N/A AGT Uragan 2, Vulcan 3, Taipan Vet 1 and 2, AirMaks Katran etc (Did my research but need help)

Hi everyone and happy holidays and happy new year!

Need help picking a .22 PCP from the vast sea of options.

I already have a .30 FX Wildcat MK3 I purchased in March of 2024 and it has done great by me for its intended purpose (racoon, fox and squirrel hunting). However, shooting a .30 for smaller pests and general plinking is not viable (cost wise and power wise its too much).

I read some reviews and general user experience input here on AGN about the AGT Uragan 2, V3, Taipan Vet 1 and 2, Katran offerings and here is what I saw as pros and cons:

1) Uragan 2, well built, accurate, can shoot pellets and slugs but due to the regulator not easily adjustable without a tool to measure it seems to be a no go for me because I do not want to tinker. (Unless it can be set-up right from some of the sellers , i.e Tony from Talon Tunes, Derick Wall, etc)
2) Vulcan 3, similar to Uragan 2 in terms of power and built quality but perhaps the decision comes down to which one I prefer based on design and ergonomics. For those who have experienced both, please provide pros and cons.
3) Taipan Vet 1 or 2, great built quality, heavy gun, easy to adjust due to external hammer adjustment, can shoot slugs and pellets. Seems like a great choice. Not sure where to buy from because I want it set-up to shoot either slugs or pellets that give it best accuracy out to 80 yards.
4) AirMaks Katran, there seems to be many offering. Some are long rifles other are small bullpup style. Do not know much about them but from some reviews I read they are excellent quality rifles. Could use some input on if these will serve my purpose of plinking and small pest control (can they shoot both slugs and pellets well?) Are they easy to adjust/tune?

So having said that, I prefer small rifles and will mostly be shooting from inside my room (my set-up allows me to shoot from my room to the backyard where by targets will be set-up.

Important to me: .22 cal, if it can be configured to shoot slugs with the same or better accuracy as pellets out to 70-80 yards (max range) I am game. If pellets will do the job in .22 out to this range for plinking and be able to take squirrels then I am okay with skipping on slugs. Easy to work on if needed, I do not want to have to tinker with tunes if it can be set-up right from the seller. Excellent trigger, low noise/bark (my FX .30 is loud on full power 80 ft lbs even with a moderator).

Thanks for your guidance because I am a little lost because of all the options out there.

I haven't had the U2 but I can talk about the V3 and Taipan II tac and Long.. All three are great airguns. All three need to be taken down to adjust the regulators. All 3 are more accurate than this shooter. The Taipan do edge the V3 in build quality but that doesn't mean the AGT's are built poorly.. Just that the Taipans are above about anything I've owned so far in build quality and trigger/cocking smoothness. If I had to choose just one it would be the Taipan one or two just because the trigger and cocking are unbelievable.

If you want the most out of any gun, you have to make a decision. Pellets or slugs. Then go all in with finalizing a tune. You’ll be hard pressed to have a slugger that will do what a great pellet shooter will do out to 80 yards on a day to day, week to week and month to month basis. It’s not impossible, but it would help if you do like to tinker. When you are able to sit back and look at the big picture, certain things become obvious. Slug shooters, even if they claim they have it or their gun figured out, are always chasing a better slug. Pellet shooters, not so much. Once in a while when a new pellet is introduced, it’s a little flurry of testing then guys either commit or not. A great .22 airgun is almost a necessity in your situation so good luck. You’re on the right track. I have four pellet shooters and two slug shooters in .22. I don’t have any that I try to do both with. It doesn’t work because I’m too picky.

I will also add that for general plinking and having fun I never grab my sluggers. They are for hunting and testing. That’s the fun part of them. The fun plinking guns/hunting guns are pellet shooters.

@MACTEN thanks. I am leaning more to the Taipan as well.

@Vetmx you make great points. I do not expect the gun to do both at the same tune (slugs and pellets). I also believe a good pellet shooter will be the best for my needs (cost wise for plinking and light pesting). I have my .30 Wildcat for the longer range needs and heavy pest control. The .22 I am looking for should be super accurate, this will solve the itch for plinking and the squirrel issues I have to take care of as well. I do not want to tinker with the gun, I have the FX for that. I want a gun that is tuned for a certain pellet and want it to be a set it and forget it thing. I do not want a gun that has shifting POI and I believe the Taipan is one of those guns that holds it POI without a fuss.

Tony @ Talon Tunes has both Vet 1 and 2, I am guessing Vet 2 being newer would be a good option or should I go for Vet 1 and why?

I will give you my thoughts - as a .22 Veteran 2 Standard (550mm) owner…

The Vet 1s and Vet 2s use the same barrels and triggers (and barrel & trigger is excellent)

Vet 1s have rear cocking with an anti double load feature.
Vet 2s have side cocking but do not have anti double load.

The decision on where you prefer the cocking lever and whether you must have the anti double load is likely the most significant driver in determining which version you go with.

Prefer .25, or .30, but do have one .22 PCP, an Vet 1 Standard. Recommended by Vetmx few years back, best trigger and most consistently accurate of my collection. So boringly accurate with JSB 18.13s, don't shoot much. Perfect for small invasive/pest birds. My U2 and V3 are .30 but balanced valve platform of U2 is more user friendly, though, not sure if that translates to .22. WM

In your situation I would be pondering a few things also. The Vet 1 and others like older RTI’s that came with pellet only CZ’s are just stupid accurate with pellets. To the point that that barrel will shoot pellets with bent skirts. Now here comes the newer gen of guns that are trying to do both pellets and slugs. There will be a compromise, there has to be. Will the light choke or no choke gun be more pellet picky? Maybe. It could shoot an 18.1 fantastic. But you might not be able to feed it pebbles and wood pellets like us Vet 1 owners.

Try to get some feedback from Vet 2 owners about pellets. If it’s possible seeing as how everyone is chasing the slug dragon if their gun is advertised with a glimmer of hope. I have three Uragan 2’s. Labeled pellet and slug guns. But I never fired pellets out of two of them. The U2 compact in .22 I did. It shot 2 of the 3 I tried fantastic. I would feel safe to gamble the Vet 2 is the same.

Thank you, this is extremely helpful. I don’t have a need for anti double load and have preference for side cocking.

Good point about the older and newer versions and preference for pellets vs slugs. Definitely something to ponder

I own a compact Vet 1 in .25. It shoots great and is MOA. Only down side is its heavy and honestly, not fun to walk around with. It mostly resides in a fully supported tripod. My next gun is going to be an Airmaks Krait in .22. I should be able to subtract at least 1 pound and keep the energy at 40 some foot pounds.

This one sounds perfect:

Question, which 25gr .218 slugs are being used to get the velocity and accuracy stated in the classified?

So i ended up buying this beauty! At least in my eyes it looks good.

Any recommendations for scope and rings? Prefer a 24x scope that is light weight too. FFP or SFP doesn’t matter because I shoot at fixed magnification.

Can I get away with a 50mm objective scope and low mounts?
