Air pistol silhouette - Which pistol scope, red dot or reflex sight?

Just got a Hammerli AP20 Pro 10m pistol. I am planning on using it for pistol silhouette. I bought a clamp on barrel mounted Weaver rail for it. What do you guys use for your silhouette pistol. I do not use the "taco" hold. I do not want a rifle scope on my pistol.

I do have a rifle scope (UTG 3-12) that I have on mine at the moment. I tried a 3-7 Pistol scope with long eye relief, but I didn't like it. The next time I go somewhere to shoot, I'll bring it, at you are more than welcome to try it.

If you're allergic to using a rifle scope on your silhouette pistol a non-magnifying red-dot scope/sight is a better choice than a LER scope. A LER scope sucks for offhand pistol shooting; especially for more than a shot or two. Trust me; I wrote the book on the subject... actually, several.

Note, if you (anyone) goes with a red dot sight, look into the Holosun red dots. I now have a few, both on my powder fire guns and also my air fired guns.

One thing that makes them top picks, is they have the normal dot, but also have a ring around the dot. This ring goes a LONG way toward fast target acquisition. A couple other brands also have the ring, but overall, I've been happier with the Holosun brand. Tuff too, they can withstand dropping without changing the point of aim, even to having cracked lens glass, they still work. See You-Tube video tests.

I too was allergic to using a rifle scope on my pistol. That was until I received regular awesome coaching from a seasoned pistol veteran. Now I love using a rifle scoped pistol over all distances. It took me some time to start to become proficient with a scope, and I still have much to learn, but for me it was definitely well worth the effort, frustration and fellow shooter jokes about my accuracy that I endured along my journey of learning.

I like red dots! I have several Burris fastfires 8 MOA, a UltraDot matchDot 2,4,6,8 MOA and a inexpensive bushel trs-25 2 MOA I like the Burris best. on air pistols because they are light, and I like the big dot out to 25 yards. I can even shoot a better score on a ten meter target with the 8moa vs 2 Moa. I would like to try a reflex sight with a 6 MOA but hate to try something new. I bought a 1720T and need a sight for it but haven't bought one yet. Back in the Contender days I had every pistol scope made. So I know the red dots are for me..

I consider red-dot sights/scopes the best choice for most offhand pistol shooting unless/until the pistolero learns to use a rifle scope (that, assuming a pistol not overwhelmed by a rifle scope).

BTW, congratulations Ricardo on your recent air-pistol competition success with that 3-9X RIFLE scope on your Brocock pistol. You've come a long way in a short time, Buddy! 

Though half a globe away, I helped Richardo not only learn to use a rifle scope on a pistol for silhouette and field-target competitions, but also managed to help him find the correct, 'silver-slipper' rifle scope for his particular air pistol. Rich just DOMINATED his local club airgun competition with his rifle-scoped pistol rig! How 'bout posting a photo of your rig, Rich?

Thanks for your kind words, Ron. But all the credit must go to you my friend. For the readers, Ron and I struck up an online friendship and as they say - the rest is history. For Gonzav71, it takes a good deal of time and practice to learn to shoot well with an AO rifle scoped air pistol. Red dots definitely have their place, however for me I no longer consider them an option irrespective of the distance I shoot over.

Ok. For the moment, I will start with a CenterPoint Optics 32mmm Open Reflex sight. 10 yard zero. 12.5 yards hold under 0.25". 15-18 yards hold 0.4" under. With a red dot, I aim dead on for all distances.

I will try out a 3x LER pistol scope in the near future.

I too would be interested in one of the barrel mounts for the Hammerli. Is it something you make and sell, or did you buy it somewhere?

That mount sure looks like the Sun Optics IZH 46 barrel mount. I’ve also seen these used on the Daisy 7x7 series pistols. Now whether you can find one in stock anywhere might be the next question.

I really like red dot scopes, and my very favorite one isn’t made anymore. It’s the little one in the picture, a Millett red dot and the #2 dot is very small which I like. Plus you can set it on the dimmest setting using the smallest dot and it’s a very fine sight, you can “aim small” with it because you can always see the bull right through the dim tiny red dot. The other one is a Ultra dot and it’s really good too, I got it from gwelo123! Thanks Nick it’s on my HW44 .22 and is a great choice for a red dot in my opinion. I sure wish they still made the tiny Millett though, so light it was almost unnoticeable on a pistol.
