Air compressor

Good luck with those really cheap ones. Every video or post i see has guys spending more money on extra parts to make it work better or run cooler. Or they are always breaking down. I got the air venturi compressor and so far it has worked great but every time i start it i worry a little knowing it is a new technology (price wise). But now i would be lost with out it and would probably sell my pcp's if it died. Im not going back to pumping!!

I didn’t waste time on the cheap ones and went right to the AirVenturi compressor and so far it’s be just fine,I have mine in my living room on a wood floor so it’s a bit loud due to the vibration but I can still watch tv while it’s running,if it was on a carpeted floor it would be even more quite.the Omega is supposed to be a nice compressor also and I think there is one more for under 1500.00, if you look back in the compressor threads I believe there are some comparisons between a few of them...

Even though I tend to be mechanically inclined, I don’t really have the time. Because the idea of shipping a big compressor for repairs doesn’t appeal to me, I have chosen to stay using the Altaros booster. User serviceable in a few minutes. And if my shop compressor goes, then it’s easy to replace and piece together. Good luck in your search.

How about a Booster instead? Esp. if you already have a shop compressor ( you should anyway right?) .
The shoebox has been on sale recently for right at $500.00 for the more basic but 4,500psi model and I use the Altros booster, works flawlessly and even with your stated mechanical skills you can rebuild it if ever needed, honest.

I bought an av booster. It filled one bottle and died so i sent it back and got the av compressor. Bought from pyramyd air as a refurbished unit for $1099.00. The frame is a little bent but other then that it was brand new and its awesome! A week after i bought it the only sorts store in town offering hpa fills closed down. They didn't like filling my big tanks anyway

Same experience I had. Only I really like the booster route, so I got an Altaros instead.

The Omega does have a moisture trap. The higher priced models have an automatic bleed, but mine does not. I accomplished that in a different way.

I should post a photo.... The Omega pulls air from the outside though a vent in the crankcase. The thread is a standard 3/4 inch female pipe. I built an external dryer out of a plastic container, some PVC fittings, and some silica gel. In 20 hours or so total use, I've dried out the silica gel one time. I know it works, and very little moisture escapes when the trap is drained.

Some suppliers all but insist you need a high-pressure drier. I can't speak for everyones experience, but my own. When I was using an external HP dryer, the pressure shutoff in the Shoebox always shut the unit down too soon—typically 500 PSI—no matter how you went about adjusting it. Part of the issue was the design of the dryer, and its built-in pressure "switch".

And I must say, I agree with Mr. 22—buy a couple of rebuild kits, and keep them on hand. A couple of extra packing nuts are in order too. And I suggest slotting the cover screw holes, as the unit requires maintenance EVERY time you use it.

"jland48"Does anyone have experience with the Alpha Carrette that Joe Broncato sells? It sounds like a better route than the AV..
Good thread on forum members experience with the Alpha-Carette. I bought the unit from azccj mentioned in the thread and am extremely happy with the performance thus far. It does not come standard with an output air dryer/filter so I made one using the info supplied in the second link below. A search in the Air Tanks, Pumps and Compressors Forum will provide a lot more info.

And of course probably the most extensive test/torture vetting done on any compressor that I have ever seen was done here:

ALAN are you saying the omega air compressor needs to be worked on or rebuild after every time you use it?
if so that's a lot of money for a compressor that needs work on it to be used every single time for each fill.
? I didn't think the omega was so crappy.

I don't know cuz I don't own one... can any one chime in if they own one or know about them thanks guys

I had one of the early units with the auto drain and shut-off. Would highly recommend it. Never had any problem with the unit except for a small check valve and spring that needed changed. It comes with a couple of spares and takes all of one min to change out. At about 125 hours it started to slow down and was going to need the supplied rebuild kit installed in the head. Other then do it myself, called Todd at AOA and he had me unbolt just the head and ship it to him. He rebuilt it to brand new specs and sent it back in about a week. Cost about 100 bucks. Quick and painless for two years of service. The thing that made it for me is the great service Todd offers. You just don't have to worry should a problem come up. Later traded it back to them for a new Daystate compressor. After figuring out the costs of owning it, it provided damned cheap unlimited air for two years. My personal feelings on air compressors is to only buy from a dealer that will stand behind you for service and buy the best compressor for your usage. Yes, they are expensive, but they are an investment like a new gun. When the time comes it can be sold for most of what it costs so you loose vary little. As I see it the most expensive air comes from buying a unsupported compressor, having problems and then having no resale value. Then your just out. Good luck. sylvan
