Advise on asking questions about anything

Think! What I mean is this: think before asking, and make it easier for people to give you a better answer by "thinking" about what you really want to know.
What air gun, what scope, what power, what, what, and what. Not a good way to ask something.
The More information someone gives, the better response or answer you will get.
If you do not know anything, you may be better off doing some homework on your own to better grasp the subject you're asking about.
Being lazy is like not aiming; how the heck are you going to hit your target if you do not take aim? Your target is to get the best information you can about what you want to know, right?
When you ask a question,
Ask for advice,
Ask for a suggestion…
Respond to the people who went out of their way to answer you.
Not responding is a clear definition of poor upbringing and is rude!🤬

Agree, always feels strange helping someone out of a jam only to be ghosted. I chalk it up to embarrassment or fear of ridicule, either way, nothing wrong with polite acknowledgement. WM

I've found it helps me to ask a "general specific" question first. Don't laugh, for example.

Say, "I'm having a problem with my Weihrauch springer. Who should I ask?"

The general (springer) the specific (Weihrauch.)

Hopefully one of the 'experts' will follow up.
Excuse my off topic comment, Ive been thinking about you with these severe weather outbreaks Lt.Dan. it has been rockn and rollin, in your area. 👍

LOL... I've seen threads go for days in so many different directions and last for pages. Sometimes even turn into feelings getting hurt.. only to notice that the original poster was a one and done and hasn't even logged back on since day one.. SMH

If I walked into a room and said that:
My .22/500mm Crown was shooting .375 CTC groups (5@50M), ES=7, SD3.2, @ 33 fpe with 18.13 JSBs

Cheers!
That kind of info is generaly posted in group conversations, not newbie questions and likley accompanied with photos, or continuing a previous conversation.
That reminds me of the fake mechanic making up all these names for the gizmos that are broke in a car, skit. Lol.

Yes indeed.
I thought I put some good info out, and was anxious to hear their results, but, they never came back?

True, but newbies will often lurk around discussions trying to understand what's going on.

I know that I do. 😉

Good point.

Some folk are trying to respectfully qualify 10 quality posts. Every so often this topic comes up as waves of new members abound. This cycle has been and is going to continue.
The new people are the future of this forum and to the hobby/sport that we all enjoy.

The answer is to buy the latest FX Impact, always has been.

Kidding aside, the options seem limitless these days, so like previously mentioned the devil is in the details.

If you are one that asks a vague question, I’d say lean on the gents that give detailed responses.

There are often no wrongs answers, but options to help you in the direction you’d like to go. Or discovered the direction you want to go.

That is likely one of the greater beefs in my book as well .... Give a technical & context rich anwser and then crickets from the OP who was asking for help.
Good thing for Thick Skin and knowing you tried to help.

Or ask a vaguely worded question to elicit the maximum number of replies. Be surprised how much you can learn if you give people the opportunity to tell you all about their hobby horse. Or in this case gun, scope, tank, valve etc.

THANKS for posting that! Love it when people ask questions like "what's the best airgun for me?" Period! No details, no preferences, etc. What ARE these people thinking (or NOT thinking). I really want to help people out here but the ineptitude or downright laziness of others is becoming a pet peeve. I'll work on MY part of that but would like to see the posters of those types of things work on their part too! Maybe I'm old & crotchety, I'll try to repair my "crotchet" 🤪

I hear you, Gerry. There’s some that need or want help, then there are others that want you to hold their hand the entire step of the way. I know they are smart enough to figure it out on their own, they are just being lazy. I’m far from being a lazy person so I don’t have the patience for laziness.

The other thing folks need to think about on forum assistance and advice given, we don’t get to see the “deer in the headlights look” like we would if explaining to someone in person. I recently gave very detailed and thorough instructions to someone face to face on how to frame out for a new add on window. The whole time “splainin’” step by step I got the uh huh uh huh and nodding off the head like he was understanding every detail I gave him. But I knew better as I could see it in his face with mouth wide open that he wasn’t getting it. Two days later he’s asking again for me to start over “because there was too much background noise when I explained it the first time”.
Yeahhhhhh…..

So this is what we don’t see, when advising on a forum.

Anymore what I do when I assist someone, I give them tasks to do as part of the instructional advice I give, so if they call on me again I first ask them if they did what I told them to do first. The goal was to get you to learn by making mistakes, and also to feel good about yourself as you were able to figure things out.

Dedicating tasks will tell me if the person is a true go getter wanting to learn, or if they just want me to hold their hand the entire time.

Here’s an example- a famous airgun smith recently gave me sound advice on specialty work towards improving a part. I new iy would require tools. He told me about certain parts I needed.

So, I could’ve just taken advantage of his generosity by asking for a pic of these parts, then hey where do you get them, and after he tells me on amazon, I just push it even more and ask him on his time, to go thru his purchase history and link it to me. True laziness on my part, and if that airgun smith stopped maintaining contact with me I wouldn’t blame him one bit. He already gave me precious information, it was now up to me to do my part

Yes we've had an exciting last few weeks, weather wise. Last week it was 80° and sunny then storms and flooding. This week rain followed by lows in the 20s.
