"spysir"How about a Booster instead? Esp. if you already have a shop compressor ( you should anyway right?) . 
The shoebox has been on sale recently for right at $500.00 for the more basic but 4,500psi model and I use the Altros booster, works flawlessly and even with your stated mechanical skills you can rebuild it if ever needed, honest.

I agree with Spysir and Intenseaty 22. I think the Shoebox F10 is on sale right now for $499. They have 6 or 7 left. Wouldn't buy anything else. I can't imagine putting something that required running water, antifreeze or engine oil inside my home. Wouldn't want the messy maintenance either. Guess It's all fun and games until you have a coolant leak or an oil spill. Getting good service would be a pain too. Most people don't think about that. I recommend the ShoeBox F10 or Altros booster. They are clean user serviceable home or apartment friendly compressors.
