air rifle energy: joule vs fpe

Hello

I live in the US (Michigan) but I'm a french citizen

The French law in terms of air rifle says if more than 20 Joules, the owner needs to have a valid hunting license or be a licensed shooter (from a federal shooting club)

But it seems the energy of an air rifle depends on the pellets used

If I were to go back to France, how do I prove a specific gun is under 20 Joules (which is apparently ~15 FPE)

Ex: Gauntlet for PCP, or HW97k or TX200 for springers (I do not own any of these guns................yet)

I have not lived it so just a guess/thought.

Generally they already have a list, either air guns that are ( generally ) okay, or a list of those that are not.

Not on this list, oh boy. Time & effort may be needed.



Your rifle WILL be tested with the ammo giving it the HIGHEST numbers - fpe/fps which ever said country cares about most-.

Just be certain your rig can not exceed the limit with ANY pellet.

And certainly obtain some ideas here then contact whatever agency would be in charge of the legal stuff where you plan on going as that is the only way tio get real and current information that can keep you out of Jail.



If you find concrete testing regs for your country please do share.

Jeez..................I just took a quick look on internet about the cost of the hunting license in France: $265 per year !!!!

In the US, I have to have a hunting license to own firearms (22lr for example) - it costs me $11 a year for small game (and I don't even hunt)

Don't get me wrong, I like my country. But when it comes to fishing, hunting, boating, etc................looks like they do everything they can to make it difficult and expensive !!!

I don't understand! As a US citizen you do not need a hunting license to buy or own firearms. 

Is this a requirement for those who are not?

As far as the 20J rule, I think hawkeye is right.

I'm not a US citizen.....I live and work in the US under a work Visa

So yes, I need a hunting license to legally buy and own firearms. I would say no big deal

When I was looking to buy my first one, I've heard everything: yes you can with your driver's license, no you can't without a green card or no you can't at all

So I ended up bringing the form to the store and showing them that I could as long as I had a hunting license.....

You don't need to be a US citizen, even to buy powder burners in most states. Just pass a back ground check.

Depends on your immigration status. You must also fill out a firearms transaction record Form 4473. On that form, an alien admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa is not prohibited from purchasing, receiving or possessing a firearm if the alien is: (1) In possession of a hunting license or permit lawfully issued by the Federal Government...
