Adjusting the Hatsan Gas Piston

If you have the right type of vortex ram(hatsan has 5 types) the ram itself has a fill port like any hatsan PCP,you just stick thier hatsan branded fill probe in and fill to no more than 150 bar,they come set at 120 and say that is the best pressure but I took apart my hatsan edge and seen I have the type 2 vortex ram and got out my hand pump and started filling,what shocked me is I have the edge in .25,it's a 20 ft lbs gun,the stock pressure on my vortex ram was less than 100 bar! I quickly got it up to 150 bar(15 pump strokes) put the gun back together with buttoned, piston vortek piston seal moly tune,sand polished,ect and the gun went from ≤20FT lbs to 23-24 FT lbs and isn't all that harder to cock,and not that harsh firing cycle.

The thing is they have different types of vortex ram and not all of them have a fill port,some have a flat head screw in the port and also has the spring tube end cap attached to it,those ones I'm unaware of how to fill them you have to look inside the gun at the rear of the ram if it has a hole in it that will fit a fill probe then you can tune it

I stopped at 150 as noted on Benjamin hand pump,the 150 gave me 3 ft lb more than the stock 20 ,23ft lbs max now and 50 lbs of cocking effort up from 35 lbs. I also honed, vortek piston seal, button the Piston, smooth edges,ect that alone could have gave me the power boost? It says right on the RAM that max velocity is at 120 bar, but tells you to fill to no more than 150. It is probably fail safe for higher pressure,but I wouldn't risk it, maybe in 5 bar increments to test but I'm not willing to try it.

What model and build year is yours, maybe you have the older generation air piston that could have less factory fte than the newest generation ?


Because my 155 vortex version states 31 fte from factory.

I purchased mine about 2 weeks ago so it is probably the newest generation version.

I have not shoot with it yet and I don’t have a chrono meter yet.

I believe only the gas spring in the 85,87,125,135,155 along with edge series have adjustable gas piston,my friend has a 95 and 100x that I've helped tuned for him and those had sealed Rams that I couldn't figure out,the end cap had been attached to the ram with a screw in the fill port? But I've stripped down a 125 that had an adjustable RAM and the 125,135,155 all use the same gas piston.

I have a Hatsan 125 TH Vortex .22 which is factory-set at 13 ft lbs ... yes, you have read correctly - 13 ?!

I have a chronograph and I have shot the rifle with a dozen pellets of JSB and H&N and the power is 17-18 J / 12.5-13.3 ft. Lbs.

The rifle and chronograph are completely upright! Even after we measured the pellet speeds, I replaced the cuff and the o-ring of the barrel, polished the cylinder and other things but the results were the same.

The gas spring can be pumped but according to my colleagues - if ever (?!), The gas spring often releases pressure only in a few days ...

Can anyone recommend a gas spring from another brand or some other option?

On the Internet I found several types of gas springs - Russian mainly pumped at 170, 185, 200 and 220 bar, but I think that from a rifle-safe point of view the most suitable will be 170 bar. Any ideas about this?

-- limet92 -- i would go with .22 or .25 ... i've had a few of these....even back to when they were more crude - like the first imports , the walther talon mag and falcon mag. it's erroneous reasoning to expect that you'd basically have the same thing if you just used a heavier .177 pellet - i was once a die hard .177 person , and i tried the same thing there.... that is just personal, hand on experience....even after the quattro trigger became available on the talon magnum (hatsan 125) , i found that installing a benjamin trail xl gas ram into them was much better , not as fast , but much more accurate and easier to shoot. it's been like that for me with the uk webley patriot , the gamo hunter extreme (the gamo hurricane 1250) , and all of the turkish-made magnums - even the .177 webley domin8r i had (early version of the hattie 155) - it's just toooo much force being squeezed behind a tiny 4.5 mm hole..... they all beat the living poop out of me ( recoil ). in .22 , the last 125's i had out of the box (or walther falcon hunters) would chrono 965 fps with crosman premiers. 30-32 ftlbs. that's crazy power - even from a pcp. .....if you're dead set on .177 and crave a magnum , the .177 diana 350 i had was pretty cool - especially with croman premier heavies (10.5 gr).... i tried the heavy eun jin pellets and broke the mainspring (too much force behind a tiny 4.5 mm hole). it was like blowing up a balloon thru a tiny little stir straw. those model 125 snipers are nice , tho. my favorite hatsan nowdays is the .22 model 85 sniper . they shoot about 770 with crosman premiers and are very easy to handle. hatsan makes very good springs. i had heard that macarri really couldnt much improve upon them , but you can later have one his piston seals installed for more consistent velocities , which will make it more accurate out past 40 yards - and a .22 hatsan 125 or any of it's variants has a crazy range for .22. good groups at 55 yards were common from mine when using the field target specials (copper coated field target trophy pellets). http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251485/6616786.htm

