, and I’m so happy I was there to see it. 😀

That was the only match I have ever shot hunter and I sat on the ground like normal wftf. There was a lane with a log placed where I could not see the kz, and I had to shoot it kneeling. I got the targets but said it was bull poop and the other hunter shooters around me quickly pointed out that I should learn to adapt. Two lanes later there was a big branch hanging down that blocked the bucket guys from a clear shot. I tossed my bumbag to the guy in the lane behind me and said he could use it...he scoffed at me and timed the lane out trying to find a way to shoot it from his bucket. They made a big stink, and I mean a big stink...and the MD came over and cut the limb out of the way. The shooters reset their timers and shot the lane again.

It was probably the highlight of the weekend for me just to witness the same guys that told me to learn to adapt cry a river over something they could easily have “adapted” to by getting off their bucket.. I’ll never forget it.

The bottom line is that if a few guys can’t see a target...that’s their problem. If the hunter class can’t see a target from their bucket, it should be immediately fixed. 😂

Mike ...

I hear what your saying and while I'm NOT going to make the distinction of what class shooter could be making any such protesting, bitching etc ... IS BECAUSE we have accepted the format of NOT HAVING TO ADAPT.

As a bucket shooter and having the sentiments I do on this subject, those who know me and seen me at some matches where this clear access difficulty is a known, I CARRY 2 heights of shooting sticks, a Tri stool and a bumm bag !! Sometimes sitting in the dirt shooting off my knee !! in hunter class no less.

Thats my point and as a MD myself for the SVFTC and having run the Cal State in 2019 that stark reality that many of the shooter are Older, Over weight or having physical limitations preventing them from OPERATING OUTSIDE THERE COMFORT ZONE. Adapting for many is not happening !!

As too the TARGET Replace / Re-shoot ? much as i hate the idea of Re-Shoot on a Replaced target, to be universally fair in such an instance EVERYONE gets to readdress it.

To say only those who protested it would have every damn target protested !! I mien really how often do we hear I GOT IT !! SAW THE PADDLE WOBBLE !! SAW THE PELLET BOUNCE BACK OUT THE KZ etc etc etc ....

It would be far more fair and realistic to do what we have also done .... PULL THE TARGET and No shooters get points for that said target. Far better than allowing those who gripe and protest the most finding advantage in that conduct.

Just thoughts.

In an ideal world, only the shooter that called the malfunction gets to reshoot that replaced target. I like to run our big matches that way. But I have had it snowball at least for one match. And I read of a similar fiasco at the 2018 WFTF world match, where even though the targets worked mostly fine, there were numerous frivolous target calls that caused unreasonable delays. Partly because there were many targets set in inaccessible areas. Match Directors should set the course so targets are accessible, and be prepared to change them out quickly.

Calling a target once in awhile is OK. We will see how that works out for those who have a hard time accepting that they miss. Unfortunately, if maximum possible score is more important than sportsmanship, than the logical thing to do is protest every target that you miss. That way, IF a target happens to fail the test (they sometimes do), you get to reshoot it. Knowing human nature, they might need to put in some disincentive for frivolous/false protests.

Another alternative that I like would be - no called targets. If it falls you get a point, if it doesn't, tough luck.

Motörhead....you are the only MD that happily came out and fixed a target that was clearly too low to be legal without disparaging remarks for the guys pointing it out. You even apologized for it being so. The usual treatment is a public shaming with the “nobody else had a problem with it” remark. I’ll always remember that too.

That's the main reason why I switched back to Hunter Division. I still sit on the ground most of the time, but I carry a folding seat for targets that I can't see from that position. No complaining, no shaming.

Thank you for the acknowledgement Mike.

Ive shot a few matches that had this^^^ exact thing(s) happen. But should mention the previous, or next shot dropped the target. The time or two didint happen, the target was pulled.

End of the day, I pulled the trigger and the target didnt fall. 99.97% of the time, its me, and not the target......
