AEA HP varmint upgradabilty?

I added 2 shims to the reg. The little plenum adapter only has one small offset hole so I drilled 2 or 3 more.

Just bought one of those today for another gun, that would be interesting on the Varmint.
It really didn’t do much for tightening up the groups because after finding the sweet spot for filling (32-3300)psi on mine it was very accurate down to 2200psi or so but within the 4500psi fill the shot count went way up. I also have 2 mavericks. At 50 yds the only difference in accuracy comes from the trigger pull. If I shoot a couple mags through my aea i am just as good with it as my mav’s. But when I haven’t shot the the aea in a while it takes a little bit to get used to the trigger again.

Polishing the trigger/sear contact surfaces I use a die grinder with 2" felt pads. Use a metal polish, I've used Mothers, Brasso, and Flitz. I like Flitz best. Polish to a mirror finish the hammer catch on the sear and the mating surfaces rear of hammer and front of sear. I did this yesterday to my Terminator and went from 4 lb down to 3.

Just wondering, how is the accuracy with your DIY swage slugs? I saw in another thread that you have a Corbin swage set.

The varmint and my maverick are both sub moa at 50yds with almost any slugs. I shoot .217’s any where from 19.5-28.5 grains. The varmint doesn’t really care for a 2s nose though. Still moa but barely. The few times I have had time to go shoot where I can get 100+ yards the wind has been horrible! I will say this though-my Varmints favorite food is the Patriot .217 23gr. They are at least a 4s nose. I have never missed a chipmunk with it. Even at 80yds when all you can see is its head sticking up. I really need to get a scope cam but keep spending my money on other crap!

My 25cal Varmint is really proving to be the value gun that I'd hoped. It stacks 25.4gr JSB pellets and 36gr H&N slugs on top of each other at 35yds.
My only wish was that it either liked lightweight slugs a bit more, or that it had about 50fps more to give with the heavy slugs that it likes. It moves 26gr FX Hybrid slugs at 1020fps and 26.8gr Nielsens at 1010. The FX don't group at all, and the Nielsens group about an inch at 35yds. I'll stick with the H&N 36s because I can shoot inside out on a 3/4" dot at that range. But they're only moving at about 880-890. It would be great if I could get them up to about 950 or so for a good flat trajectory for small game hunting.
I had the gun apart over the last week to do a Duracoat camo job, and that included taking off the barrel. While I was in there I expanded the barrel transfer ports from 3/32 up to 7/64. The barrel uses 6 of them, so combined that's a good amount extra. I'll report back on power gains or accuracy losses and whether or not I ruined my rifle. Until then, here it is in the new 2023 colors.

EDIT: Also added a .58L CF bottle during the teardown. I like the lighter weight and slightly increased capacity.

Fantastic job on the paint!!

I’m curious of any changes from the port mods. I feel like accuracy shouldn’t be effected unless you just left some nasty burrs.

Dave
I really tried to get in there with a fine file and get rid of all the burrs, so we'll see. I used a pull-through patch to confirm and was finished when I got rid of anything that left behind any lint. Fingers crossed!

I just got back from the range- first test of my Varmint since opening the transfer port.

VERDICT: Don't bother. I opened the ports up one drill size above the factory ones. There are 6 that circle the breech, so the effect should have been pronounced as a cumulative addition of all the added port area. The end result seems to be that I bought myself about 10fps at max power. My 36gr H&N slugs are now moving at 900-910, up from about 890. Didn't seem to take any hit in accuracy, but drilling into the barrel wasn't worth the risk for such a small bump in power. I'm happy I didn't mess up the accuracy and it still shoots like a laser beam, but I wouldn't do it if I'd thought I'd only get a tiny bump in speed like that.

Looks like your painting with a broad brush, mine feeds fine and I just pulled the hammer spring last weekend and mine has no wear in the pin pocket.

5k pellets through this gun and rolling strong.
Hello Firewaller, sounds like you got a very well adjusted one. That great!
I have again returned my AEA Carbine back to Semiauto. On this iteration, I adjusted the reg pressure to about 2800 psi also threaded the cocking rod into the barrel shroud cocking piston about an additional 10mm. My thinking is with additional air volume in front of the piston will reduce the snappy cocking action to function without operating so quickly that the bolt would hit the rear buffer and then slam back into the forward buffer which sometimes bounces hard enough to cause a jam or double feed a pellet which both have happened straight out of the box.
So far setup like this, the Semiauto operation is functioning well. 😃 shot around 15 or so mags No Issues thus far!
It’s still just plinking accurate, but runs smoothly!
Thanks sir,

It looks like I may have compromised my breech o-ring a bit when I filed the burrs from drilling. There's some oil in my mag, leading me to think it's from blow-by from that o-ring.
Before I blindly order an o-ring kit and hope for the best, has anyone replaced the breech o-ring on one of the .25cal AEA HP models? I was planning on doing a little maintenance this weekend so I haven't pulled it out yet. Is it a weird size? Any heads-up would be appreciated.

EDIT: Never mind. I took it out and it's 7mm x 2mm with an OD of 11mm. Looks like a pretty common size, I ordered a ]set of metric o-rings and I should be set for life.

Just got an HP Carbine in .25 and was planning to follow Sicumj's lead on polishing the barrel crown. Once I got a close look at it I'm thinking it needs a lot more than just polish. Would anyone recommend cutting it back to get a clean break on the rifling?View attachment 302337

Looks like a good sized burr on the upper left. I would return the gun.