-- hatsan hpa rams -- i recently bought a refurbed .25 hatsan model 85 vortex sniper from field supply for $120. i did as much checking to insure that velocities were somewhere closer to advertised 700 fps , rather than the 620-646 fps i have seen from many other medium power (non-magnum, under 8lbs) spring / piston break barrels. i wanted it to be like a .25 diana model 48 (670-680 fps) , but lighter weight to carry around. i magically thought the vortex piston was something special and hatsan usually doesnt inflate chrono ratings on their airguns. -- all velocities here are using the 20 grain hatsan pellets , which are rebadged h&n field target trophy pellets - same as .25 diana rastatt pellets -- ...well , when i got the gun and pellets , the gun had no pressure in the hpa ram. after trying to email them in arkansas and getting generic answers (the office girl) , i contacted the hatsan guy i met at the airgun show that sent me some breech seals and piston seals for free (maybe daniel settle , but not sure). they were having a shortage of rams and i was installing the benjamin np2 rams into this type hatsan medium size rifles , but he found a new one and shipped it to me...although he mentioned it'd be better to send the rifle back to them.......it's because they have some many different combinations of internals - as mentioned above about 5 different struts. they probably have even more variations of spring / top hat / spacer installations than hpa rams. i had to (gently , because heat from grinding can make these blow - so dont do it) grind off about 1/8" to make mine fit. i rushed out to chronograph it....lame 618 fps.......lame-o . i called the hatsan rep on the phone this time and he explained that the lubricants inside cannot properly seal the from end around the stainless piston rod if the guns have been stored for long periods in warehouses with muzzles poiting upward - like most folks would. but it made sense. --- then i read all about other guys topping their struts off with the fill probes and getting good results. that just wasnt the case with mine. i was very careful to not overfill at first - i went to 1800 psi. it was probably at 1600 as new. no velocity increase. i jacked to 2000 psi - still not over 630 fps and very hard to cock and harsh firing cycle...blah... i was very careful to bleed the extra pressure i had put in , so not to loose the clear lubricant inside during the the bleeding process - but even then i lost more oil than i wanted. in the end , i put the pressure back to 1700 psi (120 bar) and the gun purred like a kitten , shooting the copper-coated spitzkugel (24 grain h&n economy pellets) at a very consistent 615-618 fps and clover leafing at 20 yards. (for some reason that gun hated ftt pellets.) ....oh yeah , while i was waiting on the replacement hpa strut or ram (it's not a gas ram) , i tried the extra springs i had from the 5mm webley value max rifles , and the np2 ga rams.....never better than 630 fps....and hard to cock.... idk , man , maybe i got a bad one.... i used to get 3 rifles in a case from webley (hatsan-made) and when i would test fire upon receipt over the chrony , each one would act differently ..... some shot so good that i dreaded ever taking them apart - others , well , we all know the webley story.....and it sucks as bad no more sheridans ! ... here it is - i sold to a friend of mine like this for $200 - he didnt have any .25's.... i keep asking him about it , but he works so much that i guess he doesnt get to shoot much - but he's always buying airguns.....i can understand that 😋 .. ::
